Edwards K: Jail Bird

Mick Hardin Novels

Master storyteller Chris Offutt’s acclaimed crime series has been praised by Ian Rankin as “righteous Kentucky noir with top notes of Daniel Woodrell and S. A. Cosby,” and in this breakneck new novel, sheriff Mick Hardin navigates the treacherous terrain of a town’s festering secrets and the violent forces who want to keep them hiddenLauded as a “masterclass in the craft of crime fiction” (CrimeReads), Chris Offutt’s beloved and critically acclaimed Mick Hardin series is an atmospheric, tightly crafted testament to Southern noir. The Reluctant Sheriff is a dark, bracing return to the hills of eastern Kentucky where secrets roil beneath the surface, and nothing and no one stays in the past for long.Mick Hardin never wanted to be sheriff. An ex-Army CID officer, he’s supposed to be retired—or he was until his sister, Linda, was shot in the line of duty, requiring him to step in as interim sheriff while she recovered. Now he’s stuck in Rocksalt, the place he was most hoping to escape.Back in uniform, Mick is chafing at the sudden dissolution of his retirement plans, wearied by the petty squabbles of Rocksalt’s townsfolk. It’s all business as usual, until the murder of a local bar owner draws an unlikely suspect who threatens to fan the flames of Mick’s past. When two more bodies turn up, seemingly unconnected to the first, Mick is forced to reckon with the mysterious circumstances of a case not so open-and-shut as everyone believes. Meanwhile, Linda is slowly healing when a familiar business tycoon with a vested interest in her returning as sheriff makes it difficult for her to remain on the sidelines.Unflinching and devilishly compulsive, The Reluctant Sheriff is an explosive thriller confirming Chris Offutt as a Southern writer of muscular prose and unrivaled talent.

A Mick Hardin Novel

The Reluctant Sheriff

A Kansas State Highway Trooper's shift takes a life-shattering turn. Discover the story of Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Conroy O'Brien's life, murder, its devastating impact on his family, and the criminals' consequences.Murder at Matfield Green tells the powerful story of Trooper Conroy O'Brien, a dedicated young officer whose life was cut short during a deadly traffic stop with ruthless criminals. This book uncovers the man behind the badge, the desperate men who killed him, and the dramatic pursuit of justice that followed. More than just a true crime story, it reveals the lasting shockwaves of O'Brien's murder-felt by his family, fellow troopers, and the community he served.

Murder At Matfield Green

Indigenous Peoples and the Law

This book is the first comparative law study of collateral consequences of criminal conviction in all federally recognized Indian tribes in the lower 48 U.S. states, and the mechanisms for restoring civil rights in tribal law.Surveying the constitutions, codes, and ordinances of tribal jurisdictions reveals a broad range of consequences - the impact of which has not been comprehensively and critically examined. Like state and federal jurisdictions, tribal law attaches thousands of legal disabilities to tribal offices, business licenses and permits, social services, and civil rights for persons with criminal convictions. This is especially true in economically important industries such as gaming and resource extraction; additionally, rapidly changing areas such as marijuana regulation and sex offender registries expand the scope still further. This book catalogues restoration of rights procedures in tribal law, to include pardons, expungements, and record sealing. Collateral consequences have proliferated in tribal law because of the limitations of tribal criminal jurisdiction, including over non-tribal members. However, tribal collateral consequences risk contributing to overcriminalization and social exclusion for persons with previous criminal convictions, especially as Native Americans are already disproportionately impacted by the U.S. criminal justice system. This book will appeal to legal academics, scholars, and practitioners working in tribal criminal law, as well as to others with interests in Indigenous legal issues.

Collateral Consequences, Pardons, and Expungements in Indian Country

Criminal Convictions in U.S. Tribal Law

A Silent Forest. A Sniper's Bullet. A Community Held Hostage.

