I'll let you be in my dreams if I can be in yours

This large scale of portraits belongs to a monumental domain. Collecting close-up portraits taken during the Cultural Revolution, Xu Weixin enlarges them into immense figurative paintings. Apparently, the source of these photographs has its origins in an extraordinary and turbulent period of history. Xu transforms the monumentality in photographs and creates a new one in paintings. The portraits thus have dual monumentality implications: it is both individual autobiography and collective memory; private as well as national macro political domain; general preservation and also critical reflection. We must ask "how do the dual monumentality implications come to appear in Xu's works?"

Land of the Buffalo is a captivating book about Yellowstone's iconic buffalo that features over 200 stunning photographic images by the author. This immersive journey redefines our understanding of these magnificent creatures, revealing that what we've long called "herds" are, in fact, intricate and vital family units - networks of mothers, daughters, sisters, and their young, where familiarity truly equals survival in the face of Yellowstone's harsh realities. The book offers a poignant perspective on the daily struggles and historical context that define the Yellowstone buffalo's existence. From the relentless harassment by tourists and the constant threat of wolves to the brutal realities of winter and the devastating impact of "management" culls and treaty hunting, the author, a lifelong observer, unearths the hidden hardships endured by these animals. Through a blend of insightful narrative and breathtaking photography, with a special emphasis on their survival during the unforgiving winter months, this book challenges readers to consider the world through the buffalo's eyes. It's a powerful reminder of the near extinction of these majestic creatures and a call to remember why the American buffalo, a symbol of strength and resilience, was pushed to its most devastating test.

Land of the Buffalo

A revolutionary history of photography from a stellar team of writers and thinkers that challenges all existing narratives by focusing on the complex collaborations between photographer and subject. This groundbreaking and multifaceted history explores photography through the lens of collaboration, and in so doing challenges the dominant narratives around photographic history and authorship. Led by five of photography's great thinkers and practitioners, it breaks apart the 'single creator' tradition by bringing to light tangible traces of collaboration - the various relationships, exchanges and interactions which occur between all participants in the event of photography. Over 115 photography projects are surveyed in eight thematic chapters, and presented non-hierarchically alongside quotes, testimonies and concise texts by guest contributors. These networks of texts and images provide perspective on a vast array of photographic themes, from Araki's provocative portraits of women to archival files from the Spanish Civil War. With more than 550 photographs and over 100 text contributors, Collaboration is an inspiration for teaching and an open invitation to scholars, activists, photographers and others to practice always with and alongside others, and to participate actively in this engagement and enquiry.

Collaboration

The first publication dedicated to the house of Chanel and its creations as reported in Vogue, featuring iconic illustrations and photography from throughout the magazine's history and across its international editions. Vogue talent-spotted the work of a young Gabrielle Chanel as early as the 1910s and continued to report on the designer through the decades, from her seminal 'little black dress' to the most luxurious haute couture creations. From 1983, Karl Lagerfeld's re-imagining of the brand also found pride of place in the lauded magazine, inspiring some of the world's greatest stylists and photographers across the international editions of Vogue. Chanel in Vogue includes two volumes: the first volume is dedicated to the era of Gabrielle Chanel, and the second focuses on the work of her successors, Karl Lagerfeld and Virginie Viard, and up to the present day. This beautifully produced publication gathers together the inspirational editorials dreamt up by world-famous fashion illustrators and photographers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, from Edward Steichen, Horst P. Horst, George Hoyningen-Huene, Irving Penn and Helmut Newton, to Peter Lindbergh, Ellen von Unwerth, Annie Leibovitz, Steven Meisel and many more. Featuring iconic images as well as lesser-known photography and illustration, this book is a trove of stunning visual material, granting readers unparalleled access to more than a century's worth of fashion imagery. Published as two volumes in a slipcase, this high-end, large-format package is the definitive book on the fashion of Chanel as seen through the pages of the world's most influential fashion magazine.

The Film Photographer's Handbook

This issue brings together a global group of photographers contemplating nature's fragile beauty and its ever-changing relationship to people. Whether depicting haiku-like moments on a remote Japanese island, the ancient forests of California, or the entire Earth, the images gathered in this sweeping yet intimate issue remind us that nature is not separate from humanity, but entwined with our lives in ways that are both mysterious and profoundly urgent.

It is an open secret that the hardware in our smart devices contains plastics and raw materials mined from conflict regions. Can we move beyond this oppressive system of extraction to find ethical alternatives? Feminist hackers Patrícia Reis and Stefanie Wuschitz discuss developing technology through eco-feminist artistic tools, rooted in care economies, local knowledges and collective survival. Through an intensive knowledge-sharing process and collaboration with peers, they unpack eco-feminist theory and practices to propose resistance strategies grounded in ethical hardware and de-growth economies - contributing significantly to the new field of arts-based research.

