How can people peacefully cooperate with others to improve their lives? This important book answers this question by introducing readers to the Austrian school of economics. Austrian economics is a heterodox tradition with a distinct philosophy of science stressing purposive individual action, subjective value, the unique nature of economic knowledge, and the importance of prices and markets for coordination. Beginning in Austria in the 1870s with the work of Carl Menger, the ideas of those working in this tradition shaped the field of economics as we know it today. Coyne and Hall tell the story of the key thinkers and ideas in the Austrian school. In doing so, they demonstrate the tradition's ongoing relevance to a wide range of contemporary issues, including entrepreneurship, development, government regulation, artificial intelligence, business cycles and recessions, infectious diseases, recovery from natural disasters, and war. Comprehensive and accessibly written, Austrian Economics: An Introduction is an indispensable resource on its topic. Readers will come away with a better understanding of economics and an appreciation of the marvel of human cooperation.

An Introduction

Austrian Economics

Independent, inflation-targeting central banks were supposed to deliver stable prices, financial stability and lasting prosperity. Instead, they have presided over financial crises, stagnant growth, rising inequality and the return of inflation. Yet policy makers and politicians have proved remarkably reluctant to challenge the orthodoxy. Why has this model proved so resilient-and what should replace it? In The Gods That Failed, economist Josh Ryan-Collins argues that today's macroeconomic policy framework rests on five powerful myths that have shaped economic thinking since the 1980s. From the "natural" rate of interest and the management of inflation expectations to efficient financial markets and the taboos surrounding fiscal dominance and credit policy, these ideas continue to constrain policymakers even as the evidence against them becomes overwhelming. Blending colourful economic history, cutting-edge research and vivid real-world examples, Ryan-Collins opens-up the often opaque and technocratic world of monetary and financial policy for a wide readership and illustrates its fundamental flaws. At a time of repeated economic and financial shocks, ecological breakdown and geopolitical instability, The Gods That Failed argues that rebuilding our economies will require a wholesale rethinking of how central banks, governments and financial institutions work together to manage money, credit and the macroeconomy.

Rethinking Central Banking and Macrofinancial Policy for the Age of Polycrisis

The Gods that Failed

"A powerful novel set in a Hong Kong that feels remarkably universal." —Mohsin Hamid, author of Exit West "A dazzling, page-turning novel...Gripping, specific, important, and highly satisfying.” —Elif Batuman, author of The Idiot and Either/Or A powerful, award-winning novel that follows the lives of two women as democracy starts to crumble in Hong Kong On a weekend morning, college roommates Ah Lei and Panda wake up with very different reactions to the night before. They have been chased and tear-gassed in the streets of their city after joining tens of thousands of others to protest a national security law that would effectively spell the end of democracy in Hong Kong. Ah Lei can’t get out of bed, her heart heavy with the lingering images of the police and the violence on the streets, and her worries about the future of her hometown. Panda, whose resistance is no less ardent, puts on a sundress, lines her eyes, and urges Ah Lei to join her for brunch. While the demonstrations rage, the routine of life also persists for Ah Lei, Panda, and people in their orbits. They attend family gatherings, fight with their mothers, try and fail to focus at work on Mondays, and make time for dinner dates and app hookups. But the looming political tension and anxiety for the future transform such everyday encounters. In the span of a few months, life as they know it seems to become a mirage: the comfort of air-conditioned shopping malls is disrupted by bloodshed; tear gas and the sounds of rubber bullets amid neon signs strangely evoke happier memories of summer night fireworks. Gigi L. Leung’s visceral novel Everyday Movement reveals existential questions that interrupt normal life: belonging, patriotism, and the meaningfulness of an electoral democracy, as well as the pampering sense of normalcy created by consumerism. Fiery and tender, Leung’s writing captures the heartbreak, turmoil, and rebirth in bearing witness to and engaging with a shattering reality.

