In den Nachkriegsjahren errichtete die DDR-Führung mit großem Aufwand repräsentative Sportstätten in Ost-Berlin, die heute fast komplett verschwunden sind. Anhand des Walter-Ulbricht-Stadions, des Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportparks oder der Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle erzählt Ulrich Pfeil von der Enttrümmerung und dem Wiederaufbau der geteilten Stadt. Die Baugeschichten vermitteln nicht nur neue Einblicke in die Ost-Berliner Stadtplanung und Architektur, sondern illustrieren zugleich, wie die SED ihre Herrschaft in den frühen Jahren der DDR durchsetzte. Gerade in Berlin gehörte der Sportstättenbau zum Systemwettstreit im Kalten Krieg. Die SED versuchte, die Überlegenheit des Sozialismus zu demonstrieren - nicht zuletzt über den Stadionbau.

The Geography of the Port of London (1957) deals with the mid-century functions of the port studied in relation to their physical setting and in the light of their historical development. An analysis of the roles of the various dock and wharf systems is followed by a discussion of the present commerce of the port, illustrated by post-war statistics. The multiple background to this activity is also presented, including a discussion of the 1950s physical condition of the River Thames and of the markets and industries associated with the port. It presents a comprehensive picture of this at-the-time greatest British seaport, considered with reference to certain principles of economic geography.

in 1988, Birth Control in Germany deals in detail with the dissemination and acceptance of ideas of birth control from 1871 -1933 and shows the variety of methods that were in use-condoms, pessaries, diaphragms, caps and most notably abortion. In common with many western societies, Germany experienced a notable decline in the birth rate as it entered into the 20th century. Demographers differ in their explanation for such changes in the birth rate. Some argue that fluctuating birth rates reflect society's efforts to match population and economy, while others argue that modern low levels can only be the result of radical innovations in popular behavior. The author argues that the latter can be shown to be the case in the German instance. He further says that attitudes quite similar to those found in liberal circles today were widespread among ordinary men and women in Germany, in contrast to, for example, the pro natalist ideologies dominant in France in the same period. This despite the regional, class and religious differentials which influence the German picture.The book amounts to an important study of the sexual politics of pre-Nazi Germany, and study in modernization of a traditional society. This is an important historical work for scholars and researchers of German history, women's studies, health &amp; reproductive history, European history, and gender studies.

Originally published in 1964, at a time of much public unease regarding redundancy, this book contains the results of a comprehensive survey, inspired by a suggestion of the then Minister of Labour that the mass redundancies in the Midlands motor industry of 1956 merited a full-scale investigation. The findings are based on an analysis of a 1 in 10 sample of men made redundant in Birmingham in the period. Among the matters examined are the difficulties encountered in obtaining work after redundancy; the range of geographical mobility and the role played by the then employment exchanges in securing new employment. Other chapters focus on the financial hardship caused; the resort to savings and the impact of the redundancies on the gender balance in the workforce. The impact of the dismissals on trade union affiliation is also considered, as are the men's verdicts on the 'fairness' of the selection procedure adopted.
