This handbook on the "New" Space Economy (NSE) offers the first comprehensive analysis of the contemporary space economy. The "new" is characterized by commercialization, greater participation of the private sector, innovation, and increased engagement of national governments. Using multiple approaches, the volume conceptualizes the boundaries of an emerging field of inquiry, characterized by continuity and change and involving terrestrial and extraterrestrial activities. It covers the fundamental economic, institutional, and technological dynamics and assesses the socio-economic impact of the NSE. Largely a US and European phenomenon, the evolution of the NSE in other spacefaring nations such as China, India, Japan, and Russia is also examined. In The Oxford Handbook of the New Space Economy, chapters by both academics and practitioners systematically address the changing institutional arrangements, interactions between public and private actors, and the role of innovations and entrepreneurship. As constellations of satellites for earth observations, telecommunications, the internet, GPS, and other civilian applications tackle climate change and monitor natural disasters, the unsustainability of space activities due to orbital congestion and space debris is a reality. The 1967 UN Outer Space Treaty, which views space as a "global commons," needs revisiting to address regulatory challenges in space mining and other uses of extraterrestrial resources. This volume advances the state of knowledge on the dynamics of an emerging new space economy, identifies key stakeholders, and opens up future research areas for policymaking.

Development and Its Discontents is a critical examination of development studies' history and what it has become, and what it might yet be. It argues that the field is increasingly differentiated along competing modes of thought, worldviews, and claims to knowledge, bringing long-running debates about the study of development back into sharp focus. Drawing on cross-disciplinary thinking on development, from the rise of classical development economics and the anti-colonial momentum of the Bandung era to contemporary decolonial critiques, the book maps the intellectual currents that have shaped development studies and the tensions and debates that now structure it. The result is a framework for recognising the field's internal pluralism and for taking interdisciplinarity more seriously, without pretending that its disagreements are merely semantic. In this major reinterpretation of one of the greatest thinkers of the twentieth century, Geoff Goodwin draws on contemporary perspectives and issues emanating from the Global South in order to offer a new theory of the many possible paths through and beyond capitalism. Written both for readers new to Karl Polanyi and for those already familiar with his work, the book organizes itself around key Polanyian concepts such as the double movement, fictitious commodities, and decommodification. In each case, the book re-thinks and extends Polanyi's thought by drawing on more contemporary, Global-South-centered critiques of capitalism rooted in notions such as degrowth and decolonization. In exploring these ideas through case studies drawn primarily from Latin America and other parts of the Global South, Goodwin weaves a new theoretical framework that accounts for a wide range of pressing current issues, from food and housing to international trade and socioecological transformation.

Most works on Asian or global studies adopt mainstream Neoclassical methods to explain economic and social development. However, quantitative and optimisation techniques are unable to provide a deep understanding of policy change between the West and East Asia. To fill the gap, this book uses evolutionary perspective to interpret economic and social transformations of two global powers, namely, the United States and China. Specifically, this book outlines the roles of culture, institutions and entrepreneurship in the analysis. Instead of logical empiricism in the English tradition, our approach is interpretative and storytelling in continental European tradition. In other words, we adopt hermeneutics and phenomenology in the analysis and apply humanity to economics. There are two aims of this book. First, it outlines the evolution of Austrian evolutionary economics and second, the role of learning in the decision-making process.
