Historical Knowledge on Wikipedia

How has the digital turn shaped the practices of film historical research and teaching? While computational approaches have been used by film historians since the 1960s and 1970s, the arrival and use of digital tools and methods in recent decades has fundamentally changed the ways we search, analyze, interpret, present, and so think and write about film history - from digital archival and curatorial practices, data-driven search, and analysis of film historical collections to the visualization and dissemination of film historical materials online. While film historians have increasingly embraced the new possibilities brought by digital technologies, their practical, epistemological, and methodological implications need further exploration. What opportunities does the digitization of film historical sources provide for film historians? What new questions can be raised by using digital methods? What new perspectives emerge from analyzing, interpreting, and visualizing film historical data at the levels of both "close" and "distant" - or "scalable" - reading and viewing? By focusing on the concepts, tools, and practices of digital film historiography, this edited volume aims to contribute to a better understanding and critical reflection on the changes and continuities of doing film history in the digital age.

This groundbreaking study examines the unlikely merger of two Japanese cultural phenomena, an 11th-century aristocratic text and contemporary manga comics. It explores the ways in which the manga versions of The Tale of Genji use gender, sexuality, and desire to challenge perceptions of reading and readership, morality and ethics, and what is translatable from one culture to another. Lynne K. Miyake shows that, through their girls, ladies, Boy Love, boys and young men, and informational comics remediations of the tale, the manga Genjis visually, narratively, and affectively rework male and female gazes; Miyake reveals how they gently inject humor, eroticize, gender flip, queer, and simultaneously re-inscribe and challenge heteronormative gender norms. The first full-length study of Genji manga, this book analyses these adaptations within manga studies and the historical and cultural moments that fashioned and sustained them. It also interrogates the circumscribed, in-group aristocratic society and the consumer and production practices of the Heian society that come full circle in the manga versions. The Tale of Genji through Contemporary Manga utilizes western queer, feminist, sexuality and gender theory and Japanese cultural practices to illuminate the ways in which the Genji tale redeploys itself. Yet it also provides much needed context and explanation regarding the charges of appropriation of prepubescent (fe)male and gay bodies and the utilization of (sexual) violence mounted against Genji manga-and manga and anime in general once they went global.

This book reorients our understanding of the history of modern male homosexuality by focusing on Europe's 'internal Other': Italy. Spanning from the tail-end of the Grand Tour to the mid-fascist years, it argues that Italy was a time/space in which competing epistemologies of homosexuality confronted one another – precisely what characterizes 'modern' male same-sex love and attraction. Turning our understanding of the history of male homosexuality on its head, it proposes that Italy was not primitive, pre-modern, or under-developed but modern in a way that Europe and the US were not. It also highlights the frequently overlooked role working-class men and boys played in the so-called invention of modern male homosexuality. The new scientific epistemologies of sexuality; a pan-European Hellenic revival; a tradition of fostering male same-sex intimacies that cut across age, class, and nationality; Italy's lack of anti-sodomy legislation and specific place in the capitalist world system, including the late entry of bourgeois women into its public sphere; changing understandings of sexuality and gender that resulted from industrialization -- all combined to produce a same-sex sex tourism industry that juxtaposed competing understandings of male same-sex love. These epistemologies were inflected in complex and contradictory ways by issues of gender, class, ethnicity, locality, age and race, such differences not simply 'intersecting' but being constituted alongside one another – particularly given Italy’s ambiguous racial identity, somewhere 'between' the binaries of black and white. Adopting a queer Marxist approach that focuses on both capitalism's long durée and its combined and uneven development, rather than center a history of modern homosexuality on the white bourgeois men who visited Italy, this book seeks to glimpse the lives of their Italian lovers. To this end, it adopts an interdisciplinary approach that examines a wide archive including not only works of literature by privileged white bourgeois traveling gentlemen but also Italian sexology; same-sex sex scandals and their treatment in the Italian press; anthropological work on Italian homosexualities; travel diaries; and police records.John Champagne is Professor Emeritus at Penn State Erie, the Behrend College, USA.

Joss Marsh's stirring book traces the international phenomenon that is cinema's Dickens obsession, from its origins in Dickens's celebrity, through Dickens impact on the pioneers, first masters, and later innovators of the cinema and his enmeshment in the complex of technologies and cultural formations that made up the world of late-Victorian fantasy - from the photograph to the magic lantern, from celebrity to time travel.

As Joss Marsh observes in her stirring book on Dickens and cinema, Dickens was the first mass-mediated photographic celebrity of the modern era, more intimately "familiar" than any person in Britain besides the royal family. Marsh's cinematic geography of Dickensland transports the reader from Dickens's experiences with the early-Victorian portraitist's camera to Sunset Boulevard, Billy Wilder's remake of Great Expectations as a satire on the vampiric celebrity "celluloid self"; from actor-manager Martin-Harvey's 1899 manufacture of the "cast-iron" Victorian stage play to Dirk Bogarde's 1958 inheritance of the sacrificial gay role of Sydney Carton; from Charley Dickens Jnr.'s attempt to cash in on his father's knowledge of London to the history of production design as a medium of historical tourism and virtual experience; from Dickens's "impersonation" of Fagin, anti-Semitic and inherently theatrical, to the transformations of "the Jew" by Chaplin and David Lean and his musical apotheosis as magician and Pied Piper; from Dickens's 1868 return, in his last public reading, to the murder of Nancy to the contemporary slasher movie; and finally from the time travel enabled by the magic lantern's "dissolving views" through the role of Dickens's lantern-inspired Christmas tales of the 1840s in the lantern's development of pre-cinematic visual storytelling.
