Critical Criminological Perspectives

This book considers the lessons that can be gleaned from the Occupy movement, some 14 years after its inception. The Occupy movement brought with it many things, including a renewed interest in class and class struggle. Using the work of Nicos Poulantzas as its departure point, the book considers the theoretical and conceptual parameters of class structures under the most contemporary form of capitalism: the monopoly finance capitalist stage. An examination of state responses to the Occupy movement reveals the ability of the exploiting classes to maintain and reproduce the capitalist system via an expression of political power through the state and its tendency to deploy both ideological and physical defenses against any significant attacks on capitalism. The analysis offered reveals how some degree of anti-capitalist opposition is tolerated until such time that it must be forcefully censored and stopped, coined here as ‘the authoritarian state with a democratic alter-ego’, offering a nuanced conceptualization of state power for readers to explore and apply for themselves in other contexts. For the nature of the state to change significantly, social class agents need to find ways to access greater autonomy from the shackles of its power. This book explores the ways in which attempts to take up counterhegemonic class positions are persistently thwarted by a pervasive and yet intricately configured state power, backed by profit motivated corporate interest. It also poses urgent questions about the role and nature of alliances when trying to challenge both ideological and forcefully repressive state practices under capitalism. The book considers how we ‘find each other’ again in future struggles against capitalism and the attendant harms that it produces for the whole of humanity and the planet.

Aid effectiveness remains a global concern, especially given most developing countries’ reliance on foreign aid for their development efforts. The aid effectiveness agenda, shaped by a series of international conferences, declarations, and high-level forums, notably the Paris Declaration, sought to transform global aid practices.  &nbsp;is a faculty member at the Department of Japanese Studies, University of Dhaka. He is the Executive Director of the Japan-based think tank Pan-Asia Research Institute (PARI), Tokyo, Chairman of Democracy Dais Bangladesh, and Research Fellow at the South Asian Network on Economic Modelling (SANEM). He holds a PhD in International Development Cooperation and a Postgraduate Certificate in Research Methodology from the University of Huddersfield, UK. &nbsp;He has completed a Certificate in Law from the University of Northumbria, UK. He earned his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Sociology from the University of Dhaka, and he also holds an MBA in Marketing. His areas of specialisation include development cooperation, development sociology, and Japanese Studies. He has worked with various national and international organisations such as USAID, UNDP, JICA, JETRO, BRAC, ASA, and several agencies of the Government of Bangladesh, such as the Economic Relations Division (ERD), Cabinet Division, and National Academy for Planning and Development (NAPD).

This book sorts out the causes, consequences and the evolution path of China's economic reform process from the historical dimension of China's economic policy changes, from which the long-standing contradictions and conflicts between the two different models can be seen throughout the process, i.e. the market economy and the state-dominated economy (e.g., Lenin's 'special state capitalism') as well as the potential risks that will be brought by the pause of market and law reform on China's economic and social development. The dispute on the paths exists and will continue, which builds the great complexity and arduousness since China's Reform and Opening-up. This book is written by Chinese economist Jinglian Wu, which helps readers to understand the history and logic behind China's reform and opening-up, as well as the challenges China is facing.

Long self-proclaimed as the "Knowledge Bank", the World Bank is as active it is criticized for being in its endeavors to promote US interests in the the age of globalization, neoliberalism and financialization across its scholarship, ideology and policy in practice. Its analytical framing draws upon economics imperialism in general, and its evolution through three phases. Corresponding phases of new, newer and newest development economics are identified, with the World Bank taking a leading role in each, with implications for the expanding scope of development economics and its contestations with development studies.&nbsp;

This book reveals how the formation of the Chinese socialist system in the 1950s dramatically transformed the nation’s economy, and charts how the newly established economic system functioned during the planned economy period (1949-1978), through focusing on Shanghai, which had served as the center of China’s modern economy since the latter half of the nineteenth century. Drawing on the rich historical primary sources of the Shanghai Municipal Archives, this study examines the impact of the institutional change wrought by the introduction of the socialist system on Shanghai’s economy, through a careful comparison with the economic structure before 1949. Moreover, it also explores the distinctive features of the Chinese socialist system, first and foremost the relationship between local governments and local businesses that came about through the socialist transformation of private enterprise, by analyzing Shanghai’s fiscal structure and a series of key industries, including the textile, machinery, rubber processing, cement, and power industries. This historical study proffers a new understanding of the long-term economic history of modern China across the pivotal 1949 and 1978 divides and sheds light on the origin of what has come to be known as "socialism with Chinese characteristics" today.
