This book explores how COVID-19 represents an inflection point for re-thinking and re-making democracy across the English-speaking world in an age where states are facing a future of overlapping crises. Years after the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic started to unfold, have we yet learned the deep lessons essential to maintaining and improving democracy to meet crisis challenges? Produced with the benefit of distance from the most acute period of the pandemic, the book contextualises the COVID-19 crisis as revealing pre-existing vulnerabilities and intensifying challenges of governance, inclusion, and distrust, while also spurring democratic innovation and shifting the parameters for reform. Six national case studies - Australia, Ireland, Canada, Aotearoa New Zealand, UK and USA - reveal the heterogeneity of the Anglosphere as an imagined democratic space. Viewed in the round, pandemic responses ranged from the chaotic to the internationally lauded, although even the latter have featured acute deficiencies in democratic practice, which underscores the need to gather the lessons learned. Yet, in all states, the public and political temptation to simply move on, in an act of communal forgetting and collective return to "normalcy," presents a real risk of failing to prepare for more democratic future crisis responses. This collection takes the long view, approaching its subject from multiple perspectives that examine the heterogeneity of the Anglosphere as an imagined democratic space. Taking a cross-disciplinary approach and bringing together both leading and emerging experts on democracy, constitutionalism, and the rule of law, this book powerfully combines the insights of retrospective analysis with future-focused contemplation of where our democracies are heading.

This book introduces resilience-based concepts and high reliability organization (HRO) principles—adapted from disruption-prone industries—to improve risk management for tail or extreme events in U.S. globally systemically important banks (G-SIBs). HROs thrive in volatile environments by prioritizing adaptability, vigilance, resilience, and safety. Given that both G-SIBs and disruption-prone companies operate in increasingly uncertain and complex settings, there is a shared need for risk management techniques centered on resilience engineering to anticipate and mitigate unexpected extreme events. While G-SIBs are "too big to fail" and provide valuable insights into resilience in high-stakes scenarios, these approaches can benefit banks of all sizes facing similar risks.
The book explores the social world of banking and management, emphasizing the subjective nature of risk as people interpret events differently. Through surveys, interviews, and case studies, the research identifies growing interest in non-predictive risk methods for bank resilience. It recommends supplementing existing quantitative risk models with a transdisciplinary approach focused on non-predictive HRO principles to help banks prevent and mitigate extreme risks. Is it preferable to have a high income or more leisure time? To promote industrialisation and employment in a given territory, or preserve its environmental and landscape integrity? Realistically, each of these dimensions is important in defining individual and collective well-being, in which all these aspects should coexist in a truly balanced and sustainable development path at the local scale. An approach measuring well-being, and possibly, sustainable development, based solely on the economic sphere, is reductive and misleading as a policy-relevant tool. The complexity of the argument at stake requires refined approaches and more elaborate measures - than simple gross domestic product (GDP). It is possible to conceive truly sustainable economic policies relying only on instruments and indicators involving multiple dimensions, in turn promoting quality of life. Moreover, applications of this perspective at regional and local levels are important, as territories are the collecting agents guaranteeing and promoting processes of supra-individual utility, for example, environment quality or social cohesion. These institutions are responsible for the important role of outlining specific development policies for communities and the sustainable paths to be undertaken, with the aim of increasing the effective well-being of individuals. Following these assumptions, and on the basis of recent developments in the academic literature, this edited book debates extensively on these topics, offering an updated theoretical ground and pragmatic examples delineating an operational and coordinated evaluation of well-being that integrates the economic dimension with the environmental and social ones, thus assuring a more complete interpretation of complex (local) development paths.
