From the Hubble-, James Webb-, and Other Large Telescopes to Gravitational Wave Detectors

The Navier-Stokes equations - modeling the motion of viscous, incompressible Newtonian fluids - have been capturing the attention of an increasing number of mathematicians over the years and has now become one of the most intensely studied subjects in applied analysis. This project is dedicated to a complete and updated mathematical analysis of fundamental topics related to these equations. Every subject will be analyzed using different approaches. The main ideas behind them as well as their differences will also be emphasized and discussed. The book aims at being self-contained, however, it will also be supported by a vast bibliography for further reading.

Navier-Stokes Equations: A Mathematical Analysis

Dieses Buch bildet den 2. Band einer Trilogie zur Geschichte der Raumfahrt. Er befasst sich mit den bemannten Raumfahrtprogrammen der USA und der Sowjetunion (bis 1991) bzw. Russlands (ab 1992), wobei in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren noch der Ost-West-Konflikt dominierte, während man in den 1990er Jahren zu einer Ost-West-Kooperation überging. Die beiden Schwerpunkte der Darstellung sind einerseits die Raumstationen, d. h. die sowjetisch-russischen Saljut und Mir sowie das amerikanische Konkurrenzprojekt Freedom. Den zweiten Schwerpunkt bilden die Raumfähren, d. h. das amerikanische Space-Shuttle und der sowjetische Buran. Den Höhepunkt der internationalen Zusammenarbeit bildete das gemeinsame Programm Shuttle-Mir. In diesem Zusammenhang werden auch die westeuropäischen Beiträge Spacelab und Euromir ausführlich behandelt.&nbsp; Der 1. Band befasst sich mit der Pionierzeit der Raumfahrt bis 1975 von den Anfängen bis zum Wettlauf ins All mit der Mondlandung als Höhepunkt. Der 3. Band wird sich mit der Raumfahrt im 21. Jahrhundert befassen, von der Internationalen Raumstation ISS über das europäische Ariane-Programm und den asiatischen Wettlauf ins All bis hin zur privat-kommerziellen Raumfahrt (New Space) und der Rückkehr zum Mond. Damit entwickelt sich die Trilogie zu einem neuen Standardwerk, welches sich sowohl an Fachleute, als auch an interessierte Laien richtet, die einen aufschlussreichen, detaillierten, tiefgründigen und spannenden Einblick in die Geschichte der Raumfahrt erhalten wollen. „Dieses Werk gibt einen exzellenten Überblick der noch jungen Geschichte der Raumfahrt und all ihrer technischen, wissenschaftlichen, ökonomischen und politischen Aspekte.“Thomas Reiter, ehemaliger Astronaut&nbsp; Der AutorAndré T. Hensel (*1968) studierte Geschichte und Germanistik an der Universität Klagenfurt sowie Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaften an der Universität Graz. Seit 2002 leitet er die FH-Bibliothek Kärnten. Er beschäftigt sich bereits in 3. Generation mit dem Thema Raumfahrt, welches ihn seit seiner Kindheit bis zu seiner Diplomarbeit über den Wettlauf der Supermächte ins All vor dem Hintergrund des Kalten Krieges begleitet hat.

This will be the 7th book in the author's 'Lectures on ...' book series, and the first aimed at graduate-level readers(two additional graduate texts are in preparation). Primarily intended for physics graduate students, the book is accessible to advanced undergraduates and will appeal to students with a background in statistics and a keen interest in quantum physics. By the end of this book, readers will be well-prepared for working on research projects that require the drawing of inference from the noisy data collected in quantum experiments, as epitomized by quantum state estimation.The book begins with chapters on the basics of estimation theory and the basics of quantum theory. This includes, in particular, the roles played by the frequentist methods of statistics, which are crucial when planning an experiment, and the Bayesian methods, which are the tools for drawing inference from the actual data gathered. A central concept is that of optimal error regions that supplement the point estimators ('best guesses') with the analogs of error bars in the high-dimensional parameter space; there is, in particular, the plausible region which comprises all point estimators supported by the data.Practical applications require the evaluation of high-dimensional integrals with the aid of Monte Carlo integration. For that, one needs to draw samples of quantum states from the relevant distributions, namely the priors and posteriors of Bayesian methodology. The book discusses the algorithms well-suited for this kind of sampling, which is central to the processing of real-life data.The book illustrates all concepts with pertinent examples and offers numerous exerciseswhich the readers can practice and perfect their skills with. The presentation is detailed and does not skip technical steps, which makes the book particularly valuable for self-studying readers and as textbook adopted by lecturers teaching courses on this or related topics. While the book is based on lecture notes developed for the author's courses on quantum state estimation at NUS and BIT, this book also offers a comprehensive account of the concepts and methods developed in the author's group at CQT and presents this material in textbook form for the first time.

Principles of classical Hamiltonian mechanics say that the evolution of a dynamical system is determined by the Poisson bracket of observable functions with the given Hamiltonian function of the system. In Quantum Mechanics, these principles are modified so that the algebra of observable functions should be replaced by a noncommutative algebra of operators and the Poisson bracket by their commutator so that the canonical commutation relations hold. Thus, working with quantum systems, we must determine the 'quantisation' of our observables, i.e. to choose a noncommutative algebra whose elements would play the role of the observables. With some modifications, this question is the main content of the Deformation Quantisation problem formulated in 1978 by Flato and others.This book is based on the course that the author taught in the Fall semester of 2019 at Peking University. The main purpose of that course and of this book is to acquaint the reader with the vast scope of ideas related to the Deformation Quantisation of Poisson manifolds. The book begins with Quantum Mechanics and Moyal product formula and covers the three main constructions that solve the Deformation Quantisation problem: Lecomte and de Wilde deformation of symplectic manifolds, Fedosov's Quantisation theory and Kontsevich's formality theorem. In the appendices, the Tamarkin's proof of formality theorem is outlined.The book is written in a reader-friendly manner and is as self-contained as possible.
