The Lewis Walpole Series in Eighteenth-Century Culture and History

A monumental cartographic history of the African slave trade, updated and expanded in a new edition &nbsp; In the first edition of Atlas of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, two leading historians explored details of the 350-year history of African slave traffic to the New World. They showed, with nearly 200 original maps, where the captives came from, how long the journeys lasted, how many died on the voyages, and what the ports and destinations were. They also presented details about the trade itself, including the economics. &nbsp; In this groundbreaking revised edition, 25 new maps locate the major language groups involved in the traffic and show the movement of Africans from the interior of the continent to the Americas, as well as from one part of the Americas to another. Accompanying the maps, as in the first edition, are revealing illustrations and contemporary literary selections, including poems, letters, and diary entries. &nbsp; With up-to-date information drawn from the database Slave Voyages (www.slavevoyages.org), with its records of more than 36,000 voyages, the atlas provides the fullest possible picture of the extent and inhumanity of one of the largest forced migrations in history.

This book goes on to describe the contestations, appropriations and transformations of the concept over time. Pan-Africanism has been a global project aiming to unite people of African descent since the late nineteenth century. Notions of Black and African arts and aesthetics have functioned as a bridge and brought positive identification across national, ethnic, or class divides even when rifts have appeared unbridgeable. They were able to mediate Africanity positively, both prior to and during the struggle for liberation and at times when the dream of a unified African nation died. This study explores central aspects, proponents, and opponents of Pan-African aesthetics and shows that conceptualizations of Black, African, and Afrocentric aesthetics form a kaleidoscope that is constantly changing. Based on historical sources, in-depth reading and qualitative interviews, the study illustrates what happened to the discussions in the postcolonial era. The story unfolds along the life paths and approaches of four intellectuals from Anglophone and Francophone Africa. Their framings can tell us more about the underlying themes, contestations, and contradictions of emancipatory projects in the mid-twentieth century and show us that the study of Pan-Africanism is not yet exhausted; neither is the history of the idea and the movement.

A captivating collection of Native American portraiture by early 20th-century Japanese photographer&nbsp;Frank S. Matsura frames the rarely told story of his work and unique personal life. Frank S. Matsura (1873-1913) was an immigrant photographer, a local hero, a charismatic original, an enigma, and a man of the community whose legacy has grown over time. Today, historians are still compiling the details of Frank’s unconventional life, and his identity and images are enjoying a revival. WerkstattGeschichte ist eine Zeitschrift, in der über Geschichte und ihre Akteur*innen wie über historisches Forschen und Schreiben reflektiert wird. Sie bietet Platz, konventionelle Perspektiven zu durchbrechen und neue Formen der Darstellung zu erproben. Die Zeitschrift bleibt der Sozialgeschichte verbunden, legt aber Wert darauf, die 'große Geschichte' aus alltagsgeschichtlicher Sicht zu befragen. Im aktuellen Heft, herausgegeben von Frank Wolff und Jochen Lingelbach, widmen sich die Beiträger*innen der Interdependenz von Grenze und Gesellschaft. Ausgehend von der These, dass das Geschehen an staatlichen Außengrenzen Rückwirkungen auf innergesellschaftliche Prozesse hat, analysieren sie diese als Grenzinternalisierung gefasste Wechselwirkung.
