Reciprocity begins with a simple but unsettling question: why have we come to believe that human beings are naturally self-interested, competitive and acquisitive? This galvanising, perspective-shifting book dismantles the myth of Homo economicus to show us the way towards a world whose realities align with our true selves.Drawing on a variety of disciplines, including anthropology, archaeology, evolutionary biology, psychology, economics and social epidemiology, Richard Wilkinson demonstrates that the characteristics which we assume to be our human nature are in fact effects of the market societies we live in. He traces how various systems of exchange have created profoundly different forms of social life throughout the course of history, shaping our behaviours, motivations, and the kinds of people we become. Though it may often feel like it, the avarice and oppressions that defines the twenty-first century are not an unchangeable reality we simply have to live with. The book explains why inequality, status competition and consumerism hold so much power over us and reveals the depths to which these forces are entwined with the ever-rising crises of mental illness, political polarisation and environmental destruction. Rather than asking how we can make individuals behave better, it makes a compelling case for restructuring our societies to make life happier, meaningful and more fulfilling for one and all.Rigorously researched, bracingly practical and full of passion and hope in equal measure, Reciprocity offers a bold reinterpretation of the world we live in. It equips us with the necessary tools to look beyond and remake it in our very own, amiably human image.

Reclaiming Our Humanity from the Market

Reciprocity

"Take a fascinating journey with Pobsook Chamchong to learn what it takes for a hierarchical nation to produce policy innovation. Her counterintuitive insight is that innovating in such a context depends on cultivating a deep commitment to co-creation."
--Christopher Ansell, Professor, University of California, Berkeley.
“This book is a must read for anybody interested in how to stimulate co-creation of innovative solutions to societal problems in societies that are hierarchical both in terms of formal power distribution and cultural norms. Based on theoretical reflection and empirical inquiry, Pobsook emphasizes the crucial role that innovation cultivators play in building an ecosystem that supports and promotes cocreated innovation. An important contribution to the existing research is that she brings to light the importance of not only promoting horizontal network connections between local actors but also vertical networks between actors at different levels in organizational and communal hierarchies.”
--Eva Sørensen, Professor, Roskilde School of Governance, Roskilde University, Denmark.
This book examines policy innovation in highly hierarchical societies, particularly in Asia. Drawing on an insightful case study from Thailand, it assesses how policy innovations come to be cultivated at the sub-national level of a centralised government. In particular, the book assesses the role of policy innovation cultivators in the policymaking process, including the constraints placed upon them and the tactics they employ to overcome them. Whilst this topic has received much attention from scholars in democratic societies, far less studies have examined the role of policy innovation cultivators in Asia and the Global South, where countries are often governed by hierarchical, semi-autocratic governments. The book therefore offers important insights into how the role of these cultivators differs in different parts of the world, depending on the political context, administrative system, and socio-cultural setting in which they operate. It also highlights the need for culturally sensitive approaches to studying policy innovation, tracing a journey through generative policy ecosystems. It will appeal to all those interested in public policy, public administration and governance, as well as politics in Asia and the Global South.
Pobsook Chamchong is Assistant Professor in the School of Public Policy, Chiang Mai University, Thailand.

Cultivating Policy Innovation in Hierarchical Societies

A lyrical work of philosophy that draws from the work of Spinoza, George Eliot, biographers, memoirists, and more to examine how wisdom and goodness are transmitted by individual human lives. Transcendence for Beginners is an innovative book about philosophy and life writing, exploring how each practice might complement the other and so contribute to a greater understanding of human existence. Reflecting on writers and thinkers from Europe and India—such as Benedict Spinoza and Søren Kierkegaard, Ramana Maharshi and Marcel Proust—Clare Carlisle examines how deep, genuine wisdom and goodness are transmitted by individual lives. She considers her own intertwined pursuits as a philosopher and a biographer, as well as her roles as a mother and a daughter. Animated by the spirit of inquiry and the desire to share its rewards, Transcendence for Beginners is a generous, enlivening work by one of today's most original thinkers.

