Eine Liebe im Schatten deutscher Geschichte - Mit erstmals veröffentlichten Fotos und Dokumenten

Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing through Hawala Money Transfer Operators
investigates the historical, contemporary, and future orientations of the hawala system as it exists at the nexus of national security policy and practice, money laundering, and the financing of terrorism and criminal activity. It examines the emerging connections between criminal and terrorist organisations that aim to exploit this time-honoured system for their unlawful and violent intentions, states, and financial systems. The book offers a thorough examination of a topic that is frequently framed and seen as a major security threat on a local, national, and international scale. Inconsistent state regulations, inadequate international regulatory oversight, and misinformed policy all contribute to the complexity of the issue. It integrates empirical and substantive data and analyses with conceptual approaches to the hawala informal remittance system and its exploitation by criminal and terrorist actors.

This book offers the first comprehensive English-language exploration of juvenicide, a concept that examines the killing of young people as a form of structural violence rather than ordinary homicide. While the term has circulated widely in Latin American scholarship, this volume brings together leading voices to consolidate its theoretical foundations and demonstrate its relevance across diverse contexts. The book is organized into four sections that collectively map the field of juvenicide studies. The first section establishes the conceptual framework and situates juvenicide within contemporary crises affecting youth. The second examines intersectional dimensions, including age, gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity, to show how these factors shape vulnerability to lethal violence. The third section analyzes institutional structures—state power, neoliberal policies, education systems, and criminal apparatus—that enable and normalize juvenicide. The final section turns to resistance, documenting collective struggles that challenge the disposability of young lives in countries such as El Salvador, Argentina, and Colombia.By framing juvenicide as a “total social fact,” the volume illuminates the political, structural, and symbolic forces that render certain youth populations expendable under neoliberal capitalism. Combining empirical research with conceptual innovation, this book provides critical insights for scholars of youth and violence, policymakers, and practitioners. It also serves as a valuable resource for courses on inequality, violence, and social justice in Latin America and beyond.

Street art has undoubtedly established itself as an art form in its own right. This is demonstrated not only by the numerous exhibitions in museums and galleries, but also by the substantial prices achieved at art auctions, particularly for works by the British artist Banksy. As a result, the focus today has increasingly shifted away from the removal of works installed without the consent by the owners of the affected sites, and towards their commercial exploitation. However, it is precisely this commercialisation that conflicts with the very self-understanding of street art. Due to their illegal creation and their installation in public spaces, street art works are particularly vulnerable to interference and exploitation by third parties. Against this background, this thesis examines the extent to which street art artists can rely on copyright law to protect their artworks against unauthorised interference and commercial exploitation.

Eine Untersuchung am Beispiel von Street-Art

Urheberrechtlicher Schutz von aufgedrängter Kunst

This book is a selection of my published essays that address the nature of exploitation and how ideology has legitimated its existence in varied manners over the past five millennia. It includes 10 articles from referred journals and two book chapters. Economic exploitation exists when powerful elites expropriate workers’ surplus, their output beyond that needed for their subsistence. Ideology exists when doctrines legitimating the elites’ privileges successfully convince the exploited that the social system is fair and in everyone’s best interest. Exploitation and ideology did not exist for the first 98% of our species’ history as hunter-gatherers. A high degree of economic and political equality prevailed, precluding economic exploitation of the weaker by the more powerful. Without exploitation, there was no role for ideology to play. The adoption of agriculture 10,000 years ago enabled mild inequality, but unstable legitimating ideology within pre-state chiefdoms. Extreme exploitation and powerful ideologies only emerge with the rise of the state 5,500 years ago, the last 2% of human history. States arose in Eurasia when warrior elites with newly available and expensive metal weapons, military organization, and ideology took possession and control of productive wealth, mostly in the form of land. To survive, all others had to work with the elite’s productive wealth and provide them with their surplus output. They did so as slaves, serfs, indebted peasants, and wage workers. Only in the 2nd half of the 19th century did workers gain adequate political power to retain a portion of their surplus. Industrialization brought workers together in factories and urban slums where they could organize to threaten insurrection. To avoid social disorder or even revolution, workers gained better conditions and most importantly the franchise. Possessing most votes, they could rewrite the social script to greatly lessen inequality. That they failed to do so is testimony to elites’ persuasive laissez-faire ideology that convinced them that it would not be in their interest. Only once, due to the extreme hardship of the Great Depression of the 1930s, was the elite’s ideology sufficiently delegitimated to enable political measures that decreased inequality between the 1930s and 1970s. However, laissez-faire ideology resurged to dominance in the late 1970s, legitimating public policies that have exploded inequality over the past 50 years, proving again the extraordinary persuasive power of the elite’s ideology. This collection of essays provides scholars and others with an understanding of the absurdity of how with our unparalleled material abundance we suffer ever greater insecurity, stress, and pessimism. There is urgency that laissez faire ideology be delegitimated before the policies it justifies lead to the destruction of democracy and our ability to avoid ecological Armageddon. These essays will appeal to academics with interests in the dynamics of exploitation and inequality and to those worried about exploding inequality, the survival of democracy, and preserving our habitat.

