 is Associate Professor at Roskilde University, Denmark. His fields of research include financial economics, macroeconomics, and the study of Optimal Currency Areas.
 Peter Schmid
 is Professor at FOM University of Applied Sciences, Germany and contract professor at the Free University of Bolzano, Italy. His fields of research include general business administration, economics, finance and entrepreneurship.

L'euro n'est pas une monnaie spontanée mais l'aboutissement d'un rapport de forces nationales découlant de la réunification allemande. Si les premières années de cette monnaie, introduite en 1999, furent baignées dans un contexte économique favorable, la crise bancaire de 2008 et la banqueroute grecque en dévoilèrent les failles. L'euro n'est plus porté par un élan politique commun parce que la différence de croissance entre les pays européens s'accroît et que la prospérité n'est plus partagée. L'euro n'a pas apporté suffisamment d'intégration politique et de croissance. Cette monnaie pourrait susciter son propre sabordage si sa gestion n'est pas repensée dans le sens d'une plus grande solidarité financière et d'une compréhension socio-politique accrue des différents États-membres. Plus que jamais, la perpétuation de l'euro repose sur le fragile équilibre de l'axe franco-allemand. Sans sursaut moral et une action politique décisive, un fait politique pourrait conduire à une sécession monétaire ou, pire, déclarer un véritable schisme qui mettrait fin à une des plus stupéfiantes expériences de l'histoire des monnaies.
