This book is novel in that it provides insights into the effects of information provision on people's perceptions and behavioral changes during the pandemic, and provides empirical evidence on its mechanisms and policy implications from different perspectives. It compares the different characteristics and effectiveness of information sources from the government, the news media, professionals in the field (health care workers), non-professional ordinary people, and the close environment, including family, friends, and colleagues. The consumer externality is the key concept in the analyses, as it identifies the effects of one's own consumption on the actions of others in constrained situations such as pandemics. Data from surveys conducted in Japan, the United States, and Germany suggest some implications for policymaking during a pandemic. One is related to differences in the characteristics of information. For example, information from experts in the field is perceived differently than information from other sources. Similarly, information from authorized organizations such as government and the news media remains critical in an emergency. Another relates to behavioral changes caused by the provision of information. Clearly, the effects of information on behavior change depend on the characteristics of the activity being addressed. We examine the effects on out-of-home and in-home activities during the pandemic, both of which focus on leisure activities, and show that the effects of information on each activity are quite different. Overall, this book provides empirical evidence for the importance of information dissemination policies that work with appropriate information providers and take into account country-specific attitudes to information.

The first section focuses on the historical colonial legacy of global health and the foundations needed for equitable partnerships, introducing key themes explored throughout the book. These include concepts related to decolonization, ethics, gender, systems approaches and transdisciplinary science, Planetary Health, One Health, team science, and communication. The book's second section draws on case studies of global health partnerships to understand where we are today in global health. Authors share their experiences responding to global health threats, including disease outbreaks, refugee health, stigma, and sexually transmitted diseases, and post-disaster community recovery. The book's third section articulates a new vision for global health partnerships to co-create a more peaceful, equitable, and loving world. This book constructs a model of informed consent to surgery utilising empirical ethics and socio-legal analysis to bring together medical ethics, medical professional regulation, and medical law. The work includes an original socio-legal analysis of the models of informed consent to surgery present in court judgments and fitness to practise decisions. It constructs such a model using the empirical ethics methodology of reflexive balancing to both develop and challenge its construction. This unified model enables patients to make autonomous choices about surgery by encouraging healthcare professionals to draw upon the patient's subjective perspective, as well as objective viewpoints, when determining what information needs to be given to patients about treatment. It incorporates a focus on the importance of patients understanding that information and having the opportunity to reflect upon it. The outcome is a model of informed consent to surgery that speaks to medical ethics, medical professional regulation, and medical law, giving equivalent weight to the insights offered by each. The book will be an invaluable resource for students, academics and researchers working in the area of Medical Law and Ethics and Bioethics.
