For many pastors, it is difficult to stay theologically informed after their studies. Many students of theology and religious education may be able to repeat individual pieces of knowledge, but they find it difficult to draw broad lines. And many church members are interested in biblical studies, but they give in because of the mass of specialist literature. Creation conjures emotion and thereby shapes how we think and act. People fear snakes and enclosed spaces, and delight in well-watered landscapes. Language about nature evokes these emotional meanings and their consequences. We may construe nature as a mother to enhance love of creation and motivate care for our common home.
