Corporate purpose is a fixture of boardrooms, annual reports, executives' talk, and employer branding. Yet the average effect of corporate purpose on financial performance is zero. Some firms turn purpose into concrete practices and stronger performance. Others do not live by purpose standards and create incoherent demands, poor coordination, and weaker performance. How to be part of the former group is a strategic question. The CLARITY framework developed in this book offers an answer grounded in evidence. Purpose statements, however eloquently crafted, remain stagnant without the leadership practices that embed them in employees' daily experiences.  Raluca Csernatoni is a Research Fellow at Carnegie Europe, where she works on the nexus between European defence and emerging technologies. She is also Guest Professor at the Centre for Security, Diplomacy and Strategy (CSDS), Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium, and Visiting Faculty in the Department of International Relations, Central European University, Austria.

With its huge population, China has accomplished rapid economic growth since the 1990s, although the significant income gap among regions and individuals has become a serious problem for its society. China's accession to the WTO in 2001 has had various influences on the entire food system, from agriculture to consumers, through the food manufacturing and distribution industries. The changes in the Chinese food system are considered to have also affected the agriculture and food industries in Asian countries where economic interdependence has been promoted in past decades.
