The twelve papers collected in this volume of Research in Political Economy mark a new phase in the study of capitalism, centred on the reproduction of total social capital. They address the widely felt need to reconnect political economy with real-world phenomena, including financial crises, long-term stagnation, poverty, inequality, and economic injustice.
Seeking to renew pluralist dialogue among all currents critical of the dominant neoclassical paradigm-particularly those aiming to move beyond the equilibrium framework that permeates it-the volume offers important new insights into Marx's value theory. These constitute a significant addition to both the existing body of Marx studies and to a broader understanding of capitalist reproduction, accumulation, and the sources of their recurrent failures.
This shared engagement rests on the recognition that the study of the circuit of capital can shed fresh light on the fundamental concepts of money, price, value, and credit, and on their role in explaining capitalism's 'laws of motion': accumulation, historical origins, and reproduction itself. The volume thus advances critical debates and paves the way for future research on the dynamics of capitalist reproduction.

This book attempts to answer the most fundamental questions of BRI by applying economic methods: What is, what to do, and how to do. Whether in China or the international community, whether in academia or in decision-making circles, there is no consensus on these issues, even though BRI has been around for eight years. As a result, there are many misunderstandings and suspicions about BRI, which have become a major obstacle to its smooth development. As an academic study, this book is not a simple interpretation of the official Chinese BRI representation, but an analysis of it is based on a unified theoretical framework. In addition to tracing the evolution of BRI and the cognition of the international community, the focus of this book is to analyze the attributes, positioning, and governance structure of BRI, as well as to discuss the internal and external risks it faces and its future development direction. The author starts from the development orientation of BRI (different from the current rule orientation of global governance) and makes a normative definition of it. Emphasizing development orientation does not mean that BRI does not need rules, but to jointly formulate rules according to the needs of development. Therefore, one of the directions to promote the high-quality development of BRI is institutionalization.

Municipal Councillors in Europe, Volume I

This open access book examines climate policy effort among subnational governments participating in the Under2 Coalition. The central research question investigates whether Under2 Coalition founding members demonstrate greater climate policy effort compared to early joiners (2015-2016) and later joiners (post-2016), and whether these performance differences persist over time. The empirical analysis focuses on subnational governments in five countries that played influential roles in founding and developing the Under2 Coalition: Canada, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The study makes three key contributions to climate governance literature. First, it systematically demonstrates how climate policy effort and leadership dynamics evolve within the Under2 Coalition framework. Second, it provides genuinely comparative insights across two dimensions—comparing different membership categories within countries and across nations. Third, it offers a replicable methodological template for expanding this research approach to other contexts.
By examining quantifiable indicators including policies, policy instruments, and greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets, the book provides valuable insights into how multilevel climate governance can be strengthened and sustained over time, bridging theory and practice in understanding subnational climate action.

This book clarifies the cause and effect of Japan’s “Lost Three Decades”. By analyzing factors such as exchange rates, industrial structure, internal migration, and the labor market, and in part comparing them with those of the U.S. economy, it offers new insights into the significant structural transformations that have occurred in the Japanese economy. It particularly highlights the different performance between the manufacturing and non-manufacturing sectors as a cause of the prolonged stagnation. The asset price bubble of the 1980s and the strong yen in the 1990s altered the employment structure of the export-driven manufacturing sector, drawing laborers to the service sector. The resulting allocation of resources to the low-productivity service sector has delayed economic recovery. It also discusses problems of an excess concentration in the Tokyo Metropolitan area. On one hand, it provides funds for urban development and on the other hand, its excessive expansion would depress the urban growth. To balance the two effects, the governments try to adjust their regulation policies dynamically. These policies to a great extent determine the rise and fall of urban economy. This book is divided in to four parts. The first part elaborates the relationship between the real estate sector and urban economy and explains the mechanism of the former’s impact on the later. The second part investigates the interaction of the real estate sector and the industrial sector and the consequences. The third part discusses the real estate tax reform and the affordable housing system. At the last part, I discuss the prospect of China real estate economy through the case of Evergrand’s debt crisis. The China-Europe Railway Express

A new paradigm based on quantum probability that can model stock markets and price options—and also upends classical quantitative finance. In The Quantum Stock Market, David Orrell combines theory and new empirical findings to argue for a new approach to finance based on quantum probability. The main finding, a property called q-variance, may be unique in finance in that it was discovered as the result of a prediction, affects financial markets in general, has no tunable parameter, and has important consequences for a range of topics including the pricing of financial options. The property, which somehow eluded detection for over a century, has been verified by experts in the field. And the fact that it is incompatible with classical finance—which is perhaps why it went undetected—suggests that the field must be reinvented. The aim of this book is therefore nothing less than to initiate a paradigm shift in finance. As with any new work that challenges existing methods, the ideas have already received considerable pushback from a range of sources, including leaders in the field of finance, along with physicists skeptical of applying quantum probability outside its traditional domain.