In How the Regime Rules, New York Times bestselling author Christopher Rufo delivers a bold, unflinching examination of how America’s founding spirit was transformed—and, in his telling, betrayed—by the rise of modern bureaucratic power. In How the Regime Rules, Christopher F. Rufo—the New York Times bestselling author who nuked Critical Race Theory, gutted DEI in corporate boardrooms, put Somali fraud on the map, and toppled the president of Harvard—delivers his most explosive work yet: a manifesto for the evolving right and a scorched-earth blueprint to shatter the invisible power structure that now governs America. We all know the Regime. It’s the interlocking web of the Deep State bureaucracy, biased media, corrupted academia, and corporate middle managers that enforces conformity, doles out status to favorites, and crushes dissent. Instead of ruling by winning elections, the Regime rules through cultural capture—dictating what you are allowed to say, think, and believe. Rufo strips back the curtain on their operation, turning the Left’s own playbook against them to show how a radical minority seized the commanding heights of American life. He tracks the bureaucratic rot that traded our founding spirit for a system of managed decline, from the administrative state’s silent coup to the ideological hijacking of our elite institutions. But the time for grievance-filled exposés is past. Now is the time to build real, lasting political power. The old GOP establishment failed because it spent decades begging for a seat at the Regime’s table—only to be mocked, then discarded. The "New Right" too often gets distracted by petty revenge and backward-looking saltiness. Rufo rejects both. Instead, he offers a high-energy, forward-looking vision: building a counter-elite that is rooted in real community, culturally dominant, relentlessly entrepreneurial, and unapologetically patriotic—just like the Founding Fathers. Patriots are already building independent businesses, parallel media ecosystems, homeschool networks, and tech startups that operate entirely outside the Regime’s thumb. Rufo provides a practical counterrevolution roadmap—dismantling the power of bloated bureaucracies, purging left-wing racialism from federal agencies, restoring merit in our universities, and shifting the fight from pure culture wars to the economic realities of the working man. Build it well—make it vibrant, profitable, and bold—and the American people will follow in droves. How the Regime Rules moves us past easy wins or empty nostalgia. It equips us with the strategy, tactics, and spirit required for total national reconstruction. Drawing on his hard-won victories and a cold-blooded analysis of how power actually works, Rufo shows how a new generation can seize the initiative, recapture the American spirit, and restore self-government.

October Files

How contemporary artist Glenn Ligon’s expansive body of work mines American history and literature to ask critical questions about modern culture. OCTOBER Files: Glenn Ligon presents the first compilation of critical discourse on the multimedia work of one of the most influential American artists of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Often citing or annotating past literary (e.g., James Baldwin), artistic (e.g., Andy Warhol), and musical (e.g., Steve Reich) interventions, Ligon’s practice imaginatively explores the contradictions of speech, vision, authorship, identity, blackness, and belonging in works that are at once historically resonant and materially sensuous. Spanning Ligon’s emergence in the postmodern multicultural milieu of New York in the late 1980s and early ‘90s, his starring turns at Documenta, the Venice Biennale, and other international exhibitions of the 2000–2010s, and his formative impact on both new and canonical art histories, this volume provides a comprehensive accounting of the questions central to his work in painting, sculpture, video, installation, and print. With texts by writers from Wayne Koestenbaum to Rizvana Bradley, this File not only plumbs the depths of Ligon’s oeuvre but also models the various approaches to critical writing that have defined art and culture of the past 30 years.

From the author of the groundbreaking exposé Gomorrah comes a book that encourages and challenges the people to stand up for themselves and to not be fooled by the coercive nature of political power. Featuring short biographical sketches of a surprising mix of admired and deplored figures and works from history, this is a book that demands of readers to open one’s eyes and be outraged. The iconic Italian author Roberto Saviano’s latest work of nonfiction is an urgent cry for people to stand up for themselves and the things they believe in, featuring those who have most inspired him—Russian poet Anna Akhmatova, Martin Luther King Jr., the Calipygian Venus, immortalized in marble—alongside those whose actions were most deplorable—Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels and Rwandan radio host Kantano Habimana, who encouraged the 1993-’94 genocide there. Saviano quotes the Italian author and Auschwitz survivor Primo Levi: “I write what I wouldn’t be able to tell anyone.” Saviano, like Levi, embraces his readers within a similar protective halo of intimacy, taking us in his arms to warn us. Other lives and works that Saviano evokes in Shout It Out! are Hypatia, the murdered Alexandrian philosopher, mathematician and astronomer; political theorist Carl Schmitt; trailblazing Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya; Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi; NSA Whistleblower Edward Snowden; 16th century astrology and alchemist Giordano Bruno, burned at the stake by the Inquisition in 1600; Russian poet Anna Akhmatova who chose silence rather than collaboration; Émile Zola; the Brothers Grimm; Martin Luther King; murdered anti-corruption activist Daphne Caruana Galizia; the ancient roman statue of the Callipygian Venus; Terry Bollea (Hulk Hogan); American actress Jean Seberg; Italian filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini; Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels; Rwandan radio host Kantano Habimana; Settimia Spizzichino, one of 50 from the Rome ghetto sent to Auschwitz, and the only survivor; Chinese poet and factory worker Lizhi Xu; Italian-American saint Sister Francesca Saverio Cabrini; Italian architect and London fire victim Gloria Trevisan; George Floyd. Shout It Out dives into world history—and Roberto Saviano’s mind—in a way that constantly surprises.

