This book explores the complexity of cities as sites of warfare and investigates the ever-growing challenges for Disaster Risk Management (DRM). Through analysis of existing literature, media coverage and in-depth case studies, this title investigates the vulnerabilities of growing cities, the consequences citizens face in crises, and the effectiveness of DRM systems.
By depicting the serious global security problems that test systems of culture, governance, war and peace practices, this book encourages discussion around the present and future condition of cities. The volume investigates the impacts of urban warfare and argues for the implementation of effective DRM systems that are based on understanding of disaster risk in all its dimensions, achieved through well-designed training programs employing the latest teaching-learning theories and agile methodologies.
Stanis¿aw Kowalkowski is professor at War Studies University, Warsaw, Poland. He is the author and co-author of 230 different scientific studies, including ‘Determinants and possibilities of counteracting the use of improvised explosive devices’; and has participated in 12 development projects, including project dedicated to ‘Improving the Safety and Protection of Soldiers on Missions Through Research and Development in Military Medical and Technical Areas’.
Marek Wrzosek is professor at War Studies University, Warsaw, Poland. His military, research and teaching career develops in the scope of military reconnaissance systems, information systems and particularly military and non-military threats assessment. He published numerous theoretical and practical works, participated in the international research projects. His most important works include 
Military threats to Poland after the Russian’s invasion of Ukraine; Future wars; Doctrines, tactics, military operations.
Danuta Kämierczak is associate professor at University of The National Education Commission, Krakow, Poland. Her scope of research includes security studies including human security, education management, disaster risk management. She participated in international projects on security and safety, and disaster risk management.

Years after the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic started to unfold, have we yet learned the deep lessons essential to maintaining and improving democracy to meet crisis challenges? Is it preferable to have a high income or more leisure time? To promote industrialisation and employment in a given territory, or preserve its environmental and landscape integrity? Realistically, each of these dimensions is important in defining individual and collective well-being, in which all these aspects should coexist in a truly balanced and sustainable development path at the local scale. An approach measuring well-being, and possibly, sustainable development, based solely on the economic sphere, is reductive and misleading as a policy-relevant tool. The complexity of the argument at stake requires refined approaches and more elaborate measures - than simple gross domestic product (GDP). It is possible to conceive truly sustainable economic policies relying only on instruments and indicators involving multiple dimensions, in turn promoting quality of life. Moreover, applications of this perspective at regional and local levels are important, as territories are the collecting agents guaranteeing and promoting processes of supra-individual utility, for example, environment quality or social cohesion. These institutions are responsible for the important role of outlining specific development policies for communities and the sustainable paths to be undertaken, with the aim of increasing the effective well-being of individuals. Following these assumptions, and on the basis of recent developments in the academic literature, this edited book debates extensively on these topics, offering an updated theoretical ground and pragmatic examples delineating an operational and coordinated evaluation of well-being that integrates the economic dimension with the environmental and social ones, thus assuring a more complete interpretation of complex (local) development paths.
