Laura Alejandra Buenaventura Gómez

Malas amistades: infanticidios y relaciones ilícitas en la provincia de Antioquia

(Nueva Granada) 1765-1803

"Recounts the experiences of the author who, twenty years after her partner's murder, is called to confront the past when she finds herself a recognized victim-survivor in case 001 of Colombia's truth and recognition process"-- Provided by publisher.

“Essential reading, filled with exactly the kind of truth that this precarious moment demands.” —Kaira Jewel Lingo, author of We Were Made for These Times Abby Reyes lost her partner, Terence Unity Freitas, as he and two others were murdered after departing Kajka Ika—the heart of the world—of Indigenous U’wa territory in Colombia. Imperiled by multinational oil interests, U’wa lifeways were under attack. Terence, Ingrid Washinawatok El-Issa (Menominee), and Lahe’ena’e Gay (Hawaiian) arrived to listen to community needs and accompany the U’wa. But then they disappeared. Days later, their bodies were found, bound and bullet-riddled in a cow field across the border in Venezuela. Twenty years later, Abby finds herself in Case 001 of Colombia’s truth and recognition process. They want to know her stories. They want to know her questions. They want to know her truth demands: the fragments she’s held for decades about the last days of Terence’s life. Why was he taken? Who pulled the trigger? Who was really behind the killings? Plunged back into grief, ambiguity, and the unknown, Abby is called to navigate the past. Old wounds are reopened, old histories are redrawn, and fresh angers flare as she confronts the testimony of one of her lover’s killers—and the burden that Terence unwittingly compelled her to bear. Spanning three decades and three continents, Truth Demands charts Abby’s parallel journeys as she navigates the waters of loss, purpose, and impermanence while fighting for truth and accountability from big oil. A profound and haunting memoir, Truth Demands is an invitation into the current. It shows us how to hold fast even as we let go—holding us as we bear witness and welcome with courage and skill what the truth demands of us all.

A Memoir of Murder, Oil Wars, and the Rise of Climate Justice

The Cat Prophecies

A thirteen-year-old boy holds the fate of his family, his neighborhood, and the world in his hands when he discovers that his cat is from a secret realm of warrior cats facing a dangerous enemy. The walls between worlds are wearing thin. On one side is the bustling neighborhood of San Antonio—home to thirteen-year-old Tito Rodríguez. On the other is a mythical realm where forces of darkness are looking for a way out. Standing between worlds are the guardians of humankind—a race of fierce warrior cats, who appear in our world as cute and furry companions. When Tito follows a stray cat through a hidden portal, he finds himself at the center of this cosmic battle between the warrior cats and evil spirits that feed on negative emotions. And according to an ancient prophecy, Tito is the Chosen One who will lead the fight against the forces of darkness . . . probably. It turns out that there are three possible Chosen Ones—Tito and his new friends and fellow outsiders Luisito and Isa, who have their own furry sidekicks (or wise mentors, if you ask the cats). And with the darkness slipping through the cracks to the human world, all three will have to train for the ultimate fight and prove who is the true hero.

The Cat Prophecies: Claw Quest

Some constitutional amendments are not really amendments. They are transformative constitutional reforms that reject the essential characteristics of the constitution and destroy its foundations. These constitutional dismemberments demolish the basic structure of the constitution while at the same time building a new foundation rooted in principles contrary to the old. Latin America has been particularly susceptible to constitutional dismemberments. This book draws from law, history, and politics both to demonstrate that Latin American constitutions have been the target of constitutional dismemberment and to explain the social and political forces behind these transformative reforms as well as their consequences. The outstanding contributors to this volume apply the concept of constitutional dismemberment systematically across the region in some of the world's most fascinating jurisdictions for the study of constitutional change: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela. The jurisdictions chosen are among the ones in the region whose constitutions have been most reformed by both proper and improper means. In addition, many of these jurisdictions have been largely neglected in the English language literature on constitutional change. This collection therefore seeks both to remedy this deficiency and, as a consequence, to encourage others to account for them and other little-known constitutions as comparators in their own comparative studies. As such, Comparative Constitutional Reform in Latin America is an invaluable resource for researchers, academics, and policymakers in the areas of constitutional law and politics, legal theory, and public law.

“Schlink knows how to tell a gripping yarn . . . [The Granddaughter] is a rewarding and wonderfully readable novel.” —The Guardian“A brilliant dissection of a fragmented nation in which a glimmer of hope relieves a somber but wholly memorable tale.” —Kirkus (starred review)From the bestselling author of The Reader, a striking exploration of the past, told through the story of a German bookseller’s attempt to connect with his radicalized granddaughter. It is only after the sudden death of his wife, Birgit, that Kaspar discovers the price she paid years earlier when she fled East Germany to join him: she had to abandon her baby. Shattered by grief, yet animated by a new hope, Kaspar closes up his bookshop in present day Berlin and sets off to find her lost child in the east. His search leads him to a rural community of neo-Nazis, intent on reclaiming and settling ancestral lands to the East. Among them, Kaspar encounters Svenja, a woman whose eyes, hair, and even voice remind him of Birgit. Beside her is a red-haired, slouching, fifteen-year-old girl. His granddaughter? Their worlds could not be more different— an ideological gulf of mistrust yawns between them— but he is determined to accept her as his own.More than twenty-five years after The Reader, Bernhard Schlink once again offers a masterfully gripping novel that powerfully probes the past’s role in contemporary life, transporting us from the divided Germany of the 1960s to modern day Australia, and asking what unites or separates us.Translated from the German by Charlotte Collins

Nexos y diferencias

eguras fortalezas de amistad : (des)encuentros entre la literatura latinoamericana y los países comunistas europeos

An Independent, Financial Times, and Irish Times Book of the Year! A couple's search for a rural paradise on the Caribbean coast takes a sinister turn in this darkly ironic modern classic. When J. and Elena swap the parties and culture of the city for a simpler life on Colombia's remote Caribbean coast, they expect to find an Eden to call their own. Their plan is to lead the good life, self-sufficient and close to nature. But from the very start, each day brings small defeats and imperceptible dramas, which gradually turn paradise into hell... A satire of hippyism, ecological fantasies, and of the very idea that man can control fate, In the Beginning Was the Sea is a searingly ironic account of man's confrontation with nature and with himself. In amongst the mango groves, the young couple's surroundings inexorably claim back every inch of the 'civilisation' they brought with them, leaving them to question how they will survive in this new environment when they themselves remain unchanged. And, as their relationship breaks down--and the horror unfolds--who can they count on if not each other? Based on a true story, In the Beginning Was the Sea is a menacing, darkly funny tale of human weakness, the terrifying power of nature, and what happens when our dreams meet their fateful reality.

Climate change is one of the great problems facing humanity; this book introduces readers to major rulings from around the world that centre on climate change as a core focus. In addition to including general considerations, discussion, and analysis of major climate cases, the book engages with specific case studies. A range of major rulings from around the world are examined in detail: The Heathrow Runway Case (UK); The Urgenda Case (Netherlands); The Colombian Amazon Case (Colombia); The Centre for Oil Pollution Watch Case (Nigeria); The Gloucester Resources Case (Australia); Climate Case Ireland (Ireland). The reader is taken through relevant facts, issues, law and commentary pertinent to each case, and a clear, critical and evaluative account of each ruling is provided. Climate law has emerged more recently than many other established branches of law, yet it is fast becoming one of the most discussed and studied areas of law around the world. This introduction to important cases in the area is essential reading for students, lawyers, and researchers engaged with climate law and policy in educational and practical settings.
