After the French Revolution, a choice had to be made between reaction and progressive development. Standing on the side of the Anciens were now the defenders of the Ancien Régime , who opposed the innovators and their innovations. The debate then spilled out into the literary field and became interdisciplinary, with consequences for historiography and the philosophical underpinnings of literary movements.
