A national bestseller, Hothouse is a “wonderful” (New York Review of Books), “valuable” (The New Yorker), cultural history, “a ripping read about the eminent publishing house Farrar, Straus & Giroux” (The Boston Globe). Farrar, Straus & Giroux is arguably the most influential publishing house of the modern era. Home to an unrivaled twenty-five Nobel Prize winners and generation-defining authors like Tom Wolfe, Joan Didion, Philip Roth, and Jonathan Franzen, it’s a cultural institution whose importance approaches that of The New York Times. But FSG is no ivory tower—and its untold story is as engrossing as many of the great novels it has published. Boris Kachka reveals the era and the city that built FSG through the stories of two men: founder-owner Roger Straus, the black sheep of his German-Jewish family, and the reticent, closeted editor Robert Giroux, who rose from working-class New Jersey to discover the novelists and poets who helped define American culture. Giroux became one of T.S. Eliot’s best friends and played caretaker to manic-depressive geniuses like Robert Lowell, John Berryman, and Jack Kerouac. Straus, the showman, made Susan Sontag a star, kept Edmund Wilson out of prison, and turned Isaac Bashevis Singer into a Nobelist. After giving us a fresh perspective on the postwar authors we thought we knew, Kachka exposes how elite publishing works today. He gets inside the editorial meetings where writers’ fates are decided; he captures the adrenaline rush of bidding wars for top talent; and he lifts the lid on the high-stakes pursuit of that rarest commodity, public attention—including a fly-on-the-wall account of the confrontation between Oprah Winfrey and Jonathan Franzen. Hothouse is the product of five years of research and nearly 200 interviews by a veteran New York magazine writer. It shares “a thrilling look at the heyday of the publishing industry” (Entertainment Weekly) and illuminates the vital intellectual center of the American Century.

The Art of Survival and the Survival of Art at America's Most Celebrated Publishing House, Farrar, Straus and Giroux

Hothouse

Primarily based on Masaji Marumoto's oral histories, this book is an account of Marumoto's life and career-from the time he was a child until he was well into his retirement years in the mid-1980s. One of Hawaii's most distinguished Nisei, Marumoto was the first person of Asian ancestry to graduate from Harvard Law School, the first Japanese American president of the Hawaii Bar Association, and the first Japanese American to serve on the Hawaii Supreme Court. This volume includes portions of a diary Marumoto kept as a fourteen-year-old schoolboy and letters to his wife and son during his World War II military service. It is an intimate portrait of a remarkable individual--a figure of major consequence in the story of modern Hawaii.

Robert E. Howard (1906-1936) is most widely known today as the creator of Conan the Cimmerian, more popularly referred to as Conan the Barbarian. However, he also wrote across a wide array of genres for the pulp magazines of the 1920s and 1930s, including Westerns, sports stories (boxing), adventures, supernatural horror, and even humor. Howard also created many other popular characters such as King Kull, Bran Mak Morn, Solomon Kane, Steve Costigan, and Breckenridge Elkins. More importantly, he created two specific subgenres of fiction: sword and sorcery (sometimes referred to as heroic fantasy) and weird Westerns. Born and raised in Texas, Robert E. Howard began his writing career after his family settled in the small Central Texas town of Cross Plains. His first professional sale came from the pulp magazine Weird Tales in 1925, and over the next eleven years he wrote hundreds of stories and an equal number of poems. With this prolific body of stories, he was among the most lauded pulp authors of that era. It has been said, and rightly so, that the secret to his success was that there was a bit of Howard in every one of his characters, and because Howard was a Texan, even Conan shows elements of the Texan in his persona. Robert E. Howard: The Life and Times of a Texas Author details the many trials and tribulations he faced as he became--and remained--a full-time writer while dealing with an aging father and caring for a mother who was dying of tuberculosis. The book both chronicles his personal life and demonstrates how the one driving force in Robert E. Howard's life--forming the foundation for all of his characters and stories--was his personal pursuit of freedom. He lived for his freedom, he wrote as a means to attain that freedom, and, while it may sound strange, he also died tragically by his own hand in that very same pursuit at the young age of 30.

Arnold, Liebling – In wahnsinniger Eile.

'The Doctrine of Laissez Faire' reveals the early roots of his skepticism about political economy, on which his later works of humour fed. In it, Leacock attempts to demystify the dogmatic opposition to state intervention based on this economic precept.

« Daniel Schreiber

Das Jahr magischen Denkens

In these pages, journalist and writer Pablo-Ignacio de Dalmases offers a courageous investigation that redefines the traditional, even iconic, image we have of Lorca today. This essay, which focuses on his gay identity, breaks new ground in biographical literature, offering us an intimate and daring portrait that takes us by the hand through the most significant--and unknown--aspect of the poet's intense life and emphasizes an aspect that no author had detected until now: the subsequent ideological evolution of his lovers, all of whom--except one, who remained faithful to his socialist and republican identity--ended up, in contrast to the poet's sad fate, firmly identified with Francoism. With its eloquent, entertaining, and well-documented prose, Federico's Fiancés promises to be essential reading not only for the LGBT community, Hispanists, and lovers of literature, but also for those interested in the cultural genealogy of our time. Every page of this work is imbued with respect and admiration for Lorca, delving into the struggles, loves, and passions of a man who lived with a complex and affirming nature, not without contradictions. This book not only celebrates his literary genius, but also humanizes the poet, showing us the many facets of his psychology and opening up lines of reflection on the construction of gay identity in postmodernity.

These memoirs, written during his exile and following the news of the disaster caused by the Nazi regime, are both a recollection of the past and a warning for future generations, The World of Yesterday recalls the golden age of literary Vienna--its seeming permanence, its promise, and its devastating fall. Stefan Zweig draws a vivid and intimate account of his life and travels through Vienna, Paris, Berlin, and London, touching on the very heart of European culture. His passionate, evocative prose paints a stunning portrait of an era that danced brilliantly on the edge of extinction.
