Palgrave Studies in the History of Finance

This volume explores the economic and financial contexts behind a period of large-scale bankruptcies in Europe across the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. With a particular focus on Spanish and Italian case studies, contributions analyse numerous aspects of failure and insolvency during this time.Despite growing contemporary interest in economic crises—particularly in the aftermath of 2008—the history of bankruptcy practices and the responsibilities of financial actors within the context of early globalisation remains largely underexplored. This volume responds to that need, offering a detailed, archivally grounded and theoretically robust investigation into parallels that exist in early modern Europe. Drawing out comparative analyses between modern and early modern financial crises, the book illuminates how early modern states developed systems of guarantees in tandem with the growth of mercantile capitalism, and covers questions including public debt management, financial transparency, the accountability of economic actors, and the relationship between political and economic power.  is Professor of Economic History at the University of Milan and holds a PhD in Economic and Social History from the Bocconi University. He is Honorary Professor at The Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction, University College London, and Associate to the National Research Council of Italy, Institute of History of Mediterranean Europe (ISEM). He is also currently a temporary lecturer in Economics on the Strategic Management MsC at LUISS, Rome.
 Ángel Alloza Aparicio 
 is Senior Researcher at the Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC), where he holds the position of Científico Titular at the Institute of History, within the Center for Humanities and Social Sciences (Centro de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales, CCHS) in Madrid.

Bankruptcies, Defaults and Insolvency Proceedings in Spain and Italy, 16th – 17th Centuries

Throughout the history of the Western world, Jews have suffered various forms of exclusion, stigmatization, and discrimination that have forced them always to be aware of their very particular situation. The Jews became a community under siege and, as Shlomo Sand argues, Judaism was shaped by the hostile gaze of Christian civilization. While the forms of hostility endured by the Jews have varied over the centuries, it is impossible to understand twentieth-century anti-Judaism, or Jewish identity itself, without taking account of the sediments of mental hatred, fuelled by religious belief, which have survived the passage of time. While anti-semitism is the term commonly used today, Sand prefers 'Judeophobia', which predates the appearance of anti-semitismand is more precise. Looking back over the centuries, he seeks to identify some of the stages in the age-old, incandescent hatred of the Jews, and tries to understand what remains today of this trenchant hostility. He also questions whether Zionism, born as a distressed response to modern Judeophobia, has ended up mirroring it. To what extent has Zionism inherited the ideological foundations that have always been characteristic of the persecutors of the Jews? This book explores the impact of the bombing of civilians during the Spanish Civil War. The Civil War has long been recognized as bringing together the political, social and other elements key to understanding the 1930s in Europe and later, the Second World War. It was a conflict involving fascism, communism, anarchism and other movements of the day, and led to a dictatorship that kept Spain separate from the rest of Europe until the late 1970s. Recent scholarship on the Civil War has focused on the deaths of 200,000 civilians in the conflict, largely as a result of executions, a number that equals and perhaps surpasses the number of those killed in battle. This effectively recasts the conflict as one that is better thought of as a systematic attack against civilians, rather than as a traditional military conflict. What is missing from this new understanding of the Civil War is an analysis of the impact of bombing. The infamous bombing of civilians in the Basque town of Guernica is widely known but, in reality, the bombardment of civilians was a regular feature of the conflict, including in both Madrid and Barcelona. This book therefore provides a study of the war against civilians from the air, civilian responses to these attacks, and the contemporary memory of this part of the Civil War.

Primarily providing household furniture and upholstery goods and services at the beginning of the century, by mid-century upholders provided stylish and fashionable residential interior furnishings, funeral undertaking, and a secondary market for used household goods. Upholders were at the forefront of the development of Britain’s material culture, and were important contributors to London’s economic and social fabric. Providing context to the social and business lives of upholders, the author surveys key themes including apprenticeship, livery companies, empire, material culture, consumerism, taste and fashion, advertising, and credit. The book also explores how upholders came to dominate the funeral undertaking business, and integrated brokering, appraising, and auctioneering into their businesses.

Adapting to the economic changes and interior furnishing trends that took place in the first half of the eighteenth century, many upholders expanded their business lines. While consumer demand increased for household goods, so too did the widespread use of personal credit, which ultimately led to an increase in upholder bankruptcies after 1760. Through two case studies of financially successful upholders, the book sheds light on diverse topics such as the East India Company, banking, royal household tradesmen, and military contracting, to create an intricate understanding of their experiences. When did whiteness begin? Was its rise inevitable? In this powerful history, John Broich traces the emergence, evolution and contradictions of white supremacy, from its roots in the British empire, to the racial politics of the present. Focussing on the English-speaking world, he examines how ideas of whiteness connect to the history of slavery, Enlightenment thought, European colonialism, Social Darwinism and eugenics, fascism and capitalism. Far from being the natural order of things, Broich demonstrates that white supremacy is a brittle concept. For centuries, it has been constantly shifting, rebranding, and justifying itself in the face of resistance. When Operation Banner was launched in 1969 civil war threatened to break out in Northern Ireland and spread over the Irish Sea. Uncivil War reveals the full story of how the British army acted to save Great Britain from disaster during the most violent phase of the Troubles but, in so doing, condemned the people of Northern Ireland to protracted, grinding conflict. Huw Bennett shows how the army's ambivalent response to loyalist violence undermined the prospects for peace and heightened Catholic distrust in the state. British strategy consistently underestimated community defence as a reason for people joining or supporting the IRA whilst senior commanders allowed the army to turn in on itself, hardening soldiers to the suffering of ordinary people. By 1975 military strategists considered the conflict unresolvable: the army could not convince Catholics or Protestants that it was there to protect them and settled instead for an unending war.
