Capitalism has shaped the world in ways both visible and hidden. It structures how we live, how we work, and how we assign value to people and resources. In The Ends of the Earth, Franco Paz explores the rise of global capitalism through a history of labour, slavery, and environmental extraction, showing how the modern world was built on the coerced work of millions across continents. From the iron mines of Russia to the sugar plantations of the Caribbean, from Iberian salt works to New England fisheries, the labour of workers in one region made possible the exploitation of others. Raw materials, commodities, and human effort moved through vast planetary networks, connecting lives, economies, and environments in ways that reshaped the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and continue to shape our world today. Decentring traditional Eurocentric narratives, Paz reveals the human and ecological costs behind the wealth and power we take for granted. With vivid storytelling and meticulous research, The Ends of the Earth challenges readers to confront the enduring legacies of inequality, extraction, and exploitation that underpin contemporary capitalism.

A History of Consumption and Its Consequences

The Insatiable Empire

Handbook of Labor, Human Resources and Population Economics

What goals are still feasible for the politics of emancipation on a ruined planet? This is where we are. Today's techno-oligarchs are not concerned with saving the planet; rather, they have accepted the end of progress and are focused on safeguarding their wealth in the face of an impending political and ecological collapse. Artificial intelligence and algorithms make decisions for us. Climate breakdown has long steamed past the wreckage of the Paris Agreement.Perhaps the accelerationists have the right idea. Accelerationism - which aims to resolve the current crisis through the intensification of technological development - is the only philosophy not clinging to the now-extinct idea of progress. The idea has gained ground on both the left and right: but the right-wing is shot through with misanthropy, while the left remains entangled in a faith in technological progress and the domination of nature.Transcending capitalism at the end of progress requires a synthesis of the two. The result of this synthesis: Dark Socialism. From 'rock star philosopher' Kohei Saito comes an anticapitalist clarion call for our breakneck times, channeling despair into a socialist project equal to the end of progress.

A rollicking, eye-opening history of the Star Wars franchise: an unrivaled force in popular culture that changed the way Hollywood makes movies—and that is now imperiled by many of the industry forces it set in motion From the premiere of the first film in 1977, the Star Wars franchise not only captured the imaginations of billions of people—and billions of dollars of revenue—but also rewrote the rules of the entertainment industry. Game-changing special effects, must-have collectibles, and the richness of George Lucas’s ever-expanding narrative gave rise to a new Hollywood model in which the boundary between screen and life collapsed. Star Wars wasn’t just a movie, after all: it was an alternate universe, a moral code, a way of life. Over the last half-century, Wall Street Journal reporter Erich Schwartzel explains, the Star Wars franchise has relied on an anti-establishment ethos, the savvy of executives, and the devotion of moviegoers to become a new American myth. But since its fateful acquisition by Disney in 2012, Star Wars has become a cautionary tale of Hollywood excess, and its present status as a corporate holding bears little resemblance to its origins. Drawing on scores of insider interviews and surveying fifty years of American culture and commerce, Schwartzel delivers fresh perspective on the Star Wars story, bringing to life the scrappy creative spirit of Lucasfilm’s early days; the box-office frenzy that rang in Hollywood’s blockbuster era and gave rise to a new industry playbook; and the scores of fans whose lives have been shaped by this singular force. A panoramic narrative of dreams, obsession, and power, Rebels and Empires is the untold history of Hollywood’s most storied epic.

Star Wars and Fifty Years of Hollywood Mythmaking

Rebels and Empires

“Holm’s goal is to clarify and assess F. A. Hayek’s critique of legislation. The author knows the extant literature intimately and brings an interdisciplinary sensibility to his task. The result is a carefully-argued and original contribution to Hayekian studies. “–Bruce Caldwell
, Research Professor of Economics, Director, Center for the History of Political Economy, Duke University, USA and the author of
Hayek's Challenge
and
Hayek: A Life"This book is an in-depth treatment of F. A. Hayek's incomparable 20th Century contributions to the study of rules, order, and economy."–Vernon Smith
, Professor of Economics and Law at Chapman University, USA, and 2002 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics
This book argues for a comprehensive reframing of Friedrich Hayek, one of the most influential economic and social thinkers of the twentieth century. Its focus is on the role of legal philosophy and legislation in understanding Hayek's views on social and economic planning, and in particular his critique of socialism. The book examines Hayek's later works on the shortcomings of legislation as the primary political tool used by governments to coerce otherwise free economic activity. It argues that Hayek's view of social and especially legal rules equates to a reformulation of his critique of planned economies, which has so far been understood in purely economic terms. The book argues that Hayek should be considered an important scholar in the realm of complexity theory, showing that his writing on intertwined legal and economic systems paved the way for a greater understanding of how individual agents and the 'spontaneous order' of the economy is inevitably regulated by the rational social order brought about by moral and legal rules and institutions. The book itself seeks to break the tradition of studying Hayek's work from isolated legal or economic lenses. Cyril Holm
is an Associate Professor of Law at Karlstad University, Sweden. His academic background is in economics, the history of science and legal philosophy, the latter of which is currently his primary research interest. He has teaching and research experience at the interface of law, economics, complexity theory, technology and future studies.
