Was stellen wir uns vor, wenn wir von Aufklärung sprechen, und welche konkreten Vorstellungsbilder verbinden wir damit? Aufklärung ist ein historisches Phänomen und zugleich eine bis heute wirkmächtige soziale Imagination. Um ihre Attraktivität zu verstehen, richtet dieser Band den Blick auf die kollektiv geteilten Vorstellungsbilder der Aufklärung. Er untersucht, mit welchen Mitteln sie erzeugt wurden und werden, wie sie kulturelle Orientierung stiften und wie sie gemeinsame Handlungs- und Denkräume eröffnen. Die Beiträge aus Geschichts-, Kultur- und Literaturwissenschaft, Kunstgeschichte und Soziologie beziehen sich sowohl auf die Formationsphase der Aufklärung im 18. Jahrhundert als auch auf ausgewählte Stationen ihrer Wirkungsgeschichte. Aufklärung als soziale Imagination zu analysieren, ermöglicht neue Erkenntnisse über ihre Entstehung und ihren Durchsetzungserfolg, aber auch über die ästhetischen Qualitäten und Dynamiken der beteiligten Bilder und Texte, Medien und Praktiken.

Was stellen wir uns vor, wenn wir von Aufklärung sprechen, und welche konkreten Vorstellungsbilder verbinden wir damit? Aufklärung ist ein historisches Phänomen und zugleich eine bis heute wirkmächtige soziale Imagination. While the art of saving time reaches unprecedented heights through the introduction of ever-new technologies of communication and production, it nevertheless feels as though we are running out of time. In all Western societies, time scarcity is increasing and individuals report the impression of having to run faster and faster every year - not in order to get somewhere, but just to stay where they are. In this short book Hartmut Rosa outlines his theory of social acceleration and uses it to analyze the causes and consequences of the temporal processes that characterize modern societies. He shows that modern temporal structures are governed by the logic of an acceleration process that defines the essence of modernity. He also develops a critical theory of social acceleration, arguing that acceleration leads to severe forms of alienation from time and space, from things and actions and from self and others, thus constituting a key obstacle to the realization of a 'good life' in late-modern society.

In Insecurity Politics, Lorenza Antonucci examines the lived, everyday experiences that underpin political disaffection. Countering the reductive portrayals of populist voters as left-behind outsiders, Antonucci focuses on the ordinary, yet increasingly precarious, realities of work and financial instability as key to understanding the surge in populist support in both right- and left-wing politics. Drawing on robust comparative quantitative and qualitative analyses across nine European countries, Insecurity Politics describes the microlevel material and cultural dynamics that drive anti-establishment politics. This book introduces resilience-based concepts and high reliability organization (HRO) principles—adapted from disruption-prone industries—to improve risk management for tail or extreme events in U.S. globally systemically important banks (G-SIBs). HROs thrive in volatile environments by prioritizing adaptability, vigilance, resilience, and safety. Given that both G-SIBs and disruption-prone companies operate in increasingly uncertain and complex settings, there is a shared need for risk management techniques centered on resilience engineering to anticipate and mitigate unexpected extreme events. While G-SIBs are "too big to fail" and provide valuable insights into resilience in high-stakes scenarios, these approaches can benefit banks of all sizes facing similar risks.
The book explores the social world of banking and management, emphasizing the subjective nature of risk as people interpret events differently. Through surveys, interviews, and case studies, the research identifies growing interest in non-predictive risk methods for bank resilience. It recommends supplementing existing quantitative risk models with a transdisciplinary approach focused on non-predictive HRO principles to help banks prevent and mitigate extreme risks. The study finds that current G-SIB risk methods rely heavily on quantitative models, which may create a false sense of security. Additionally, extreme events are increasingly compound and often driven by human behavior. The book targets scholars and professionals seeking advances in resilience engineering within banking.