Genders and Sexualities in the Social Sciences

“This thoughtfully curated collection of interdisciplinary essays not only interrogates Western understandings of feminist resistance but also challenges conventional understandings of the South Asian subcontinent as a motley crew of postcolonial states. Revealing it instead as a dynamic region marked by a variety of interconnected activisms. Taken together, the editor’s and authors’ feminist and critical regional South Asian lens on ideas and representations of gender and sexuality as well as movements, policies, and everyday experiences pertaining to gender and sexuality offer us invaluable fresh perspectives that help us re-envision linkages between the global, regional, and local.” —Elora Shehabuddin, Professor of Gender & Women’s Studies, University of California, Berkeley, USA
“South Asia’s rich tradition of multiplicity in gender, colonialism and postcolonial, law, culture and economy, new patterns of gender politics, grassroots organizing, key legal cases, violence, migration, media and state strategies are all illuminated in this valuable collection of studies from six countries.” —Raewyn Connell, University of Sydney, Australia
“Drawing on ethnographic, historical, and theoretical legacies of gender diversity authors offer nuanced, original, and complex enactments of identities and activist social movements in South Asia. A provocative and valuable contribution to decolonizing studies of gender and sexuality”. —Chandra Talpade Mohanty, Distinguished Professor and Chair, Women’s and Gender Studies, Syracuse University, USA
This edited volume is a decolonial/deconstructive approach to South Asian gender and sexuality studies, which it reimagines through a pluralized, multivariate lens. It decenters hegemonic feminist debates and rearticulates gender and sexuality through critical regionalism, border-politics, land and social movements, indigeneity, law and jurisprudence and broader social textuality. Chapters offer perspectives from the humanities, social sciences, public health, international relations and law, as well as organizers and advocates committed to women and gender studies.

Domination, ecological crises and many other pathologies are intrinsic features of capitalism, not bugs that can be corrected. But is a better way of organizing society possible?

Marx called for a society where the ruling principle is "the full and free development of every individual". Capitalism neither is nor can be such a society. But if we can imagine one, can we be confident it could be put into practice? The answer to both questions is an emphatic 'Yes!' This book makes the case for a workable model of republican socialism, a vision of socialism worth fighting for.

This book offers a thorough investigation of how Citizen Charters may be effective vehicles for improving accountability, transparency, and citizen engagement in local governance, focusing particularly on Bangladesh's experience within the broader South Asian context, highlighting how Citizen Charters may empower people and change local government responsiveness in developing nations. Structured across eight thematically interconnected chapters, the book starts with a solid conceptual and theoretical analysis of local government and accountability systems. It then compares implementation strategies in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan—finding insights and challenges that speak universally. It then moves on to investigate the history of Citizen Charters and the path of local government reform in Bangladesh, revealing the contextual reality, institutional constraints, and reform initiatives influencing service delivery.
The book offers insights into how Citizen Charters function in practice, what hinders their effectiveness, and how their potential might be tapped by drawing on actual case studies from Union Parishads—Bangladesh's lowest tier of rural local government. It is essential reading for scholars of public administration, governance, and development studies; legislators looking for evidence-based reform ideas; NGO workers focussing on civic involvement and accountability; and anyone curious about how grassroots tools such as Citizen Charters can support the inclusive and accountable government in the Global South.

Industrial Policies for Pacific Economic Growth (1986) explores the issues surrounding industrial policy within the context of the major Pacific economies and their interaction with each other and the rest of the world. The first part of this volume deals with 'de facto' industrial policy - the range of diverse measures governments undertake to encourage the development of particular industries at the expense of others. The second part examines the industrial policies of some developed Pacific countries (the US, Canada and Japan) and industrial policy and growth strategies in developing countries (Taiwan and ASEAN). The third part scrutinises specific industries which are particularly important for the developing countries of the Pacific region: iron and steel, textiles and clothing, automobiles and petrochemicals. The fourth part discusses regional aspects of industrial policy with reference to ASEAN and China.

Radical Economics (1982) explores the major themes of radical economics. It begins by considering the shortcomings of orthodox economics, and goes on to consider how radical economics evolved. The question of Marxian economics and how this applies to crucial contemporary issues is then considered, and the book concludes by examining aspects of the Communist bloc's economic system, where radical theories are applied in practice.
