This open access book critically analyses a wide range of consumer law issues generated or exacerbated by the Internet of Things. The Internet of Things challenges many of the dichotomies which have shaped current laws: goods-services, hardware-software, tangible-intangible, online-offline. The book focuses on 4 specific challenges: things-as-service, liability, bricking of physical devices through software control, and the potential for enhanced personalisation, especially for digital assistants. The chapters analyse specific applications such as smart homes, connected cars, and consumer wearables with a view to providing innovative solutions to the new challenges posed by the Internet of Things, and to steer the development of the Internet of Things in a fairer direction. As well as offering an important analysis of the potential for smart consumer laws in the Internet of Things, the book also provides important insights into the growing divergence between Germany's and the UK's consumer laws since Brexit. From Smart Technologies to Smart Consumer Law

Governments around the world are privatizing everything, with dramatic but largely ignored negative consequences for human rights. This open access book outlines the response that is urgently needed. Corporations are being given control over water, healthcare, housing, public transportation, child welfare services, aged care, and much else. Privatization is promoted by international financial institutions, consulting firms, and development actors as the answer to public finances devastated by the very tax cuts insistently pushed by these groups. Their pitch is based upon a mythology that extols the virtues of an idealized market while ignoring the heavy human rights costs incurred. Building on the latest evidence and on specially commissioned case studies, this book shows how the touted 'efficiency' of the private sector is often predicated on higher charges and/or reduced services, destructive employment practices, and the highly predictable exclusion of many users. Privatization generally costs states more money, marginalizes democratic decision-making, and transforms citizens from rights-holders into customers while sidelining accountability. The authors develop an approach designed to enable human rights actors, including courts, UN treaty monitoring bodies, and NGOs to move beyond their longstanding agnosticism towards privatization. It starts with a presumption that privatization is inherently retrogressive in human rights terms. Whatever mix of public and private is reflected in any given arrangement, governments must retain the degree of control necessary to ensure respect for rights, and the legal, financial and administrative ability to do so. The book charts a new direction for responding to the ever-growing threat that privatization poses to human rights. In this volume covering the long sweep of US industrial policy, Marco R. Di Tommaso and Vinod K. Aggarwal contextualize the current moment of industrial policy and its possible consequences. In an era marked by international tension and global challenges, governments have responded by increasing their focus on industrial policy to enhance certain economic sectors. The United States is often seen to be a free-market economy lacking significant government intervention. However, the use of industrial policy in the United States is far from new. The American government has long played an essential role in industrialization from Hamilton's plan for manufacturing to Biden's turn to industrial policy in green industries and semiconductors and to Trump's tariff policies. In Governing Growth, Marco R. Di Tommaso and Vinod K. Aggarwal chart this history of American industrial policy spanning from the Founding Fathers to Donald Trump's current presidency. They explore the "pre-history" of American industrial policy, tracking how the government balanced industry and societal needs up until the crisis of the 1970s. Pointing to the parallels between Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, Di Tommaso and Aggarwal identify the pivot to neoliberalism in the 1980s. Even in this climate, they point out that there remained a significant gap between rhetoric promoting free trade and protectionist policies.
