Lessons from Past Heroes

How the rejection of victimhood dogmas will save South Africa

The Added Value of Equality

Families, Law, and Society

Explores the failures of family court and calls for immediate and permanent change

At the turn of the twentieth century, American social reformers created the first juvenile court. They imagined a therapeutic court where informality, specially trained public servants, and a kindly, all-knowing judge would assist children and families. But the dream of a benevolent means of judicial problem-solving was never realized. A century later, children and families continue to be failed by this deeply flawed court.

The End of Family Court rejects the foundational premise that family court can do good when intervening in family life and challenges its endless reinvention to survive. Jane M. Spinak illustrates how the procedures and policies of modern family court are deeply entwined in a heritage of racism, a profound disdain for poverty, and assimilationist norms intent on fixing children and families who are different. And the court’s interventionist goals remain steeped in an approach to equity and well-being that demands individual rather than collective responsibility for the security and welfare of families.

Spinak proposes concrete steps toward abolishing the court: shifting most family supports out of the court’s sphere, vastly reducing the types and number of matters that need court intervention, and ensuring that any case that requires legal adjudication has the due process protections of a court of law. She calls for strategies that center trusting and respecting the abilities of communities to create and sustain meaningful solutions for families. An abolitionist approach, in turn, celebrates a radical imagination that embraces and supports all families in a fair and equal economic and political democracy.

Book IV: Of Systems of Political Economy

Analytic Summary of The Wealth of Nations

Business and Management (R0)

This book presents a new vision and strategy for a spiritual antiracism that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. Employing the practice of seeing, choosing, and acting as a framework, it examines the role of Christian spirituality, which includes religious values, interpretations of scripture and tradition, and general concerns with the human soul. Christian spirituality was integral to developing and justifying an ideology of “white” supremacy and Christian spirituality has the potential for resisting and rejecting this same racism. Responding to the very idea of “race,” born from the ideology of racism and “white” supremacy, the author shows how to envision and implement a spiritual approach that respects both human dignity and individual distinctiveness. Understanding the fundamental value of human dignity as deeply rooted in the Christian tradition serves as one antidote for other readings of the tradition that can be used to justify oppression and segregation.

This book addresses those interested in leadership in challenging times buffeted by issues of racism, privilege, and power in our communities, workplaces, and lives. It will appeal to those who are seeking how to lead within the tensions of these times with fresh approaches to questions of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

A Spiritual Approach to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Antiracist Leadership

Populism has taken root almost everywhere in the West. It is crucial to understand how it has come about, where its antagonistic worldview, its nativism, its illiberalism and its anti-pluralism will take us, and how we should seek to fend off this threat to liberal democracy. In particular, what could liberal answers look like?

This book is a collection of essays written by young and senior scholars in various fields from philosophy to economics. Part I explores populism’s nature and causes, shedding light on the lure of sovereignty, the perceived representation gap and the process of radicalization, and human psychology. Part II is dedicated to observations inside the political arena, pitting liberalism and populism in a historical perspective, analyzing the risk of democratic backsliding, and asking how liberals should navigate the political need to make compromises. In Part III, the focus turns to liberal responses such as rules-based public deliberation, a liberal ethics attending to civic virtues, improved representation through the blockchain, and polycentric migration policies. Part IV, finally, houses critical engagements with influential relevant authors such as Foucault, Laclau, Berlin, and Harrington.

Liberal Responses to Populism is a rich and thought-provoking read for scholars and students in political economy, political science, and political philosophy.

Migrant Traders in South Africa

Excessive use of force by police officers in Germany has only been investigated to a limited extent to date. This book provides comprehensive scientific findings on relevant situations and how they are dealt with under criminal law. Based on a survey of victims with over 3,300 participants and more than 60 qualitative interviews, the cases are presented as complex interactions in which the police's special power of definition becomes apparent.
