In The Unknowable Body, Lisa Jean Moore explores the profound disconnect between how we experience our bodies and how the medical world interprets them. Drawing on her own journey through DCIS diagnosis, mastectomy, and reconstruction - alongside her family's navigation of her ex-partner's brain tumour - Moore investigates various unsettling dimensions of bodily uncertainty that emerge when illness enters our lives. As scans revealed secrets that human perception failed to, and while navigating a queer family system that didn't fit institutional categories, the author found herself in territory few roadmaps could chart. This book weaves candid humour and poetic personal narrative and analytical vision to examine how bodies resist complete knowing - medically, emotionally, in time, and through gender and identity. This book examines one of the deepest paradoxes of Colombia’s transition: how a peace agreement and its most innovative institution, the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (SJP), came to divide the nation so profoundly, even as international institutions and experts hailed it as a pioneering model of transitional justice. Part 1 provides historical context for Colombia’s long search for peace, the creation of the SJP, and explains why it generated fear, anger, and political backlash across broad sectors of society. Part 2 centres on the nearly 9 million victims who have borne the gravest consequences of the conflict, through an in-depth analysis of two major SJP macro-cases involving all principal conflict actors. Part 3 examines both the transformative power and the jurisdictional limits of the SJP, especially its uneven capacity to reach the full range of actors implicated in the conflict. The book ultimately asks whether the SJP’s attempt to construct a comprehensive judicial truth can do more than illuminate the past: can it also help narrow the moral and political divide between victims and sectors of the elites that benefited, directly or indirectly, from the conflict? This book examines the role of law in women’s involvement in and their exit from indoor prostitution. It examines the historic development of the existing legal framework and the resulting polarised contemporary legal and policy framings of prostitution which have produced and reproduce two distinct ‘ideal’ legal subjects — the vulnerable victim and public nuisance that is the street prostitute and the agentic, entrepreneurial indoor prostitute.
Addressing the origins of these two subjects of prostitution and examining the discursive frameworks which have led to their solidification in law, this book aims to provide a robust, methodologically and theoretically sound evaluation of the law’s construction of indoor prostitution and the contested legal frameworks which emerged in response. Analysing empirical data from 53 women, 8 practitioners and three case studies of the law in action, and adopting a critical realist methodology, this book provides a detailed socio-legal examination of the law surrounding prostitution from the perspective of those it seeks to regulate. It is intended to provide evidence and guidance to support legislators and policy makers, and support for practitioners advocating for women involved in indoor prostitution. This work is timely given attention to the regulation of prostitution locally, regionally and globally, and the potential gender equality implications of different regulatory models.
