The Geography of the Port of London (1957) deals with the mid-century functions of the port studied in relation to their physical setting and in the light of their historical development. An analysis of the roles of the various dock and wharf systems is followed by a discussion of the present commerce of the port, illustrated by post-war statistics. The multiple background to this activity is also presented, including a discussion of the 1950s physical condition of the River Thames and of the markets and industries associated with the port. Planet Earth has been a familiar concept for a mere fraction of recorded history. Until about the mid-1600s, most humans thought of Earth as immobile, likely either dim or simply invisible from the Moon or anywhere else in the heavens, and not (like the planets) participating in what Galileo called "the dance of the stars." A Universe of Earths: Our Planet and Other Worlds, from Copernicus to NASA retraces the exhilarating story of how all that changed, and how we came to perceive the Earth as a "wandering star." An introductory chapter examines the paradoxical relationship between gender equality and life behind bars for women.&nbsp;This is followed by ten in-depth case-studies on gender and penality policies in a unique line-up of countries in the Global North&nbsp;(Denmark, Poland, Portugal, Canada, the UK and Spain) and the Global South (Zimbabwe, Uruguay and Peru). The comparative conclusion identifies cross-national and cross-sectoral trends and proposes a research agenda for a gendered approach to penality policies. Issues including discrimination against women prisoners and women migrant detainees, gender-bias in prison environments&nbsp;and potential for gender transformation&nbsp;“behind bars” are covered throughout the book.
