Taking a global perspective to the computer age reveals how work, gender, and emotions have shaped its history. Since the 1960s, workplaces have been key sites for the introduction of computers, transforming organizations, future imaginaries, and perceptions of self and others. Yet, contrary to dominant narratives, this process was neither smooth nor universally welcomed. Workers and organizations responded in diverse ways, forming distinct emotional communities amid profound change. Across eight chapters, case studies from Europe, Asia, and Latin America offer new insights into the global computer age and invite reflection on our present relationship with technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and ongoing workplace transformations.

Workplaces are key sites where computers were first introduced, transforming organizations, senses of self, and visions of the future. In contrast to narratives today, this process was not always smooth or welcome. Workers and organizations responded in different ways to the changes, forming their own emotional communities and senses of connection in light of sweeping changes. The contributors to this volume explore the global history of the computer age from the perspectives of work, gender, and emotions. The eight case studies span Europe, Asia, and Latin America to shed light on the global computer age in the last few decades as well as trends we are witnessing today, such as artificial intelligence.

Since the 2003 UNESCO Convention, cultural heritage policies have promoted diversity and grassroots participation. Deborah Sielert explores how these global discourses do and do not unfold in three small towns in northern Germany, where Portuguese, Dutch, and East Frisian minorities have shaped the cultural sphere since the 1990s - despite the absence of official heritage frameworks. The Politics and Economics of a Self-Serving Attachment

The Two Irelands and the Diaspora

This book considers Section 21 of the Divorce and Matrimonial Causes Act 1857 and its significant impact on previously invisible married women in the 19th century.

Tens of thousands of women used this little-known section of the Act to apply for orders from local magistrates' courts to reclaim their rights of testation, inheritance, property ownership, and (dependent on local franchise qualifications) ability to vote. By examining the orders that were made and considering the women who applied for them, the book challenges the mistaken belief that Victorian England and Wales were nations of married, cohabiting couples. 

The detailed statistical analysis and rich case studies presented here provide a totally new perspective on the legal status and experiences of married women in England and Wales. Although many thousands of orders were granted between 1858 and 1900, their details remain unknown and unexamined, primarily because census records did not consistently record dissolved marriages and there is no central index of applications made.

Using sources including court records, parliamentary papers, newspaper reports, census returns, probate records and trade directories, this book reconstructs the successful - and unsuccessful - experiences of women applying to magistrates' courts and the Court for Divorce and Matrimonial Causes to protect their assets across regions and decades.
