This book investigates the policy choices and institutional frameworks that powered South Korea’s remarkable transformation from postwar poverty to a global economic powerhouse, while confronting the mounting structural challenges that now threaten its sustainability. It identifies ten key factors behind Korea’s rapid growth from the 1960s to the 1990s and examines pressing socioeconomic issues, including population aging, declining fertility, high suicide rates, political and economic polarization, early retirement, youth unemployment, and the expansion of private education. The book also analyzes deep inequalities within Korea’s labor market, such as persistent gender wage gaps, disparities between large conglomerates and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the divide between regular and non-regular employment, and the heavy reliance on self-employment. Finally, it addresses critical economic policy challenges, including rising household debt, real estate bubbles, minimum wage debates, inflation, an underdeveloped service sector, an undervalued stock market, inefficiencies in public enterprises and mutual financial cooperatives, a lagging tourism industry, the search for new growth engines, carbon neutrality commitments, and an outdated tax system. Offering fresh insights and concrete policy recommendations, the book highlights both the achievements and the vulnerabilities of Korea’s economic model.

This book helps to expand the global research scope of rural gentrification and promotes dialogue between China and the West on this topic. Focusing on rural China and using data collected through pro-longed ethnographic fieldwork, this book reveals the production and consumption of rural tourism gentrification from the perspective of middle-class gentrifiers. It explores the socio-demographic characteristics, motivations, and landscape practices of the middle-class gentrifiers, and the socioeconomic effects it brings to the rural villages, which differ significantly from rural gentrification in the Western context. Government efforts to promote rural revitalization will benefit greatly from the Chinese cases set out in this study. Therefore, this book is suitable for scholars, policymakers, government officials, and students interested in rural transformation and rural gentrification.

This monograph, based on the author's successful PhD dissertation, examines the community radio (CR) landscape in Nepal, India, and Bangladesh. It introduces an inclusionary South Asia-specific framework for analyzing CR, grounded in global alternative media theories.Using a mapping methodology, the monograph presents both primary and secondary data. Secondary data, gathered through desk reviews, is organized into a Community Media Database (CMD) for South Asia, while primary data from interviews and case studies is analyzed across four thematic areas: policy environment, ownership, community, and&nbsp;programming.The book offers detailed country profiles, case studies&nbsp;profiles, and a comprehensive analysis of the thematic areas&nbsp;in each country. It concludes with 24 guiding principles aimed at addressing challenges and opportunities for CR in South Asia.&nbsp;

This book explores the changes in the degree of toughness of China’s foreign policy choices in bilateral international disputes over the period from 1992 to 2022. Chinese popular nationalism, due to its considerable social mobilization capacity, may have the potential to influence the Chinese government's foreign policy choices through a bottom-up approach, especially in the context of the Chinese government's increasing reliance on nationalism for its regime legitimacy. The author establishes an analytical framework for China’s foreign policy choices in bilateral disputes, emphasising the influence of three factors: China’s perception of the importance of the bilateral relations, its perception of the priority of the interests involved in the dispute, and its perception of the severity of the dispute. Through a series of case studies, the author demonstrates that the influence of Chinese popular nationalism on government policy is limited. This book offers fascinating insights for policymakers, journalists and scholars.Weijun Xu
 is an assistant research fellow at the Institute of Public Policy, South China University of Technology. He received his Ph. D. from the University of Cambridge in 2024. His research interests include East Asian international relations, nationalism, Chinese diplomacy, and Sino-US relations.

This book showcases the work of Annapurna Pariwar, an NGO comprising six organizations, over the past 30 years and its impact on changing the lives of low-income working women with small businesses in the slums of Mumbai and Pune in the Indian state of Maharashtra. This group of six organizations together forms a social enterprise, established at a time of major changes in the Indian economy in the form of globalization and urbanization. The NGO set out to address issues of livelihood and poverty alleviation in slums. Adopting a path that was sustainable and did not depend upon grants, the journey is a fascinating account of learnings in organizational evolution and its impact on the lives of poor women.The book is divided into two parts. The first part has three chapters charting the journey of Annapurna Pariwar based on interviews with Medha Tai, the founder of Annapurna Pariwar. These chapters discuss milestones, organizational evolution, and challenges, especially demonetization and COVID-19. The lifecycle of the organization and of the women in the case studies are juxtaposed within the framework of financial, physical, sociocultural, and political spaces. The second part of the book contains analyses from well-known authors and academics who contextualize the relevance of Annapurna Pariwar’s work and future against microfinance, microinsurance, plus services, social entrepreneurship, digitization, and urban landscapes. The book thus contributes not only to the practice-field; it has several academic contributions as well for researchers studying social phenomena such as social entrepreneurship, microfinance, cooperatives, women empowerment, and women entrepreneurship. While doing so, it addresses SDGs such as SDG3, SDG5, SDG8, and SDG11. The book is for a wide audience, comprising social entrepreneurs in the field of social development, microfinance, and microinsurance. It is of relevance to business schools and educational institutions which offer courses on social entrepreneurship and development studies.
