Money, Warfare and Power in the Ancient World offers twelve papers analysing the processes, consequences and problems involved in the monetization of warfare and its connection to political power in antiquity. The contributions explore not only how powerful men and states used money and coinage to achieve their aims, but how these aims and methods had often already been shaped by the medium of coined money – typically with unintended consequences. These complex relationships between money, warfare and political power – both personal and collective – are explored across different cultures and socio-political systems around the ancient Mediterranean, ranging from Pharaonic Egypt to Late Antique Europe.
 
 This volume is also a tribute to the life and impact of Professor Matthew Trundle, an inspiring teacher and scholar, who was devoted to promoting the discipline of Classics in New Zealand and beyond. At the time of his death, he was writing a book on the wider importance of money in the Greek world. A central piece of this research is incorporated into this volume, completed by one of his former students, Christopher De Lisle. Additionally, Trundle had situated himself at the centre of a wide-ranging conversation on the nature of money and power in antiquity. The contributions of scholars of ancient monetization in this volume bring together many of the threads of those conversions, further advancing a field which Matthew Trundle had worked so tirelessly to promote.

Money, Warfare and Power in the Ancient World

Schon Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts wurden Parallelen zwischen dem kolloquialen Latein eines Plautus und der spätantiken Umgangssprache festgestellt. Dieses Phänomen wird als Submersion (engl. Submerged Latin) oder Untertunnelung des klassischen Latein bezeichnet. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht den sprachgeschichtlichen Zusammenhang der vor- und nachklassischen lateinischen Umgangssprache anhand von Kolloquialismen aus verschiedensten Quellen von 200 v. Chr. bis 400 n. Chr. Dabei sollen vor allem morphosyntaktische Phänomene im Mittelpunkt stehen, die in der Submersionsforschung bislang weniger Beachtung gefunden haben als phonologische oder lexikalische Phänomene. Das Vorkommen einzelner sprachlicher Phänomene wird über die verschiedenen Quellen hinweg verglichen und analysiert, um zu beurteilen, ob jeweils von Submersion gesprochen werden kann oder nicht.

Greek literature of the Roman Empire has long ago ceased to be treated as the fruit of pure imitation and unimaginative reproduction of literary models from the Classical age. Drawing from the conceptual and methodological agendas of modern fields such as narratology, cognitive studies, and linguistics, classicists have approached the authors of the Second Sophistic with a fresh eye and treat them as anything but lacking originality in the ways they chose themes and developed their compositional styles. Nevertheless, a great amount of the Imperial literature still remains significantly unexplored in terms of the ways literary genres evolved at those times and interacted with each other. Although rhetoric has left its mark on the literary production of this era, on the other hand, an abundance of other genres call for further comparative research. In this line of thought, the papers of this volume focus on how the literary goal-settings of Imperial Greek authors shaped the generic trends and physiognomy of current literary production, and penetrate more into the various co-existing and, very frequently, interactive modes of writing, in order to shed new light on the generic fusions operated in the Imperial Era on a literary level.

Chaucer's Ethical Philosophy argues that Chaucer's fictions engage with the most urgent questions of modern political and moral philosophy. Close analysis of Troilus and Criseyde, the Canterbury Tales, and the Book of the Duchess reveals the ways in which Chaucer anticipates modern philosophical debates, using his fictions to explore the ethics of subjectivity and recognition, agency and moral responsibility; concerns that Chaucer experimentally formulated and discomposed across his works are amongst those that most animate and trouble contemporary ethical philosophy.
