Since the 2003 UNESCO Convention, cultural heritage policies have promoted diversity and grassroots participation. Deborah Sielert explores how these global discourses do and do not unfold in three small towns in northern Germany, where Portuguese, Dutch, and East Frisian minorities have shaped the cultural sphere since the 1990s - despite the absence of official heritage frameworks. Through a comparative multi-sited study, the research traces how local actors engage with symbolic boundary-making in ethnicised festivals and associations, and how global heritage regimes inform these endeavours. This study offers a fresh sociological lens on the interplay between local sensemaking and the worldmaking power of heritage discourse.

Nach 'Das Museum im kolonialen Kontext' erscheint nun der zweite Band über die aktuellen Forschungen zu diesem Thema an österreichischen Institutionen.

Die nachhaltige Aufarbeitung und Erforschung der kolonialen Vergangenheit der europäischen Museen hat in den letzten Jahren an Intensität und Sichtbarkeit gewonnen. Auch Fragen zu einer potenziellen Restitution bei Vorliegen nachweisbarer Unrechtskontexte werden verschiedentlich verhandelt. South Africa presents the perplexing paradox of arguably having the most progressive Constitution in the world, marked by full-throated socio-economic rights protection, while also being one of the most unequal countries in the world. This book takes seriously increasing sociopolitical challenges to the legitimacy of South Africa's post-apartheid legal order and scorching critiques of the constitutional settlement, against which many in the legal establishment bristle. Sindiso Mnisi develops 'Alter-Native Constitutionalism,' which is distinguished by equitable amalgamation of customary and common law with vernacular (or 'living') law, as a more compelling and just model for South Africa to adopt in its future than the legal pluralism that largely represents the afterlives of colonialism. This book draws on and contributes to international debates about the role of law in decolonising post-colonial orders and economic redistribution, addressing issues of poverty and inequality, gender, race, indigeneity, and customary vs vernacular law.

Especially in middle- and upper-class milieus, childhood appears as a spatial crisis in which children are patronised and disempowered in the name of protection. Claudia Mock draws on intergenerational biographies and mental maps from Nairobi and Berlin to reveal how security discourses intertwine with bourgeois values and architectures, reshaping childhoods in these cities in surprisingly similar ways since 1960.
