Keeping the State Weak

Economic Informality and the Weak-State Trap in Sub-Saharan Africa

This book studies one part of the Sundarbans, the largest and one of the most fragile mangrove ecosystems in the world. The study is placed in the context of highly topical international debates on biodiversity, climate change and economic transformation, in a region of South Asia that still faces immense population pressure and severe poverty. An analysis of existing and potential future policies sets the debate in a comparative international perspective that has relevance well beyond the confines of South Asia.
 
 While there have been a large number of studies on the socio-economic aspects of physical quality of life in the Sunderbans, there are very few perception studies except at a basic level. The current volume has two major aspects. The first part contains a detailed study of overall 
 demography and objective life condition
 which includes (a) quality and ownership of private goods – equipment and machinery, livestock, house, land, consumer goods; (b) quality of public goods and amenities and their accessibility; (c) objective measures of relatively abstract factors related to social, political and familial environment such as quality of governance, extent of gender equality, social inclusion, social harmony, security, law and order, family bondings; (d) financial assets and indebtedness; (e) income and expenditure; (f) natural and man-made calamity, and; (g) vulnerability related to points (d), (e) and (f) above.
 
 The second part comprises a detailed study of 
 subjective life satisfaction, and value systems and priorities
 . The former refers to 
 people’s perception
 regarding the various facets of their 
 personal life
 - economic situation, standard of living, family and friends, work life and environment as also their 
 perception about the well-being of the community
 . This refers to the overall social, business, and political environment such as social and help network, social inclusion, communal harmony, participation in civic and social activities, job opportunities and employment generation, government developmental project initiatives, disaster management initiatives, law and order etc. 
 Value systems and priorities
 refer to individual rankings of the factors considered as necessary for personal happiness and for a happy society. It also includes their preferred rankings of government developmental initiatives and views regarding effectiveness and impact of such initiatives.&nbsp;

Public diplomacy matters to the G20. As the self declared 'premier international forum for economic cooperation', the G20 has global interests and ambitions. The G20 requires the ongoing engagement and support of global public audiences. Simply put, it is a matter of effectiveness, legitimacy and credibility. Yet as an informal, nomadic institution that brings together a diverse array of high profile actors, global, interests and issues, the G20 also presents unique opportunities and challenges to public diplomacy's agenda. The wider narrative of the G20 as an inclusive institution capable of involving publics in the process of global change is underexplored. This book asserts that public diplomacy is the key to the G20's ongoing development, and proposes a fourth phase to John Kirton's (2013), current three phased approach: the mobilization of the many. By examining the many facets of G20 public diplomacy, Byrne contributes to the evolving understanding of the G20 while offering new insights on the evolving practice of public diplomacy beyond the traditional state-centric perspective.

The rising volume of critique and commentary about the green economy is preceding a much-needed, global understanding of the concept: the principal aim of this book, accordingly, is to provide a detailed analysis of the emergence, anatomy and workings of the green economy. It traces the evolution of the contemporary green economy idea, interrogates the motivations of green economy strategies and explores how processes of economic-environmental change can be managed. The book draws on examples from across the Global North and Global South to contribute a more diverse understanding of the green economy, and provide useful case study material for students on a wide range of courses.

The ‘green economy’ has emerged in recent years as a ‘new’ concept in economic thinking and has quickly become embedded in mainstream policy and financial discourses. The idea of a green economy has been celebrated by those who see it as a welcome change to the organisation of global and national economies that will result in more ecologically sensitive modes of production and consumption. At the same time, the concept has been subjected to intense critique from several quarters, such as green NGOs and activists as another iteration of ‘business as usual’ or as a mask for capitalism’s continuing and worsening impacts on the environment. But this rush to either praise or condemn the concept, seems to have got ahead of developing a thorough understanding of what the green economy actually is in terms of its rationales, actors, modes, areas and sectors of operation. This is the first book to present a new approach of institutional design as an evolutionary applied policy based on coherent conceptualization and methodology, and to study the actuality and implications of diversifying real/virtual community currencies. In contrast to a de facto standard theory, an institutional ecosystem can be composed of various institutions that continue to coexist with changing relative frequencies. In this view, diversified monetary institutions with local rules are feasible and realistic. Community currencies are worldwide attempts to redress such problems as financial instability, chronic stagnation, and decline of communities caused by globalization of the economy. Considering those alternative movements as a new type of policy, "evolutionist institutional design", this book clarifies the feasibility and significance of community currencies in the current era of globalization. The book also provides a better understanding than mainstream approaches of such platform institutions as money that determine fundamental means of cognition and action of interacting agents. Money is a symbolically generalized communication medium in the mesodomain that mediates between socioeconomic performance and patterns in the macrodomain and motives and cognitive frameworks in the microdomain. Conventional national systems of money and finance are platform institutions that determine basic replicators for a capitalistic market economy to evolve. In contrast, community currencies conveying both economic and social/cultural values are distinct platform institutions that are expected to endogenously change such basic replicators in outer and inner institutions for agents to a noncapitalistic market economy. These currencies are considered target institutions for "media design" in the framework of evolutionist institutional design.
