This short, engaging book challenges the widely held belief that ‘classical liberalism’ is the original and authentic form of liberalism. The book argues that this narrative – often used to position libertarianism as the true liberal tradition and social democratic liberalism as a distortion – is built on historical misunderstandings of the terms ‘liberal’ and ‘liberalism’.
Focusing on English and American contexts, the book uses primary sources to show that the free-market doctrines of Adam Smith, later interpreted by thinkers like Hayek and Friedman as libertarian principles, should not be conflated with liberalism. Instead, liberalism first emerged in nineteenth-century England as a political philosophy rooted in constitutionalism and republicanism. The book also examines how Franklin D. Roosevelt reshaped American political language by associating "liberals" with New Deal supporters and "conservatives" with its opponents. By exploring these two pivotal moments and the broader political and economic history that connects them, de Marneffe redefines classical liberalism and critiques rigid interpretations of liberal thought. Das vergangene viertel Jahrhundert hat gezeigt, dass sich die wirtschaftliche Lage Chinas extrem gewandelt hat. Die Wirtschaft ist in einem raschen Prozess enorm gewachsen. Eine zu schnelle wirtschaftliche Veränderung führt zwar zu mehr Wohlstand sowie zu mehr politischen und gesellschaftlichen Freiheiten für die Bevölkerungsmehrheit, bringt aber auch gravierende soziale und politische Konsequenzen mit sich: Soziale Destabilisierung und Ordnungsverlust sind im heutigen China vorzufinden.1 Diese sind u.a. durch die Umformulierung der Wirtschaftsethik im Rahmen der Wirtschaftsreformen nach 1978 und das daraus resultierende Anwachsen von Korruption verursacht. Im Zusammenhang mit der Korruption sind auch soziale Netzwerke (Guanxi-Netzwerke) in China als Folge sozialer Unsicherheit (Netzwerke geben den Betroffenen Sicherheit) als weitere Ursache anzusehen, wenn Guanxi-Netzwerke als illegale Austauschbeziehungen verstanden werden, weil sie auf die Erzielung von Macht und privaten Vorteilen abstellt. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es die soziökonomischen Faktoren Chinas (Wirtschaftsethik und Soziales Kapital bzw. Guanxi-Netzwerke) vorzustellen und die Einflussmöglichkeit dieser Faktoren im Kontext mit der Korruption auf die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit hin zu untersuchen. Dafür ist es sinnvoll, empirische Studien heranzuziehen.

In vielen gesellschaftlichen Debatten sind zwei unversöhnliche Lager entstanden, die im Feind-Freund-Schema denken und handeln, die aber zu Gemeinsamkeit und Kompromiss nicht mehr in der Lage sind. Das trägt verhängnisvoll zur Delegitimierung unserer demokratischen Institutionen bei.&nbsp;
 
 Gerade angesichts der Herausforderung der Dekarbonisierung und der weltpolitischen Lage mit aggressiven autokratischen Regimen auf dem Vormarsch können sich die demokratischen Wohlstandsnationen Europas und Nordamerikas eine solche Selbst-Schwächung nicht leisten. Eine Stärkung des sozialen Vertrauens und Zusammenhalts ist notwendig, um die Zukunft zu bestehen. Hierbei kommt der Wirtschaft eine Schlüsselrolle zu. Wir brauchen eine Ökonomie der Versöhnung.&nbsp;
 
 Die Geschichte insbesondere des New Deals und der sozialen Marktwirtschaft hat gezeigt: Es ist möglich, über große wirtschaftspolitische Programme nicht nur gesellschaftliche Spaltung zu überwinden, sondern auch Frieden zu sichern. Diese Programme sind heute nicht wiederholbar – unabdinglich wird aber sein, in sozialen Zusammenhalt gezielt zu investieren. Es geht nicht bloß um materielle Besserstellung, sondern um umfassende gesellschaftliche Teilhabe und soziale Anerkennung aller gesellschaftlichen Gruppen.&nbsp;
