This book revisits after about close to 20 years the East Asian Welfare Model when looked at from an ideal-typical perspective. Ideal-typical welfare regimes do not change, in general, quickly, they are stable, due to the higher level of observation applied (using a high-flying bird’s or satellite’s perspective).Twenty years, however, are a long time also in welfare state system development. A great deal of mega events and mega trends have impacted on social policy all over the world in these last two decades. These include the Covid 19 pandemic, gender movements, rock-bottom low overall fertility (in the post-industrial setting), global production shifts (a.k.a. globalization of industrial production), and last but not least technological revolution brought upon by super-digitalization and artificial intelligence applications, and information society in general, and with it technological unemployment of a large parts of a whole new generation having become unemployable while they have been highly trained at college and university levels.It is high time to look at East Asia welfare state systems up close again, and the right theoretical and methodological lens, i.e. applying ideal-typical theory and methodology, to an otherwise not graspable fully dynamic and intertwined phenomenon: continued welfare state growth amidst crises and change.

We live a world in which the number of prisons is growing and experiences of incarceration are increasingly widespread. Carceral Worlds offers a necessary and timely contribution to understanding these carceral realities of the globalized present. The book asks how the carceral has become so central in life, how it manifests in different geographical locations and, finally, what the likely consequences are of living in such a carceral world. Carceral Worlds focuses on carceral practices, experiences and imaginaries that reach far beyond traditional spaces of confinement. It shows the lasting effects of colonial carceral heritage, the influence of prison systems on city management, and the entrapping nature of digital infrastructures. It also discusses new urbanized forms of migrant detention, the relation between prisons and homelessness, the use of carceral metaphors in the everyday, and the carceral implications of the uneven distribution of climate risk across the globe. This book is novel in that it provides insights into the effects of information provision on people's perceptions and behavioral changes during the pandemic, and provides empirical evidence on its mechanisms and policy implications from different perspectives. It compares the different characteristics and effectiveness of information sources from the government, the news media, professionals in the field (health care workers), non-professional ordinary people, and the close environment, including family, friends, and colleagues. The consumer externality is the key concept in the analyses, as it identifies the effects of one's own consumption on the actions of others in constrained situations such as pandemics. Data from surveys conducted in Japan, the United States, and Germany suggest some implications for policymaking during a pandemic. One is related to differences in the characteristics of information. For example, information from experts in the field is perceived differently than information from other sources. Similarly, information from authorized organizations such as government and the news media remains critical in an emergency. Another relates to behavioral changes caused by the provision of information. Clearly, the effects of information on behavior change depend on the characteristics of the activity being addressed. We examine the effects on out-of-home and in-home activities during the pandemic, both of which focus on leisure activities, and show that the effects of information on each activity are quite different. Overall, this book provides empirical evidence for the importance of information dissemination policies that work with appropriate information providers and take into account country-specific attitudes to information.

This book highlights the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on Bangladesh's marginalised communities and the pivotal role of Social Safety Net Programs (SSNPs) in alleviating poverty and food insecurity of low-income families.&nbsp;Emphasising the need for inclusive decision-making and the involvement of citizen perspectives to ensure no one is left behind to align with the Sustainable Development Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities, the authors stress the importance of engaging local government institutions to coordinate timely and effective assistance in times of crises. Advocating for increased funding and improved targeting mechanisms, the authors identify the critical need for real-time data to inform policy responses effectively. Strategies to address chronic poverty are outlined, emphasizing the multifaceted approach needed for effective poverty reduction. The mixed-methods research sheds light on the potential of SSNPs to not only address immediate food security concerns but also wider social equity of those in need. Lower-middle-income countries, including Bangladesh, face complex challenges adapting to economic changes, urbanization, and societal shifts, necessitating robust social protection policies. While Bangladesh has progressed in reducing poverty, this book acknowledges challenges and regional disparities&nbsp;across four unions and different districts, which were selected based on specific criteria to ensure diversity.&nbsp;This book is of interest to scholars and students of social policy, public policy, sociology and public administration, particularly in the South Asian context.&nbsp;
Jannatul Ferdous is Associate Professor at the Department of Public Administration, Comilla University, Bangladesh. Maruf Ahmad&nbsp;is a rural development practitioner and a Ph.D. fellow at the School of Public Policy and Administration at Xi'an Jiaotong University, China.