As featured in People, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and The Guardian'For decades Philip Sharkey modestly ruled the London roost of passport and visa photography: the greatest, most trusted and admired practitioner in the field. Those lucky enough to have come before Philip's lens always left feeling that we had participated in a ritual that elevated us to a special kind of club. This wonderfully produced memoir vividly brings back to life a vanished time in the capital. Delicious.' - Stephen FryA never-before-seen archive of 300 celebrity portraits from London's iconic Passport Photo Service, where actors, writers, musicians, athletes, and other famous faces posed for their travel document photographs Since opening its doors in 1953, Passport Photo Service, an unassuming studio on Oxford Street in London, photographed thousands of people for passports, visas, and green cards - and some of them just happened to be famous. It was a family affair run by professional boxer turned photographer Dave Sharkey, his wife, Ann, and, eventually, their son Philip. Conveniently located near the US embassy and directly opposite the department store Selfridges, Passport Photo Service became the go-to place for passport photos thanks to word-of-mouth and its 'Ready in 10 Minutes' slogan, offering instant service before anyone else in the city was able to provide such a quick turnaround. This charming book is a collection of more than 300 never-before-published portraits taken over the course of six decades, including actors, writers, musicians, politicians, athletes, and more. Organized loosely alphabetically, Passport Photo Service includes such famous faces as Muhammad Ali, Shirley Bassey, Eric Clapton, John Cleese, Joan Collins, Sean Connery, Anton Corbijn, Tim Curry, Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Dockery, Stefan Edberg, Mia Farrow, Tom Ford, Stephen Fry, Ava Gardner, J. Paul Getty, Althea Gibson, Chrissie Hynde, Mick Jagger, Angelina Jolie, Chaka Khan, Little Richard, Madonna, Rami Malek, Stella McCartney, George Michael, Carey Mulligan, Bill Murray, Peter O'Toole, Alan Rickman, Paul Robeson, Ringo Starr, Tilda Swinton, Shania Twain, Valentino, Gene Wilder, Kate Winslet, and Natalie Wood, among many others.More than one hundred of the portraits are accompanied by anecdotes and amusing stories, written by Philip Sharkey. Among his memories: The first celebrity to use their services, Errol Flynn, pushed open the door and, hands on hips, boomed, 'Yep, it's me.' Muhammad Ali's picture was taken on his way to the DRC (formerly Zaire) to fight George Foreman in the famous Rumble in the Jungle match. Sharkey's uncle Peter suggested that perhaps Bianca Jagger remove her large hat for her photo, as the government might not accept the picture. She responded, 'They will for me.' She didn't come back for a retake. In his introduction, which tells a brief history of his family's business, Sharkey declares, 'One thing is for sure, whoever we photographed, famous or not - we treated them all with the same care and respect. In that moment, when the flash goes off, your passport photo becomes a great leveler.'Perfect for the photo historian, London nostalgic, or celebrity buff, Passport Photo Service's design is an homage to the art of the passport, as well as the studio's photo wallets that held developed prints, complete with a leatherette cover and a smart red stamp. Filled with a wonderfully eclectic assortment of subjects, this book is a breath of fresh air in the age of tightly controlled imagery. This volume charismatically yet emphatically celebrates the importance of vernacular photography and the story of a family-run business, revealing how images even made for travel documents can still be powerful portraits.

The first monograph on the Burkinabé photographer Sanlé Sory, whose unforgettable images capture a country at the dawn of its independence In 1957, a teenager from a small village arrived in the Burkinabé city of Bobo-Dioulasso. Struck by the importance of ID pictures in this urban setting - and impressed by the prices photographers taking them could command - he learned the trade of shooting and processing photographs. Three years later, the same year Burkina Faso gained full independence from France, seventeen-year-old Sanlé Sory opened his own photo studio, Volta Photo. Over the following three decades, Sory became one of the most renowned photographers in West Africa, respected for documenting slices of life in a rapidly changing social and political landscape. Along with the distinctive ID photos and laid-back outtakes he captured in his own studio, Sory was a dedicated chronicler of his city's nightlife, creating a visual record of youth culture in Burkina Faso's early post-colonial days. This stunning book, the first monograph on Sory's work, features more than two hundred of his arresting black-and-white photographs, including both studio portraits and nightlife photography. The book's imagery is complemented by insightful texts, including an essay from Sory reflecting on his life and career. Created in close collaboration with the artist, Sanlé Sory is not only an essential volume for fans and collectors, but an immersive visual journey that transports readers into the exciting, vibrant world of post-colonial West Africa.
