This book reframes the question of how Africa industrializes, and is the first to address a key challenge facing African economies today: achieving structural transformation alongside decarbonization, i.e. industrializing and greening simultaneously, rather than sequentially as earlier developers did. 

Drawing on primary fieldwork across five national economies - Ethiopia, Mauritius, Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa - and six strategic sectors, accounting for 40% of Africa's GDP and a third of its population, Arkebe Oqubay advances the concept of Green Productive Transformation, in which structural economic change and decarbonization are treated as mutually constitutive imperatives rather than competing objectives. The comparative evidence demonstrates that where government policy, industrial hubs, and firm capabilities are strategically aligned, productive transformation and green transformation reinforce each other; where they are not, industrial growth follows the path of least environmental resistance, producing carbon lock-in. 

Just transition and energy transition frameworks are designed primarily with industrialized economies in mind. This book challenges the utility of these frameworks for Africa, and instead advances a domestically-driven alternative, grounded in structural transformation theory, green industrial policy, and the political economy of late development. No single green pathway exists for Africa: the evidence presented here reveals conditional pathways shaped by national context, sectoral configuration, and policy choice. A green, productive Africa is not an inevitable outcome of global technological change, but it is genuinely within reach, and the first step is getting the analysis right.

A unified framework for understanding monetary policy, including recent unprecedented interventions by central banks Over the past two decades, monetary policy has been deployed in unprecedented ways, as central banks attempted to mitigate the adverse consequences of the 2007-2008 financial crisis, the COVID-19 global lockdown, and recent inflationary surges. In Monetary Economics and Policy, Pierpaolo Benigno offers a new way to understand the potency and effectiveness of monetary policy, presenting a unified modeling framework to analyze policy challenges posed by both paper and digital currency systems. He investigates current theoretical and policy controversies, drawing connections with historical themes in monetary economics. Benigno examines how central banks control the value of their currency amid competition from cryptocurrencies and private money-like securities; discusses the desirability of inflation targeting for macroeconomic stabilization; and explores theoretical grounds for the unconventional monetary policies seen in the recent period of zero nominal interest rates, including forward guidance, quantitative and credit easing, and helicopter money. He accompanies his analysis with an innovative visual representation of the New Keynesian model and inflation-targeting policies. Benigno's novel framework also allows the study of monetary policy normalization through quantitative tightening toward what has become the "new normal." He discusses the optimal provision of liquidity and the different roles of the government and financial intermediaries. Finally, he recounts historical controversies regarding the inflation-unemployment trade-off to understand the 2020s inflationary surge and delves into the causes and dynamics of hyperinflations, tracing them to the subtle, ambiguous linkages between monetary and fiscal policy and weak balance-sheet conditions for the central bank.

A revelatory financial history showing that today's massive Islamic finance industry was preceded by decades of Muslim interest banking across Eurasia and Africa. Since the 1970s, the now multi-trillion-dollar Islamic finance industry has offered interest-free banking to Muslims around the world. Its proponents maintain that Islamic law strictly forbids all forms of financial interest. Many academic accounts echo this perspective, assuming that before the 1970s, Muslims either avoided interest banking out of deep-seated religious hostility or practiced it in defiance of religious stricture. Yet as Michael O'Sullivan argues, these narratives overlook rich traditions of Muslim interest banking that preceded Islamic finance. In the early twentieth century, the first modern Muslim-owned interest banks appeared across Eurasia and Africa-from India to the Ottoman Empire, Tsarist Russia, Habsburg Bosnia, Tunisia, Egypt, Iran, Palestine, and Indonesia. Viewed as a solution to Muslim economic distress, these banks intensified debates among Muslims about both the Islamic legal tradition and acceptable economic practices. While interest banks raised suspicions among some Islamic legal scholars, others explicitly defended their legality and encouraged Muslim entrepreneurs. Ultimately, O'Sullivan shows that the Islamic finance industry's commitment to interest-free banking was a product of contingency as much as principle. It was a combination of bank failures, high rates of indebtedness, and changing religious interpretations that eventually led many Muslims to reject interest banking and demand a replacement more commensurate with an "Islamic economy." Even so, the religious debates inaugurated by the first Muslim interest banks persist to this day.