SHORTLISTED FOR THE TS ELIOT PRIZE 2025 SHORTLISTED FOR THE JHALAK PRIZE 2026 '(c) Codex' SHORTLISTED FOR THE FORWARD PRIZE FOR BEST SINGLE POEM LONGLISTED FOR THE GRIFFIN POETRY PRIZE 2026 'Profound, sheer originality... a tantalising jigsaw puzzle of a book' Tristram Fane-Saunders, Telegraph In The New Carthaginians, time - and with it the world - is out of joint. A hijacked plane lands at Entebbe International Airport in 1976, triggering the crisis that will lead to Idi Amin's Uganda becoming a pariah state and, within a few years, to the young Nick Makoha's flight from the country. A mysterious writer daubs poetic slogans on the walls of late-'70s New York City, signing them SAMO(c). Three characters who are also one - the Poet, a Black Icarus and a resurrected Jean-Michel Basquiat - journey through a time that is both our own and not, watching TV, discussing art and literature and tucking their wings into their jackets on the way to airport security. Concerned throughout with flight and falling, the sample and the loop, The New Carthaginians is a poetry collection of staggering originality: a work by an author at the height of his powers, in which the familiar Western canons of art, history and philosophy are prised apart and reassembled in a new configuration. Drawing on Basquiat's technique of the 'exploded' collage, our heroes' odyssey gathers the symbols of a new mythos, through which the othering of Black life might be undone and the stage set for some fresh emergence, some transfigured understanding of myth and life. 'Hold that note,' writes the poet. 'In this place you are no longer the chorus ... In any future, remember you are a New Carthaginian.' A FINANCIAL TIMES BEST SUMMER BOOK OF POETRY 2025 'In this book, Nick Makoha has found an otherworldly, visionary voice and diction that arrest you from the first page and never let you go.' Jason Allen-Paisant, Winner of the TS Eliot Prize

The New Carthaginians

From the author of the groundbreaking exposé Gomorrah comes a book that encourages and challenges the people to stand up for themselves and to not be fooled by the coercive nature of political power. Featuring short biographical sketches of a surprising mix of admired and deplored figures and works from history, this is a book that demands of readers to open one’s eyes and be outraged. The iconic Italian author Roberto Saviano’s latest work of nonfiction is an urgent cry for people to stand up for themselves and the things they believe in, featuring those who have most inspired him—Russian poet Anna Akhmatova, Martin Luther King Jr., the Calipygian Venus, immortalized in marble—alongside those whose actions were most deplorable—Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels and Rwandan radio host Kantano Habimana, who encouraged the 1993-’94 genocide there. Saviano quotes the Italian author and Auschwitz survivor Primo Levi: “I write what I wouldn’t be able to tell anyone.” Saviano, like Levi, embraces his readers within a similar protective halo of intimacy, taking us in his arms to warn us. Other lives and works that Saviano evokes in Shout It Out! are Hypatia, the murdered Alexandrian philosopher, mathematician and astronomer; political theorist Carl Schmitt; trailblazing Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya; Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi; NSA Whistleblower Edward Snowden; 16th century astrology and alchemist Giordano Bruno, burned at the stake by the Inquisition in 1600; Russian poet Anna Akhmatova who chose silence rather than collaboration; Émile Zola; the Brothers Grimm; Martin Luther King; murdered anti-corruption activist Daphne Caruana Galizia; the ancient roman statue of the Callipygian Venus; Terry Bollea (Hulk Hogan); American actress Jean Seberg; Italian filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini; Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels; Rwandan radio host Kantano Habimana; Settimia Spizzichino, one of 50 from the Rome ghetto sent to Auschwitz, and the only survivor; Chinese poet and factory worker Lizhi Xu; Italian-American saint Sister Francesca Saverio Cabrini; Italian architect and London fire victim Gloria Trevisan; George Floyd. Shout It Out dives into world history—and Roberto Saviano’s mind—in a way that constantly surprises.