On the night of September 12, 2014, the autumnal quiet of the Pocono Mountains was shattered by the crack of a .308-caliber rifle. At the Pennsylvania State Police barracks in Blooming Grove, Corporal Bryon Dickson and Trooper Alex Douglass fell, victims of a calculated ambush launched from the darkness of the treeline.

The shooter was not a phantom, but a neighbor: Eric Matthew Frein, a survivalist and military reenactor who had spent years preparing for a private war against the state. As Frein vanished into the dense, unforgiving woodlands he knew intimately, he sparked one of the largest and most expensive manhunts in American history. It also landed him on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list.

LYING IN WAIT takes readers deep inside the forty-eight-day siege that transformed a peaceful region into a "Green Hell" of fear and paranoia. From the terrified silence of lockdown to the high-tech war room of the pursuit, Howard Frank reconstructs the harrowing search for a "mission-oriented killer" who viewed murder as an art form.

Drawing on forensic reports, court transcripts, interviews with key players, and the killer's own chilling journals, this is the definitive account of a domestic terrorist who mistook his own delusions for revolution, and the relentless machinery of justice that rose to meet him.

'A book of such hugely ambitious scope' Financial Times'Gingeras's riveting book delves into the murky origins, effects and legacies of the most terrifying figures in the history of crime' The i'Gingeras writes well and joins the historical dots' TelegraphFew forces have shaped our world as powerfully - or as secretly - as mafias.Groups such as La Cosa Nostra, the Medellín Cartel, New York's Five Families, the Japanese yakuza and Russian vory are notorious, endlessly covered in news stories and popular media. Yet when official histories are written, their role in shaping nations, economies and societies is rarely acknowledged. In Mafia: A Global History, Ryan Gingeras draws on more than a decade of research to uncover this suppressed underworld history. Crossing centuries and continents, he introduces legendary figures - Al Capone, Pablo Escobar, Du Yuesheng - and explores the conditions, cultures and locales that gave birth to modern mafias: Sicily, Marseille, New York, Colombia, Tokyo. As he reconstructs the rise of a gang or the life of a gangster, he also charts the expanding power of states and the increasingly international reach of trade, crime and law enforcement. After all, governments define what is a crime and who is a criminal, and their agents create the strategies used to limit or defend against their threat. Beginning with bandits and ending with today's 'mafia states' - and the alarming blurring of lines between gangsters, corporations and political leaders - this sweeping narrative traces the evolution of organised crime in response to industrialisation, globalisation and technological change. By charting the origins, consolidation and transformation of mafias, Gingeras reveals not only where contemporary gangsters come from, but how they became central to our imagination and why they are the uncredited architects of the modern world.

Mafia: A Global History

Every interaction that justice system staff have with those involved in the justice system presents an opportunity to improve the rehabilitation process. This book is the first of its kind to advocate for educating all justice system workers in the CMC integrative approach, which suggests that building therapeutic relationships through a combination of client-centered therapy (C), motivational interviewing (M) and cognitive behavioral therapy (C) has the potential to improve client rehabilitation. This book examines racial disparities in the justice system; the psychological, sociological and criminological characteristics of those involved in the justice system; and the roles of the police, courts and corrections. The book also discusses the personality typologies of justice system staff, the personal power bases they may exhibit, the mental health training they receive, and the importance of building a therapeutic relationship with clients. Improving Criminal Justice Rehabilitation Through the Therapeutic Relationship: An Integratve Approach provides readers with the knowledge and the techniques needed to implement the easy to learn CMC method. It is intended to be a valuable resource for everyone working in the criminal justice system. The book discusses how the approach benefits clients, justice system staff, the justice system and society. It is unique in that it introduces criminal justice personnel to an essential psychological approach and techniques that can improve client rehabilitation, reduce recidivism, and be a positive step in criminal justice reform.

In striking black-and-white photo portraits, dozens of survivors of Michigan's cruel sentencing of children to life without parole-now free adults-are portrayed with irrepressible dignity.

