Before the tragedy of the Holocaust, many of the leading art and antiques dealers across Europe were Jewish, establishing dynamic cross-Channel, international and transatlantic networks. Aside from a few famous examples, however, we are only at the beginning of exploring the diversity of Jewish dealers' commercial and cultural worlds, and reflecting on the particular conditions that made possible their dramatic expansion within the profession. Adopting a wider geography than any previous study, this book brings together a team of distinguished international contributors to consider Jewish art dealers as an interconnected cohort, tied together by common strategies and a shared vulnerability. After an extended historiographical introduction, the volume presents case studies and trends from 1860-1940, including: Jewish family businesses in Western Europe; the role of Jews as mediators of art from East Asia; the antisemitism and suspicion faced by Jewish dealers; Jews as theorists, exhibition makers and promoters of modern art ; and the geographical mobility and professional reinvention of Jewish dealers in times of economic and political crisis. With a wide variety of illustrations, including paintings, decorative arts, historic photographs and archival material, the volume adopts a mix of methodological approaches to analyse a key chapter in Jewish cultural history and in the history of the international art market. The book was inspired by a free weekly newsletter that editor Rachel Meade Smith started ten&nbsp;years ago, Words of Mouth, which shares curated jobs and opportunities with an engaged community of over 70,000.&nbsp;From this community,&nbsp;Search Work&nbsp;brings together a diverse group of contributors—writers, artists, public servants, researchers, service workers, career changers, recent grads—to defang one of life's loneliest activities through an act of collaborative creation.

Introducing new insights into the history of ceramic design and consumption, Neil Ewins departs from the focus on manufacturers and producers and presents a third perspective that puts the multifaceted lives of the merchants, importers and dealers at the centre. Challenging the notion that intermediaries involved in the Anglo-American ceramic trade from the late 18th into the 19th century were simply motivated by maximizing profits and widespread market demands, Ewin's alternative approach demonstrates the value of taking their culture, identity and conscience into account. The geographic gap between the British manufacturer and the American consumer meant that those involved in mercantile activities assumed a highly significant role. Ewins analyses a range of sources including city directories, advertisements, newspapers and family trees to identify those involved in the ceramic trade, supplemented by archival material relating to the Wainwright and Ovington families. Illustrated with examples of ceramics and engravings, chapters explore how the intermediaries commissioned and marketed ceramics for different reasons, influenced by their political, social, religious and moral views. Ewins investigates how culture and a strong sense of identity, the abolition movement, kinship and family ties, religious beliefs and community, and the interracial experience all played a part in the manufacture, distribution and consumption of ceramics in the US market. This volume demonstrates how the role of intermediaries deserves a place in the history of the Anglo-American ceramic trade; beyond design and consumption being production-led or market-led, it reveals that it could also be conscience-led and suggests the picture is far more complex than once understood.

Fashion and Beauty examines the role that innovation has played throughout fashion history. Moving beyond innovation as mere buzzword, Sutton looks at case studies of moments in history where innovation has initiated fundamental change. In the fashion and beauty industries-where relevance is everything-innovation is critical to survival and is often shaped by specific historical, cultural, economic, and sociological contexts. But innovation has become a buzzword, overused and generalized. Fashion and Beauty: Case Studies in Innovation identifies the various factors that define innovation, and innovation theories such as Schumpeter's, using a case study approach to explore innovative events in fashion and beauty ranging from the creation of maternity and plus-size women's apparel (Lane Bryant) and new textiles (DuPont's Kevlar) to the development of luxury streetwear (Dapper Dan), creative upcycling (feed sacks), and new markets in cosmetics (Fashion Fair) and business models in beauty (Weleda, Dr. Hauschka). The case studies incorporate salient contextual elements that factor into innovative developments as well as the entrepreneurial impulse both inside and outside of traditional economic systems. Sutton explores case studies of moments in history where innovation has initiated fundamental change, including recognition of new market segmentation (the rise of streetwear, beauty's turn to inclusivity), trends that turn into classics (athleisure wear), the creation of entirely new categories of apparel (maternity, plus-size), the use of technology for convenience and efficiency (e-commerce and social media), product improvement (advances in science of skin care), and as part of potential solutions to current fashion industry challenges (plant-based/upcycled products). Ultimately, each chapter considers the historical, political, and social context of each innovation along with its cultural meaning and impact.

What are immigrants to do when business opportunities abound in their new home, but banks refuse essential financial support? How could they make the journey in the first place without helping hands? In this lively history, Rebecca Kobrin chronicles the turn-of-the-twentieth-century Jewish immigrants who stepped up by doing the lending themselves. Arriving from the Russian Empire and settling primarily in New York, they made livelihoods by assisting fellow Jews so they could purchase passage to the United States and, after arriving, obtain credit that other lenders would not dare provide. Credit to the Nation traces the novel practices of bankers who not only enabled the flourishing of American Jewry but also revolutionized the US financial industry. Drawing on previously unexamined archival materials in Russian, Yiddish, German, and English, Kobrin tells a story that is also crucial to the history of New York, as immigrant bankers' financing of real estate transformed wide swathes of the city. Lenders drove a boom in the prices of tenement buildings, but heavy speculation eventually precipitated the downfall of immigrant banking. Kobrin notes in particular the case of the Bank of United States--a private lender catering primarily to Jewish businessmen--which the Federal Reserve refused to bail out from bankruptcy in 1930. Immigrants' grasping for credit, and the rise and fall of immigrant banks, gave way to a contemporary banking industry that, ironically, refuses credit to today's immigrants. Kobrin reminds us that now, as before, the denial of credit pushes entrepreneurial Americans into unregulated money-lending and the trap of endless debt.