Studies in Economic Exploitation and Ideology

Perspectives on Global Affairs

With more than 180 million migrants worldwide, roughly 2.3 percent of the global population, migration is a global phenomenon, characterized by cross-border movements that are strikingly varied. This book discusses the current state of migration as a question of governance rather than crisis, examining contemporary migration movements within the legal, political, and economic structures that shape who may move, and why. The book focuses on Latin America, a region shaped by long histories of mobility, and the immigration policy frameworks of the United States, the European Union, and Latin America and the Caribbeans, tracing how different institutional architectures face similar migratory pressures but obtain markedly different outcomes. Ultimately, the book argues that migration functions as a governance barometer, by introducing the concept of policy elasticity, and exploring the limitations of existing “one-size-fits-all” approaches.

Capitalism, Socialism, and Political Economy,
is a three‑volume examination of the ideological, historical, and economic forces shaping global politics in the early twenty‑first century. Throughout the volumes, Kui‑Wai Li argues that many political dynamics commonly associated with the alt‑right have roots in the geopolitical and institutional arrangements formed at the end of World War II. Integrating political trends into economic analysis, these books provide an analytical framework for understanding how competing ideological systems continue to influence global development, institutional behavior, and public sentiment.
Volume I presents the conceptual groundwork, clarifying the distinctions between capitalism and socialism/communism. It provides particular attention to the historical contexts that shaped these ideologies after 1945. The volume explores their respective strengths, weaknesses, and core principles while emphasizing the need to differentiate “difference” from “inequality” and to draw clear boundaries between economic and political claims.
Building on this foundation, Volume II

applies the framework to contemporary global trends across advanced economies, socialist states, emerging economies, Middle Eastern regions, and newer blocs such as BRICS. Through these cases, the volume analyzes phenomena including Brexit, Trumponomics, cancel culture, and the strategic development models adopted by authoritarian or socialist governments.
Volume III extends the analysis to the politics of fear and sympathy—two themes the author identifies as shaping current debates around climate change, COVID‑19, welfare systems, and unauthorized immigration. It further examines how concepts such as freedom, choice, privacy, trade, and investment function within different political‑economic systems, including the growing influence of AI on perceptions of autonomy and national strategy. The concluding chapters synthesize insights across the series, offering a comprehensive account of how ideological tensions and institutional constraints continue to structure global political economy.Kui-Wai Li
is an independent researcher and economist based in Canada. His research centers on political economy, development, policies, trade, and globalization.

Critical Criminological Perspectives

This edited collection brings together contributors from criminology, health, psychology, drama, business, art, and design, to examine how creative practice can facilitate transformational change within the criminal justice system through making as art, design, drama, storytelling, restorative justice, and related approaches. The volume asks not only what enables people affected by the criminal justice system to lead crime-free lives, but also how creative methods can reshape relationships, identities, institutions, and justice itself. The book charts new territory, understanding justice not only in relation to past harms, but as a generative process that creates the conditions through which better futures can be imagined and realised. The ultimate contribution of the book is a new definition of Creative Justice as a participatory and relational approach to justice in which creative processes of making, dialogue, and co-production bring people, communities, and institutions together to rehabilitate, restore, and regenerate. Working across individual, relational, and systemic levels, it generates recognition, trust, empathy, voice, agency, responsibility, belonging, solidarity, resilience, hope and generativity. Through these qualities, Creative Justice creates the conditions for meaningful and lasting personal, social, and institutional change.Lorraine Gamman PhD is Professor of Design at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, UK, and Director of the Design Against Crime (DAC) Research Lab, which she founded in 1999. DAC explores how art, design and creative engagement processes can reduce crime in partnership. Gamman an authority in applied social design practice, is the co-creator of a range of award-winning anti-crime product interventions, and design benchmarks that have influenced international design.Laura Caulfield PhD is Professor of Psychology and Dean of Research Culture and Postgraduate Research at the University of Wolverhampton, UK. In 2017 she founded the Institute for Community Research and Development. Laura is author of Arts in Criminal Justice and Corrections: International Perspectives on Methods, Journeys, and Challenges (Routledge, 2024) and Criminological Research and Skills for Beginners (2014, 2018, 2025, Routledge).
