Every person contains a degree of otherness, as identity is formed by social belonging. However, group solidarity can lead as well to exclusion, stigmatization, and even violence against those deemed different. They face trauma and contempt, suffering in silence that is engendered by shame or enforced by dominant communities and narratives, while the silence surrounding victimization further deepens the harm and isolation experienced by those affected. This volume brings together analyses examining past and present forms of marginalization related to various groups of excluded people. The essays it contains call for the recognition of those often ignored by society and attempt to give a voice to the unheared.

Safar: Finding Home, History, and Culture through Punjabi Food in the American West follows the journey of South Asian refugees, immigrants, and their children-in particular, Sikhs, Jats, and Muslims-who moved to the southwestern states of America over centuries as farmers, truck drivers, restaurant owners, and dhaba/diner stall cooks. An expedition in search of the asli-or real Punjabi food-Madhushree Ghosh explores how their food traveled from pre-partition British India to now, while weaving in her own immigrant journey as a graduate student to America in 1993, her quest to find home through the food of her Bengali refugee parents, and the physical journey she embarked on to visit the Punjabi communities in California, Arizona, and New Mexico. Focusing on four Punjabi women, each a part of a different immigration wave of South Asia to the American West, Ghosh highlights the food and recipes they brought with them that connect them to their pasts. Safar shares stories of displacement, discrimination, community, and hope, while shedding light on immigrant journeys and the true meaning of home, comfort food, and what constitutes a "true Punjabi" meal. Featuring essential recipes, this is a poignant reflection on what it means to find home and identity through food and culture as an immigrant to the United States.

Routledge Studies in Criminal Justice, Borders and Citizenship

This book examines the implementation of immigration policy in Mexico&nbsp;through an ethnographic and relational lens, focusing on the subjectivities of state officials. Based on three years of qualitative research (2017-2019) conducted at the Siglo XXI Migration Station in Tapachula, Chiapas-Mexico's southern border with Guatemala-the study explores how agents of the National Institute of Migration (INM) experience, interpret, and enact state power at the local level. The analysis foregrounds the subjective dimensions of bureaucratic work-emotions, fears, desires, and forms of reasoning-and their direct impact on migrants' experiences of detention and deprivation of liberty.

Central to the book is an examination of the institutional processes of subjection that produce subjects in immigration detention. Approaching immigration policy as a political, cultural, and social practice embedded in everyday institutional life, the study shows how state institutions are sustained not only through legal frameworks and administrative procedures, but also through relational processes of power that shape subjectivities. In this framework, both state agents and migrants are constituted as subjects through power, albeit in profoundly unequal ways. Drawing on a biopolitical perspective, the book analyses how the regulation and control of bodies are enacted within an institution that, while formally situated within administrative law, operates in practice through policing and carceral logics. The findings reveal that immigration agents themselves are shaped by institutional processes of subordination and depoliticisation, which in turn contribute to the routine reproduction of practices of humiliation, contempt, and domination toward detained migrants within an asymmetric configuration of power.

This book will be a valuable resource for criminologists, sociologists, legal scholars and anthropologists engaged with questions of immigration and state power. It will also be useful to policymakers and practitioners working with migration governance and border control.
