This book is an accessible introduction to philosophical logic's phenomenological approach, elucidating its principles and demonstrating its utility in uncovering the origins and development of logic. The analytical approach to philosophical logic which dominated early discourse posited that logic serves as a universal tool capable of articulating any consistent thought, representative of an era where formalism and rigor were prized as the ultimate pathways to clarity and precision. In recent times, however, the landscape of foundational mathematics has shifted with the emergence of univalent foundations. They, unlike symbolic logic and set theory, embrace the uncountable, infinite diversity of mathematical objects, something that was inconceivable within the confines of logical positivism.The phenomenological approach dispenses with the need for comprehensive logical calculi, focusing instead on smaller, modular units of logic referred to as logemes. The implications of this approach extend beyond historical analysis, holding significant potential for applications in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and more. By offering an expansive arsenal of homotopic tools, the phenomenological approach equips researchers and practitioners with innovative techniques for tackling complex problems in all fields.

One of the more contentious debates to emerge into scientific prominence has been whether life is prevalent in the cosmos and its level of complexity. &nbsp;Of the many factors that shape this debate, one of the most overlooked yet crucial rests on the different roles that temporal organization plays in biotic systems.Although the origin and evolution of life is dependent on the arrow of time, rooted in entropy, the traditional understanding of time’s arrow is insufficient to account for the diverse types of temporal processes characteristic of living organisms; most notably, the diverse functions played by past-present-future in shaping biotic systems. Far from a minor problem, the author argues that the forms of temporal (bio-tensed) organization utilized by biotic systems shape not only the emergence and prevalence of all life, but also the scientific theories we use to explain the universe along with the moral concepts that inform our responsibilities to extraterrestrial life (should we find any).&nbsp; Drawing from philosophy, the life sciences and astrobiology, this book argues that understanding the centrality of temporality for living systems provides crucial insights that help answer the epistemological, ethical and cosmological challenges that face astrobiology’s search for the origins and prevalence of life in the universe. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Investigating the Conceptual, Ethical and Cosmological Implications of Astrobiology

The Temporal Organization of Life

There may exist something like the most unbearable of all philosophical thoughts. It is the thought of contingency and universality converging, intersecting, and being one and the same thing, approached from two different perspectives. Hardly anything is as unsettling as the insight into the absolute contingency of the emergence of universals, and the correlative realization that the only true universality is one of the contingency of everything. The goal of this book is to think this unbearable thought through to the end and face up to its most binding and disconcerting consequences. The history of science is full of theoretical unifications of two previously mutually exclusive concepts or two opposite realms (natural and unnatural motion in Galilei, terrestrial and celestial physics in Newton, man and animal in Darwin, electricity and magnetism in Maxwell, mass and energy, space and time, acceleration and gravity in Einstein, etc.). This book is based on the conjecture that what philosophy is lacking is a similar unification of the concepts of "contingency" and "universality." The book will thereby try to accomplish an operation that is implicit in the philosophy of Slavoj Zizek. In doing so, it will provide new answers to questions on the nature of contingency, necessity, predictability of the future, the validity of the laws of nature, the role of singularity in relation to universality, chaos and order, reality and truth. These answers will differ starkly from the ones advocated by contemporary philosophers such as Badiou, Meillassoux, some other speculative realists, and some analytical philosophers of science.
