This book provides a multi-jurisdictional analysis of the role of law in accelerating the development of floating offshore wind energy. With ongoing technological advancements in the context of the energy transition, floating offshore wind represents a significant advancement in the global transition towards sustainable energy. Debates around the inherent ecological tensions raised by fixed-bottom offshore wind turbines, as well as the value of deeper offshore wind exploration, are considered alongside unanswered questions on the complexity of the marine environment and its governance in relation to the deployment of floating offshore wind energy. Other questions focus on marine spatial planning, licensing and permitting procedures, and the safety of installing and maintaining complex offshore energy infrastructure. Although these issues partially coincide with those related to traditional bottom-fixed installation, the book provides an opportunity to test the extent to which traditional legal and regulatory strategies may or may not be suited to the fast-growing deployment of floating offshore wind energy. Written by experts across multiple jurisdictions where floating projects are being developed, the book unlocks new thinking on regulatory modelling and design at a time when floating wind is expected to resolve the complexity of the Energy Quadrilemma.

Multilateralism has been increasingly accepted as the modus operandi in world politics, and in global environmental politics in particular. International environmental law in the form of multilateral environmental agreements has over the last four decades emerged as the preferred avenue to address inter-state environmental issues that either cross state boundaries, materialize beyond national jurisdictions or are of genuinely global nature such as climate change.This book analyses the possibilities as well as the limitations of environmental treaty making between states. The book considers the structures and processes that lead to the successful adoption of the Paris Agreement – and contrasting them with other attempts that failed in bringing states together under a legally-binding solution. Christina Voigt explores the whole "life-cycle" of multilateral environmental agreements, from diplomatic exchanges, to treaty negotiations, to analyses of the treaty text, non-compliance mechanisms and finally to recourse to courts. It also emphasises the strong impact of the sovereign powers of emerging economies such as China and Brazil on the shaping of international environmental regimes.

By exploring the historic development of marriage laws and changing relationship norms in England, Qatar and Australia; the legal treatment of religious-only unions in light of the family law regime in each country, and the impact of non-recognition, this book reveals the complexities of the law reform needed to tackle these issues. This examination of the differing outcomes for couples who live in England/Wales where cohabitants have no legal rights, Australia where cohabitants do benefit from some legal protections, and Qatar, a Muslim majority state with a modern family law regime which ordinarily recognises religious marriages provides a broad canvas for exploring this issue in depth. The book looks at this very complex issue from a range of perspectives including autonomy, cultural transitions and legal pluralism. It examines the issue of religious-only marriages in order to convey the complex and interwoven narrative which signifies how multifaceted law reform must be in order to adequately respond to these transitioning relationship norms in any given jurisdiction. Of course, relationship norms are not static and they continue to evolve. In light of changing norms and practices, the theoretical framework for this book focuses on the concept of 'liminality' or transition, which is being witnessed in the processes and formalities by which Muslims are entering their marriages.

This monograph provides an in-depth analysis of Article 7 of the Rome II Regulation, and its interplay with other EU PIL provisions, from a litigation perspective. Simultaneously, due to its critical approach, it provides a blueprint for the European legislator to implement future legislative amendments in the said rules, in order to suppress their limitations. Overall, the book reaches conclusions on:
*whether it is effective at all, from the standpoint of environmental protection, to intervene in environmental matters though PIL means; 
*whether PIL interventions in environmental matters enhance and spread the EU’s environmental law policy, both inside and outside the EU

This book examines the interaction between Islam and private international law in Asia. The analysis distinguishes between Muslim-majority and non-Muslim jurisdictions. Among the former, a further distinction can be drawn between Muslim-majority jurisdictions where Islamic law continues to exert a strong influence on both substantive and procedural law (including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Brunei), and those where the law has been largely secularized (such as Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan). Among the latter, non-Muslim jurisdictions can likewise be divided into two groups: those with a significant Muslim minority, often granted a certain degree of judicial or legal autonomy (such as India, the Philippines, and Thailand); and those where Muslims constitute only a small minority and where no special legal or judicial framework exists (including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and China). In Muslim-majority jurisdictions, the main question concerns the influence of Islamic law on the private international law treatment of cross-border cases. In non-Muslim jurisdictions, the main question concerns the acceptance of foreign law based on or influenced by Islamic law or judgments rendered in application of such laws. The chapters put the question of the interrelation between Islam and private international law in its broader theoretical context, examining the differences and similarities between the various approaches and proposing suggestions that bridge the gap between sometimes opposing approaches. The book sheds light on the multifaceted interrelation between Islam and private international law in Asia from both a theoretical and practical angle. It offers a unique perspective in which cultural and religious diversity meets private international law. This invaluable book provides judges, practitioners, decision-makers, and scholars with a practical guide and an indispensable reference to understanding this complex issue within the Asian context.

The book explores how human rights law, often framed as universal and abstract, responds to deeply personal questions of identity, belonging, and emotional impact. Based on a systematic study of over 3,300 judgments, the book shows how the European Court of Human Rights has increasingly made identity central to its reasoning - particularly in cases involving sexuality, ethnicity, and family life. In these areas, the Court acknowledges how state actions shape emotions such as fear, humiliation, and dignity. Yet, in other domains - migration, religion, professional life - the Court avoids emotional engagement, leading to troubling inconsistencies. The book argues that when emotions are excluded from legal reasoning, individuals are reduced to formal entities, stripped of depth and interiority. Combining doctrinal analysis with insights from social theory and psychology, the book presents a new framework for understanding how emotions and identity interact with law. Despite the centrality of international human rights law to the global rights framework, its role in human rights education (HRE) - particularly in schools and community settings - has been sidelined, dismissed as either too technical or too politically problematic. This book challenges that marginalisation head-on. It examines how legal knowledge is framed, valued, or rejected in the theory and practice of HRE, engaging critically with the prevailing trends in the field: one that gestures toward law but avoids depth, and another that disavows law entirely in favour of culturally embedded alternatives. Through a close reading of scholarship and policy, combined with insights from educational theory and socio-legal studies, the book argues for law's role as a form of "powerful knowledge" in HRE. It contends that access to and understanding of legal norms and mechanisms are not only essential for meaningful rights education but are themselves enabling rights in practice.
