What technothrillers—popular films that center advanced technology—can tell us about ourselves, and how they ignite our imagination in technologically supercharged times. In Technothriller, Soraya Murray reveals how popular American films after the 1960s, in which technology assumes a central role—mainly biotech, military, and computational—channel our cultural anxieties, dreams, and convictions about the power and meaning of advanced technology. Along with iconic adaptations from technothriller novels by Tom Clancy and Michael Crichton, such as The Hunt for Red October and The Andromeda Strain, Murray considers Westworld, Rollerball, Demon Seed, WarGames, Ex Machina, Tenet, M3GAN, and The Creator, as well as the Terminator and Mission: Impossible franchises. Through the details of these films and others, she traces deeply embedded popular beliefs about technology and innovation—and then asks what this tells us about the mechanics of power within our technological lives. Exploring how popular culture negotiates political and cultural attitudes toward innovation and difference, her work finds in technothrillers a new way of thinking about the troubled, sometimes catastrophic relationships between humans and their inventions.

In what ways can erotica chart the story of a nation in transition? What can it reveal about the discontinuities-and uncomfortable parallels-between the periods of political and economic turmoil that characterize modern German history? The rapid modernization of the German Empire in 1871 led to large-scale transformations in the cultural, social, and political spheres. Exploring a rich diversity of erotic visual art-from paintings and photographs, to postcard and graphic folios-this volume reveals the impact of these changes on the erotic interests of the nation. Exploring various forms of artistic production, reception, and circulation, Erotic Art in Modern Germany argues for the cultural value of erotica in modern Germany. It presents work by both highly regarded and lesser-known artists and explores themes such as legal cultures and the impact of censorship, sexuality and sexual reform, and changing political frameworks, from imperialism to fascism. 10 chapters explore diverse topics, from philological and ethnographic approaches to erotic art, to scientific developments, gender and sexuality. With its holistic, cross-disciplinary approach-drawing from the fields of anthropology, film theory, Marxism, feminism, and trans- and queer theories-the book complicates simplistic understandings of 'modern' erotica and powerfully underlines its enduring significance as a site of dissent and experimentation.

Erotic Art in Modern Germany

A major reevaluation of a towering figure in twentieth-century art and the relationship of his sculpture to the crisis of nationalism in modern Europe &nbsp; Figures of Crisis examines the neglected decade of artwork that separates the surrealist experiments of Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti (1901–1966) from his iconic postwar sculptures, revealing the connection between a famous artistic crisis in modern art and the crisis of national identity in modern Europe. In 1935, Giacometti abruptly abandoned his early abstract objects and devoted himself to sculpting portrait busts and minuscule figurines, many no larger than a fingernail. Joanna Fiduccia reimagines this fragmentary and inconspicuous body of work as the pivotal phase in his career, which registered the erosion of interwar democratic values and the searching questions this period posed for the future of modern sculpture. &nbsp; Challenging previous explanations of Giacometti’s return to figuration, Fiduccia argues that his figures gave form to the experience of social breakdown during the rise of fascism through their turbulent surfaces, unsettling generality, dramatic reduction of scale, and compulsive repetition. This fresh account, told through the philosophical, political, and aesthetic thought of Giacometti’s time, shows how ideologies of nationalism generated the problems of selfhood at the heart of modernism.

"Jodie Marley’s William Blake’s Mysticism takes us on an exuberant journey of spiritualities, ranging from Dorothy Gott, the prophetic writer he encountered in 1789, to “Fiona Macleod,” the visionary identity of W.B. Yeats’s friend, William Sharp". — David Worrall, Nottingham Trent University, UK.
This book examines William Blake as a ‘mystic’ and the movements and authors that contributed to this definition during and after his lifetime, with a particular focus on his influence on late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Celtic Modernist writers. The author W. B. Yeats was one of the first to present this view of Blake in depth, although his concept of the mystic prioritised the lone male practitioner and the occult. This study argues that the mystic and the esoteric in a community context impacted both Blake’s, and Yeats’, critical and cultural reception. It also offers the first extended literary examination of the Romantic prophet Dorothy Gott’s work alongside Blake’s, and the first analysis of Blake’s influence on Celtic Modernist writers George Russell and Fiona Macleod. This book will be of interest to scholars interested in representations of gender and spirituality in Romantic and Modernist literature and art, and in authors so far neglected in Blake studies.
Jodie Marley is a researcher and writer whose work focuses on Romanticism, reception, mysticism, and gender. Her research bridges the Romantic and Modernist periods, with a particular focus on Irish Modernism. She is a 2025 visiting research fellow at the University of Glasgow’s Archives and Special Collections and won a British Association for Romantic Studies (BARS) Stephen Copley Award to fund her research in December 2024. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Nottingham in 2023.
She has forthcoming book chapters in The Routledge Companion to William Blake&nbsp;(ed. Freeman) and&nbsp;Seán O’Casey in Context&nbsp;(ed. Moran). She has previously been published in&nbsp;the Bulletin of the John Rylands Library,&nbsp;VALA, and&nbsp;Good Horoscope. Two of her talks for the Global Blake initiative are publicly available. In 2019 she co-curated the Romantic Facts and Fantasies exhibition at Lakeside Arts, Nottingham, and helped organise the 2019 BARS conference.

The first monographic study of American artist Alison Knowles, a significant yet overlooked cofounder of the Fluxus movement. Alison Knowles stands out as the sole female artist among the founders of Fluxus, yet she has remained an enigmatic, underrecognized figure in the history of art.
