This book clarifies the cause and effect of Japan’s “Lost Three Decades”. By analyzing factors such as exchange rates, industrial structure, internal migration, and the labor market, and in part comparing them with those of the U.S. economy, it offers new insights into the significant structural transformations that have occurred in the Japanese economy. It particularly highlights the different performance between the manufacturing and non-manufacturing sectors as a cause of the prolonged stagnation. The asset price bubble of the 1980s and the strong yen in the 1990s altered the employment structure of the export-driven manufacturing sector, drawing laborers to the service sector. The resulting allocation of resources to the low-productivity service sector has delayed economic recovery. It also discusses problems of an excess concentration in the Tokyo Metropolitan area. This book not only identifies structural change in the Japanese economy but also provides a practical framework for a differential productivity economic growth model. Existing literature on textile supply chains has highlighted the importance of adopting sustainable practices in their operational activities, identifying institutional pressures and digital transformation as the main drivers of sustainable change. However, supply chains should be studied as relational networks capable of involving a multitude of actors. Sustainable outcomes, therefore, depend on the collaborative efforts within a network of interdependent firms. This book conceptualizes the supply chain as a network of relationships, shifting the focus from the individual to the collective. Achieving sustainable changes in the textile industry becomes the responsibility of an entire supply chain, involving multinational corporations, manufacturers, suppliers, and subcontractors.
To reconceptualize the supply chain as a relational network, this book adopts a theoretical approach rooted in relational sociology, which centers its analysis on social relationships rather than isolated individuals or social structures. This book proposes a radical rethink of how we fund our economy. Rather than disentangling public and corporate finance, this book shows how the two are forced to feed a never-ending force: growth. By re-visiting how money is created in our economy, the book proposes a new way of funding the economy using interest-free money creation.
Economic evaluation techniques like Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) reinforce the idea that to receive funding, a project need to generate economic growth. However, this book argues that the priority of the economics discipline should be to illuminate resource allocation and scarcity and propose ways to make the economy self-sustainable, helping to avoid inflation and poverty. To do this, the book highlights that not all public needs—such as social housing or other non-profit services—require economic growth. It argues that by decoupling public funding from taxation and interest-based borrowing, governments could more effectively fund essential public services that do not need to be profitable, thereby freeing the public sector from the growth imperative imposed by the current financial system. Preeti Raghunath is a Lecturer in Digital Media and Society at the University of Sheffield, UK. Over the past decade, she has traversed academic landscapes in India, Malaysia and the UK. Her research interests have broadly explored global communication, with a focus on policies, infrastructures and people. She conducted an expansive policy ethnography on community radio in South Asia, which was published as&nbsp;Community Radio Policies in South Asia: A Deliberative Policy Ecology Approach (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020). Her current theoretical and empirical research is on the global AI and data economy, especially as they play out in the Global South. Preeti has served as a research consultant with the United Nations University, Macau on projects on AI and its policies in Southeast Asia, and digital transformation and sustainability.