The United States is the only country in the world that sentences children to serve time in adult prisons without the possibility of parole. Michigan incarcerated 362 of them, more than any other state.

Historically, mug shots and prison photos were used to bolster the narrative that these children were irredeemable and undeserving of rehabilitation and a return home. The portrayal of children in conflict with the law, and particularly children of color, as inherently threatening, dangerous, and adult-like, has deep roots in the US. This narrative has been key to denying these youth second chances and were foundational in justifying cruel and excessive punishment of youth, especially those of color, in the criminal legal system.

In Morning from Now On, LaBelle, himself a survivor of childhood carceral experience, cocreates astute and nuanced portraits with more than fifty of those hundreds of people in Michigan incarcerated as children. Accompanying essays provide critical context on the history, racialization, and impact on a society that locks away our children.

In witnessing these survivors' yearning for freedom and the challenges and obstacles, as well as the wonder and joy, they experience upon release, this collection reminds us of their almost unfathomable losses and to cherish all our children.

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERIn one of the most extraordinary true crime stories ever published, Broken Plea questions what really happened in the house on King Road--and the results of that investigation, still unfolding in real time, will astound you.Was there more than one killer? Had the crime scene been cleaned and sanitized before the police arrived? Was furniture staged to throw off detectives? In the aftermath of Bryan Kohberger's request to withdraw his guilty plea, there are more questions than ever before. In the early morning hours of November 13, 2022, four lives were lost in a brutal crime in Moscow, Idaho--and a nation demanded answers. When a suspect accepted a plea bargain, the story seemed settled. Justice, many believed, had been served.Broken Plea prophetically challenges that assumption.Drawing on court records, investigative timelines, witness statements, and apparently overlooked inconsistencies, this meticulously researched exposé examines how a rush to judgment may have shaped one of the most closely watched murder cases in recent memory. As the official narrative hardened, critical leads went unexplored, contradictory evidence was minimized, and alternative explanations faded from view. This book does not claim certainty where none exists. Instead, it asks the questions that were never fully pursued: What happens when pressure to close a case outweighs the search for truth? What evidence may have been sidelined, and why? And what are the consequences when a plea doesn't end scrutiny but invites it?Clear-eyed, unsparing, and deeply unsettling, Broken Plea reopens a case that never should have closed as it did--and invites readers to look again at what justice demands when the truth remains unresolved.

Winner of the Balcones Prize in NonfictionLonglisted for the National Book Critics Circle award for NonfictionThe New York Times-bestselling, National Book Award-nominated author of The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois and The Age of Phillis makes her nonfiction debut with this personal and thought-provoking work that explores the journeys and possibilities of Black women throughout American history and in contemporary times.Honorée Fanonne Jeffers is at a crossroads.Traditional African/Black American cultures present the crossroads as a place of simultaneous difficulty and possibility. In contemporary times, Kimberlé Crenshaw coined the phrase “intersectionality” to explain the unique position of Black women in America. In many ways, they are at a third crossroads: attempting to fit into notions of femininity and respectability primarily assigned to White women, while inventing improvisational strategies to combat oppression. In Misbehaving at the Crossroads, Jeffers explores the emotional and historical tensions in Black women’s public lives and her own private life. She charts voyages of Black girlhood to womanhood and the currents buffeting these journeys, including the difficulties of racially gendered oppression, the challenges of documenting Black women’s ancestry; the adultification of Black girls; the irony of Black female respectability politics; the origins of Womanism/Black feminism; and resistance to White supremacy and patriarchy. As Jeffers shows with empathy and wisdom, naming difficult historical truths represents both Blues and transcendence, a crossroads that speaks.Necessary and sharply observed, provocative and humane, and full of the insight and brilliance that has characterized her poetry and fiction, Misbehaving at the Crossroads illustrates the life of one extraordinary Black woman—and her extraordinary foremothers.
