Many of the deepest and most important areas of mathematics have arisen from questions about extremes - shortest lines, smallest areas, densest packings, fewest colours. Mathematicians have been grappling with such issues for centuries, and some go back thousands of years. The isoperimetric problem, for example - which asks for the shortest path enclosing a given area - dates back to the mythological founding of the city of Carthage. By contrast, it was only in 2017 that the densest ways to pack identical spheres into a space of 24 dimensions was finally proved. Many of these problems are more than mere thought experiments. The origins of the Travelling Salesperson Problem - find the shortest route that visits a given set of cities - are self-explanatory. The Plateau problem, about the geometry of soap bubbles, now has applications as diverse as cosmology and biological development. Reaching for the Extreme tells the stories of these and other similar problems: their historical roots, the struggles to solve them, and the uses that can be made of the results, when such uses exist.

An exploration of Cuba's emerging digital culture and Cubans' creation of grassroots networks, digital black markets, and online spaces for public debateUntil just a few years ago, Cuba was one of the least-connected countries in the world. But as digital technology has become increasingly available, Cubans have found inventive ways to work around such remaining barriers as slow speeds, high costs, and inadequate infrastructure. In Island in the Net, Steffen Köhn examines Cuba's nascent digital culture and how it has reconfigured the relationship between the state and its citizens. Köhn shows that through innovations including "sneakernets" (the physical transfer of information by flash drives and other devices), digital black markets, and online spaces for political debates, Cubans have successfully challenged the government's monopoly on media and public discourse. Drawing on multisited ethnographic research, Köhn documents Cuba's digital awakening, from the introduction of accessible Wi-Fi in 2015 to the social media-fueled protests in July 2021. Cubans' community-driven digital innovations, he suggests, could be models for potential alternatives to the current Big Tech-dominated internet. Each chapter in Island in the Net is accompanied by a multimodal anthropology work: a video game, interactive installations, video art, an ethnographic documentary, and an expanded cinema installation. These unique media, created with Cuban artist Nestor Siré and other local collaborators, accessible to readers via a QR code, bring the book's argument vividly to life.

Technologies and technological futures are always socially situated, relational, and enmeshed in (dominant) narratives of societal sense-making, which have the power to bring future ideas into material existence. The issue brings together articles exploring popular techno-futures from international and interdisciplinary perspectives, including cultural and media studies, science and technology studies, and related disciplines. The contributors decenter the discussion on socio-technical futures and the role of popular culture, aesthetics and media in their (re)production by focusing on societal tech-future discourses from global popular perspectives.

A rethinking of “the social” in social media which includes the sexual. What can we learn from including sexual platforms in definitions of social media and, by extension, from including sex in definitions of “the social” itself? Hot Connections explores three locally operating sexual platforms: the Swedish Darkside, used by kink and BDSM practitioners; the Estonian Libertine Center, used mainly by non-monogamous people; and the Finnish Alastonsuomi, used for a wide variety of nude and sexual self-expression. What avenues do these platforms open for understanding the role that sexuality plays in people’s networked routines, social bonds, and forms of relating? Sexual social media affords freedom of worldmaking, belonging, and a right to sexually exist. While providing vital spaces for sexual self-expression—and indeed, hot connections—platform connectivity also involves friction as expectations, wishes, and desires clash and collide. Intervening in debates on the value of sexual social media, Hot Connections discusses what it means to research sexuality when sexual data is understood as sensitive by default; what platform governance may look like if viewed from the margins; and how sex and intimacy are not the same thing in networked sexuality.

Die Didaktik der Philosophie und Ethik muss jedoch die Lehrbarkeit der Philosophie bzw. die Praxis des Philosophierens als selbstverständlich voraussetzen. Die Beiträger*innen diskutieren dieses grundlegende Spannungsfeld mit Blick auf Schule, Hochschule und das Philosophieren in und mit der Öffentlichkeit. Dabei nehmen sie nicht nur theoretische Fragen in den Blick, sondern beleuchten auch exemplarische und unterrichtspraktische Beispiele.

How workers and customers engage utility regulation to act on climate change, energy affordability, and environmental, racial, and economic injustice. Electric Life traces the intertwined history of Atlanta’s racialized uneven development and growing electricity use to show how electricity infrastructure shapes everyday life. Nikki Luke looks at how quotidian relationships with the electric utility catalyze intersectional organizing for energy democracy. She also investigates the legal and material construction of the investor-owned utility as a regulated monopoly and the state public service commission that regulates it. Contemporary organizing for energy democracy questions how the utility and the systems that govern it need to change to ensure energy affordability, provide remedy and reparation for enduring environmental and energy injustice, and build a just and equitable energy transition from fossil fuels. Bridging urban, environmental, and labor studies, the author demonstrates how these demands to change the utility emerge from the tradition of civil rights, labor, and environmental organizing for fair treatment from the utility, affordable energy, protection from pollution, and good jobs.
