Interkulturelle Germanistik

Brief Encounters

A dazzling, daring tale of poets at the end of the world, Distant Star is Roberto Bolano's miniature dystopian masterpieceAlberto Ruiz-Tagle was once the quiet, unpromising member of Chile's young poetry scene. But the military coup of 1973 sees Alberto reborn as Chile's leading celebrity poet, Carlos Wieder, known for his daring sky poems, penned in smoke high above the cities. Where did this talent suddenly spring from? And, how is it connected to the disappearance of the beautiful Garmendia twins? Told from across the years in exile in Europe, the narrator's attempts to trace the fate of his old circle will lead him to one last confrontation with the brutality of their generation.BRIEF ENCOUNTERS: classic novellas and captivating stories, to be read in a single sitting or savoured over days

Distant Star

'A new Lucy Diamond book is one of the happiest highlights of my calendar' - Katie Fforde It's a beautiful day in Manchester and four friends are meeting for a birthday lunch. But then they witness a shocking accident just metres away, which acts as a catalyst for each of them. For Laura, it's a wake-up call to heed the ticking of her biological clock. Sensible Jo finds herself throwing caution to the wind in a new relationship. Eve, who has been trying to ignore the worrying lump in her breast, feels helpless and out of control. And happy-go-lucky India is drawn to one of the victims of the accident, causing long-buried secrets to rise to the surface. On a Beautiful Day is a novel about the startling and unexpected turns life can take. It's about luck - good and bad - and about finding bravery and resilience when your world is in turmoil. Above all, it's about friendship, togetherness and hope. Praise for Lucy Diamond: 'You can feel the warmth lifting from the pages as you turn them' - Milly Johnson 'A hugely satisfying read' - Heat 'Warm, witty and wise' - Daily Mail

Asia in Times of Crisis

'Deeply moving and necessary'ANNE ENRIGHT'A must-read'iPAPER'Remarkable ... affecting'NEW STATESMAN'Original and heart-warming' LINDSEY HILSUMFrom the Orwell Prize-winning author of My Fourth Time, We Drownedcomes a powerful account of human resilience, capturing our capacity for love and connection against all odds.We live in an era defined by crisis - whether it be war and displacement, or climate collapse and rapidly widening inequality. Acclaimed international correspondent Sally Hayden has spent her career covering some of the darkest moments of our time, and yet even in the face of unimaginable adversity, she's witnessed the love and care of everyday people.Hayden introduces us to a couple separated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and a mother in northeast Nigeria who risks everything to save her daughter from forced marriage to Boko Haram militants. We meet a group of Syrian women searching tirelessly for their missing spouses and children, while launching a call for justice, and learn about letters from the bereaved to the dead, still being written over a decade after the tsunami that devastated Japan. In stories that crisscross the globe, from Uganda to Lebanon, Rwanda to Iraq, Hayden asks us: what if news was recounted through the actions people take for those they love? Would it become harder to dehumanise those who seem different to us? This is Also a Love Story dares us to recognise how love can be found in even the most difficult of times, and to question what might be needed to create a better world.'Moving ... Hayden is an excellent journalist'SUNDAY TIMES'Beautiful, painful and in many ways restorative ... I recommend it highly'MARIAN KEYES, author of My Favourite Mistake'Remarkable ... the perfect antidote to our times'CHRISTINA LAMB, author Our Bodies, Their Battlefields'A beautiful meditation on love ... [Hayden] is our most vital journalist'IRISH TIMES'Shows us that in the midst of war, around the most acute suffering, there is also tremendous heroism' NATHAN THRALL, author of A Day in the Life of Abed Salama'A reporter of the first order ... 'An indelible and enthralling work of moral witness' PATRICK RADDEN KEEFE 'These questions of memory and impunity are forever timely' FINANCIAL TIMES 'An extraordinary achievement . . . I read with open mouth and thumping heart' STEPHEN FRYThe house at 38 Londres Street in Santiago, Chile, is home to the legacies of two men whose personal stories span continents, nationalities and decades of atrocity: Augusto Pinochet, President of Chile, and Walther Rauff, a Nazi SS officer responsible for the use of gas vans. In 38 Londres Street, Philippe Sands blends personal memoir, historical detective work and gripping courtroom drama to probe a secret double story of mass murder, one that reveals a shocking link between the horrors of the 1940s with those of our own times. In so doing, he reveals an untold and astonishing tale of the legacy of unchecked criminality and the road to impunity.'Combines the tone of the thriller with an astute and dramatic account of a most complex and fascinating legal case. A brilliant and important book' COLM TOIBIN

Something is unfolding in the distance at the edge of the forest - something sinister that is watching them back. The adults don't seem to notice that the youngest of the group has disappeared. As the cousins embark on a quest through their grandmother's sprawling estate, buried family secrets come to light and long-awaited plans are set in motion. Will they lose themselves while trying to find her? Idle Grounds is a chilling, evocative and darkly comic debut about childhood, legacy, and the burdens and privileges we carry with us.

Idle Grounds
