The little-known success story of four working class girls who formed 'the female Beatles' in 1960s Liverpool

'In Liverpool everybody wanted to be in a band. On every street corner and in every cellar there were young fellas practising with guitars. But it was rare to see any girls on the new Merseybeat scene. It was inevitable that we would find each other . . .' In the early '60s, four friends from Liverpool formed a band. But this is not the 'fab four' story we know. Mary, Sylvia, Valerie and Pamela - also known as The Liverbirds - were one of the world's first all-female rock'n'roll bands. At an early gig, backstage at the Cavern Club, a young John Lennon told them that 'girls don't play guitars'. But they took that as a challenge. Despite the early scepticism, they won over tough crowds, toured stadiums, recorded two hit albums, and played with the Kinks, Rolling Stones and Chuck Berry - all in the space of just five years. Now, the two surviving members of the band tell their incredible story in full for the first time - capturing a lost era of liberation and rock'n'roll, as they thrived in the vibrant Merseybeat music scene and formed a friendship that has endured through the decades. * 'A ton of Liverpudlian grit, good sense and wry humour.' - Daily Mail 'Warm and vivid . . . Stories like this one are vital to keep.' - Telegraph 'A powerful story, one that dances to its own distinctive beat.' - The Sunday Times

Our life in Britain's first female rock 'n' roll band

A collection of eye-opening natural experiments, showing how economists uncover cause-and-effect relationships and reveal insights about our world. Does having a daughter change how a congressperson votes? How did a nineteenth-century doctor help discover germs? Is it better to go first or second in a penalty shootout? Why don’t diplomats pay their parking tickets? Do leaders really matter? These are all questions economists ask. Some of these questions are serious, others less consequential. But all are interesting—and can be answered by way of the natural experiment. A natural experiment is an event in the real world that neatly divides people into a treatment group and a control group—and it is one of the greatest tools in the economist’s toolkit. In Daughters, Diplomats, and Death, Patrick Gourley discusses why and how economists have leveraged this powerful method to answer questions that were long thought unanswerable. In the vein of Freakonomics, Nudge, and The Tipping Point, the book takes the reader on a lively and engaging tour of some of the most fascinating natural experiments, explaining how they work, how they help social scientists answer questions, and what conclusions they reached. The experiments illuminate a wide range of timely issues in health, education, reproductive issues, and the environment, lending rich and much-needed nuance to the complex debates that shape today’s headlines.

A rollicking, eye-opening history of the Star Wars franchise: an unrivaled force in popular culture that changed the way Hollywood makes movies—and that is now imperiled by many of the industry forces it set in motion From the premiere of the first film in 1977, the Star Wars franchise not only captured the imaginations of billions of people—and billions of dollars of revenue—but also rewrote the rules of the entertainment industry. Game-changing special effects, must-have collectibles, and the richness of George Lucas’s ever-expanding narrative gave rise to a new Hollywood model in which the boundary between screen and life collapsed. Star Wars wasn’t just a movie, after all: it was an alternate universe, a moral code, a way of life. Over the last half-century, Wall Street Journal reporter Erich Schwartzel explains, the Star Wars franchise has relied on an anti-establishment ethos, the savvy of executives, and the devotion of moviegoers to become a new American myth. But since its fateful acquisition by Disney in 2012, Star Wars has become a cautionary tale of Hollywood excess, and its present status as a corporate holding bears little resemblance to its origins. Drawing on scores of insider interviews and surveying fifty years of American culture and commerce, Schwartzel delivers fresh perspective on the Star Wars story, bringing to life the scrappy creative spirit of Lucasfilm’s early days; the box-office frenzy that rang in Hollywood’s blockbuster era and gave rise to a new industry playbook; and the scores of fans whose lives have been shaped by this singular force. A panoramic narrative of dreams, obsession, and power, Rebels and Empires is the untold history of Hollywood’s most storied epic.

Revealing the people behind the Rothschild name, The Rothschilds explores the lives and legacy of one of the best-known and most impactful families in modern history. The Rothschild name has long been synonymous with wealth and privilege, but as Jews the family has also been dogged by prejudice and hatred. Antisemitism followed them from their earliest beginnings in the oppressive Jewish ghetto of Frankfurt, where Jews were not allowed out after nightfall, to the lofty summits of high finance, art, and culture. However, behind the myths, the glamor, and the conspiracy theories are a group of relatives whose individualism, personalities and occasional eccentricities have been obscured by their shared surname.

In The Rothschilds, Harry Freedman delves into their lives on a historical tour, marked by an unfailing attention to the influence of individual family members on world events.

We travel from the genesis of the Rothschild international banking empire to the impact of individual Rothschilds in multiple fields over the past 250 years.

Spanning war, politics and the industrial revolution, art, architecture and interior design, zoology, smuggling, and counter-terrorism and the ongoing struggle against entrenched anti-Jewish bigotry in different historical eras and places.

The Rothschilds reveals a truly new story of a very old family, making a great contribution both to history and our understanding of a dynasty that has shaped our world.

The Untold Family Story

The Rothschilds

This open access book offersa cultural history of lawsuits that traces the development of French performance rights from la Belle Époque, throughthe Roaring Twenties, and into thePost-War period. It does so by analysing the ways in which performers, composers, and playwrights took to French courtrooms, sought attention in mass media, and participated in political debates to claim their rights to create and control musical and theatrical performance. In 19th-century France, composers and playwrights organised in member-run societies that successfully used authors' rights legislation to curb the power of theatre managers. By the turn of the 20th century, these so-called collective management organisations had transformed French cultural industries by building out structures of royalty collection and improving litigation practices. From the café-concert culture in 19th-century Montmartre and the rise of modern celebrity culture, to mass media and radio entertainment, the book traces precedent-setting litigation that defined who creates and controls performance. The book challenges previous narratives that centre the individualisation of authors in the expansion of the international copyright regime while neglecting performers. Instead, it reveals the ways in which the personality and individuality of performers have played a constitutive role in discourses about genius, technology, and legal categories. Performance as Intellectual Property is for anyone interested in the emergence of modern European cultural industries and the relationships between intellectual property systems, creativity, and art. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com Open access was funded by the European Research Council.

Performance as Intellectual Property

"Love is two minutes and fifty-two seconds of squelching noises" (Johnny Rotten, Rolling Stone)

The theory is that sex sells. And sex sells music.

The connections between music and sexuality are long-standing, 'rock'n'roll' itself being a slang term for sex, and there are many ways in which artists have explored sex and love through the medium of sound. Some of the records discussed in this book are experiments in expressing sexual desire through musical forms, mixing musical and sexual sounds. Others use sex purely as a marketing device or as 'whimsical entertainment' (sexualised images on LP covers, for example). Other records examine the politics of sexuality and/or offer a subversive take on the relationship between popular music and eroticism.

As an accessible form of entertainment, the LP was part of the 'democratization' of sexuality and erotica, something that was previously only available to the upper classes collecting erotic and pornographic materials on their many travels around the globe. Recorded music extended the reach of sexual content from literature, with books such as An ABZ of Love by Inge and Sten Hegeler (1963) or Alex Comfort's The Joy of Sex (1972), into the audio-visual realm.

The 'stirrings of the soul', the animation of the spiritual and the emotional, is what 'heavy conscious creation' is about and the sexual aspect of this is significant and profound.

Canadian electroacoustic composer Robert Normandeau once claimed that 'music, unlike other contemporary art forms, has hardly dealt with eroticism as a genre'. This book tries to fill in the gaps that this statement implies.

And the "two minutes and fifty-two seconds of squelching noises" that Johnny Rotten spoke about are here, sometimes literally, in musical form.
