This is a new and extensively revised edition of Martin Parr's classic photobook Small World. First published in 1996 Small World is one of the most popular and most important of Martin Parr's books. It has been in print continuously since its first publication. This revised and extended edition includes more than 80 photographs and features many of Martin Parr's most iconic images. It is a biting, very funny satire in which Parr looks at tourism worldwide, exposing the increasingly homogenous 'global culture' where in the search for different cultures those same cultures are destroyed. In a world of 'carbon footprints', global warming and climate crisis, the issues that Parr raised almost thirty years ago when the book was first published are even more relevant today. Dialectics of the Global

Pan-Africanism has been a global project aiming to unite people of African descent since the late nineteenth century. Notions of Black and African arts and aesthetics have functioned as a bridge and brought positive identification across national, ethnic, or class divides even when rifts have appeared unbridgeable. They were able to mediate Africanity positively, both prior to and during the struggle for liberation and at times when the dream of a unified African nation died. This study explores central aspects, proponents, and opponents of Pan-African aesthetics and shows that conceptualizations of Black, African, and Afrocentric aesthetics form a kaleidoscope that is constantly changing. Based on historical sources, in-depth reading and qualitative interviews, the study illustrates what happened to the discussions in the postcolonial era. The story unfolds along the life paths and approaches of four intellectuals from Anglophone and Francophone Africa. Their framings can tell us more about the underlying themes, contestations, and contradictions of emancipatory projects in the mid-twentieth century and show us that the study of Pan-Africanism is not yet exhausted; neither is the history of the idea and the movement.

This book charts a path for developing a uniquely South African affirmative action regime. It proposes a transformative approach to affirmative action, one capable of untangling and dismantling the tensions that arise between the South African Constitution's promise of equality and the reality of being the world's most unequal society. Against the background of South Africa's commitment to transformative constitutionalism and substantive equality, the book demonstrates how affirmative action measures can be designed and implemented in a way that tackles deeply ingrained inequality. By examining the affirmative action jurisprudence of the South African Constitutional Court, as well as the courts in Kenya, the United States, Canada, and India, the book outlines how the courts, the legislature and executive policymakers in South Africa should address fundamental questions that arise in the design and implementation of affirmative action. These questions include what affirmative measures should aim to achieve (for what purpose?), how to determine beneficiary groups (for whom?), with a focus on quotas, the permissible forms that affirmative action could take (through what means?), and whether there is a set end-date for affirmative action (for how long?). By illustrating the possibility of a transformative approach to affirmative action, this book responds to the growing critique of affirmative action from both the left and right in South Africa and adds to the global conversation on the utility of affirmative action in the fight to eradicate inequality.
