Critical Criminological Perspectives

This book explores narratives and practices around gender and criminal justice, with a focus on women in Latin America. The chapters are written by academics, policy-making institutions, women with lived experience and activist actors in Latin America. They provide a distinctive analysis of gender and criminal justice in the region, along with the tensions between victimization and agency in women’s paths of criminalization. This book looks at women’s resistance and responses to States’ processes of gender stereotyping and punishment. Ultimately, it showcases women’s collective capacity to shape the security agenda.
Corina Giacomello is Professor of Sociology of Law at the Institute of Judicial Studies of the Autonomous University of Chiapas, Mexico. She is an academic and international consultant with expertise in gender studies, children’s rights, criminal justice and prison systems and drug policies. She has 20 years of experience in advocacy-oriented research and development of legal, judicial and public policy proposals at the national and international level.

While corruption is conventionally characterized as a socially harmful and ethically wrong phenomenon, and family is typically viewed as fundamental to social cohesion, this book argues that these constructs frequently intersect in real-life situations. Kinship ties often function not solely as sources of emotional solidarity but also as channels facilitating illicit transactions and resource misappropriation. From minor nepotism to large-scale state capture, family relationships frequently shape how corruption is organized, justified, and sustained. Drawing on interdisciplinary theories and case material, this book develops a much-needed theory of family corruption. By challenging the conventional dichotomy that segregates family from formal institutions, the analysis reveals how deeply family relations are embedded in everyday social orders, superseding universalistic norms and overriding rational bureaucratic considerations.  is a Professor at the School of Public Affairs of San Diego State University, USA. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He consults with international organizations such as the United Nations, the European Commission, U4 Anti-Corruption Resource Centre, the Basel Institute on Governance and Transparency International. He was a Fulbright US Scholar to Hungary for the 2024–25 academic year.

This book integrates diversified disciplines, research approaches, and methodologies of area studies, regional economic development, and regional science. With its huge population, China has accomplished rapid economic growth since the 1990s, although the significant income gap among regions and individuals has become a serious problem for its society. China's accession to the WTO in 2001 has had various influences on the entire food system, from agriculture to consumers, through the food manufacturing and distribution industries. The changes in the Chinese food system are considered to have also affected the agriculture and food industries in Asian countries where economic interdependence has been promoted in past decades. The author argues these issues based on interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary methods and approaches and has successfully derived empirical and theoretical results that are rich in policy implications.