Palgrave Studies in Classical Liberalism

“While American conservatives and classical liberals have long been preoccupied with defending the American political system against those who wanted to transform it, their defense rested on a deep misunderstanding. The tragedy occurred when “defenders of the Constitution” entered into alliances with groups that rejected the constitution's principles, leading to the anti-democratic takeover of the Republican Party. Gus diZerega’s book is an indispensable guide to the historical origins of political polarization in the United States.”

This short, concise book offers a theoretically grounded reinterpretation of American political development, integrating political theory, political economy, and intellectual history. Drawing on James Madison and the Scottish Enlightenment, and informed by Austrian economic thought, it argues that the U.S. Constitution is best understood as a spontaneous order: an emergent framework coordinating diverse actors through procedural rules, overlapping majorities, and checks and balances rather than fixed policy outcomes.Set against this perspective, the book examines how European-derived frameworks – particularly classical liberal interpretations associated with Lord Acton – misread the American system and influenced modern conservatism. It distinguishes between constitutional conservatism rooted in rule of law and a Southern conservatism grounded in hierarchy, tracing their convergence through late twentieth-century political realignment. In extending Hayekian analysis to democratic institutions, the book contributes to debates in political economy, American political development, and complex adaptive systems. Gus diZerega

He received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and is the author of Persuasion, Power, and Polity, an early application of Hayekian theory to democratic systems. A founder and editorial board member of Cosmos + Taxis, his research spans political theory, environmental politics, institutional analysis, and metaphysics.

Democracy as a Spontaneous Order

Wittgensteiniana

These essays, written by Brazilian scholars, apply Wittgensteinian tools to ethics, law, education, psychology, aesthetics, hermeneutics, and the history of science. Multiple possibilities pop up in the chapters by way of uses of Wittgenstein: bringing in an illuminating concept (aspect-perception, family resemblance, intermediary links, hinge propositions, panoramic representation and so on) to a foreign debate or sub-area, so as to address an impasse of thought; passing theories through the anti-dogmatic test of grammatical therapy by showing where theories or concepts are brought to bear in too far-fetched thoughts they were not designed to express or clarify; etc. A testimony to the vitality and reach of Wittgenstein’s philosophy.

Mon Cher Amour

Do Chinese and English speakers think differently? While the strong version of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis — the idea that language determines thought — has long been discredited, this book offers a more nuanced perspective on whether linguistic differences between Chinese and English influence how native speakers perceive the world. Bringing together a multidisciplinary collection of papers from fields such as philosophy, translation studies, language acquisition, and psycholinguistics, this volume explores the complex interplay between language and thought in these two languages. It will serve as a valuable reference for sinologists, linguists, and scholars of Asian studies alike.

Evolutionary Economics and Social Complexity Science

This is the first book to present a new approach of institutional design as an evolutionary applied policy based on coherent conceptualization and methodology, and to study the actuality and implications of diversifying real/virtual community currencies. In contrast to a de facto standard theory, an institutional ecosystem can be composed of various institutions that continue to coexist with changing relative frequencies. In this view, diversified monetary institutions with local rules are feasible and realistic. Community currencies are worldwide attempts to redress such problems as financial instability, chronic stagnation, and decline of communities caused by globalization of the economy. Considering those alternative movements as a new type of policy, "evolutionist institutional design", this book clarifies the feasibility and significance of community currencies in the current era of globalization. The book also provides a better understanding than mainstream approaches of such platform institutions as money that determine fundamental means of cognition and action of interacting agents. Money is a symbolically generalized communication medium in the mesodomain that mediates between socioeconomic performance and patterns in the macrodomain and motives and cognitive frameworks in the microdomain. Conventional national systems of money and finance are platform institutions that determine basic replicators for a capitalistic market economy to evolve. In contrast, community currencies conveying both economic and social/cultural values are distinct platform institutions that are expected to endogenously change such basic replicators in outer and inner institutions for agents to a noncapitalistic market economy. These currencies are considered target institutions for "media design" in the framework of evolutionist institutional design.
