Even before its launch, economists questioned whether the Euro Area had what it takes to become an optimal currency area. The onset of the crisis in 2010 confirmed challenges in its construction that many had partly predicted. But has the Euro Area changed over time, and what key drivers are necessary to strengthen it in the future?&nbsp;
 This is the third of three volumes that use optimal currency area theory and applied econometric techniques to provide a compact analysis of the Euro Area, its evolution and future perspectives. This volume is dedicated to a criterion often seen as critical for an optimal currency area: a risk-sharing mechanism. Did the Euro Area’s stabilization mechanisms work as intended? In this timely book, the authors discuss the extent to which the Euro Area has developed fiscal transfers, insurance schemes, and financial markets that allow its members to share macroeconomic risks and smooth asymmetric shocks. The book is of interest to a wide range of researchers in financial economics, macroeconomics and economic policy.&nbsp;


 Johannes Dreyer
 is Associate Professor at Roskilde University, Denmark. His fields of research include financial economics, macroeconomics, and the study of Optimal Currency Areas.
 Peter Schmid
 is Professor at FOM University of Applied Sciences, Germany and contract professor at the Free University of Bolzano, Italy. His fields of research include general business administration, economics, finance and entrepreneurship.

Master's Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Economics - Monetary theory and policy, grade: 97/110, University of Rome "Tor Vergata" (School of Economics), course: European economy and business law, language: English, abstract: The thesis discusses the roles of the major international currencies in the global field. Especially, it focuses on the currency competition of the euro and the dollar. The dollar has kept its dominance for several decades and will probably remain the hegemon international currency in the nearest future. 

In its twenty years of existence, the euro has not yet proved itself as a worldwide currency. This fact is investigated using a variety of metrics, including its position as an anchor or reference in exchange rate adjustments, as trade-invoicing currency, as an international reserve currency, and for its role in financial transactions. Since 1999, the euro has always been in a much smaller position than the dollar for any of these metrics. The thesis investigates and critically discusses the causes of this lack of performance.

Switzerland as a leading international financial center has faced a number of challenges in recent years: the global financial crisis of 2007-09; the near-collapse of UBS, the country's largest bank, in 2008; disputes over Swiss banking secrecy; the 2010 Euro crisis; and, most recently, the emergency takeover of Credit Suisse by its rival UBS. In 
 Spillover,
 Peter Püntener, a freelance photographer and former employee of the Swiss National Bank, attempts to visually capture these far-reaching events.
 At the core of the book are portraits of around 90 decision-makers who were closely involved in overcoming these crises. Plötzlich standen Fragen im Raum, die man bis dahin für undenkbar hielt: Was passiert, wenn eine Bank pleitegeht? Wer schützt unsere Ersparnisse? Und wie kann ein Kollaps des Finanzsystems verhindert werden? 

Diese fundierte Analyse gibt spannende Einblicke in die Mechanismen der Finanzmarktstabilisierung bei Bankeninsolvenzen – verständlich, aktuell und kritisch. Anhand des Finanzmarktstabilisierungsgesetzes (FMStG) und des Sonderfonds Finanzmarktstabilisierung (SoFFin) wird gezeigt, wie der Staat in Krisensituationen eingreift, um die Zahlungsfähigkeit systemrelevanter Banken zu sichern.
