&lt;p&gt;Expertinnen und Experten aus Europa, Lateinamerika und den USA setzen sich kritisch mit  der Frage auseinander, wie sich die Staaten Lateinamerikas in der sich verändernden internationalen Ordnung außenpolitisch positionieren. Diese Frage stellt sich mit aktueller Dringlichkeit im Kontext des russischen Kriegs gegen die Ukraine, aber auch vor dem Hintergrund des sich verschärfenden globalen Systemwettbewerbs der Großmächte USA und China. Während Peking sein Engagement in Lateinamerika stark ausgebaut hat, ist der Einfluss der USA und Europas in der Region rückläufig. This book develops the discourse on the experiences of ex-combatants and their transition from war to peace, from the perspective of scholars across disciplines. Ex-combatants are often overlooked and ignored in the post-conflict search for memory and understanding, resulting in their voice being excluded or distorted. This collection seeks to disclose something of the lived experience of ex-combatants who have made the transition from war to peace to help to understand some of the difficulties they have encountered in social and emotional reintegration in the wake of combat. These include: motivations and mobilizations to participation in military struggle; the material difficulties experienced in social reintegration after the war; the emotional legacies of conflict; the discourses they utilize to reconcile their past in a society moving forward from conflict toward peace; and ex-combatants’ subsequent engagement – or not – in peacebuilding. It also examines the contributions that former combatants have made to post-conflict compromise, reconciliation and peacebuilding. It focusses on male non-state actors, women, child soldiers and, unusually, state veterans, and complements previous volumes which captured the voices of victims in Northern Ireland, South Africa and Sri Lanka. This volume speaks to those working in the areas of sociology, criminology, security studies, politics, and international relations, and professionals working in social justice and human rights NGOs.

From events at Nuremberg and Tokyo after World War II, to the recent trials of Slobodan Milošević and Saddam Hussein, war crimes trials are an increasingly pervasive feature of the aftermath of conflict. In his new book, Law, War and Crime, Gerry Simpson explores the meaning and effect of such trials, and places them in their broader political and cultural contexts. The book traces the development of the war crimes field from its origins in the outlawing of piracy to its contemporary manifestation in the establishment of the International Criminal Court in The Hague.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;p&gt;Simpson argues that the field of war crimes is constituted by a number of tensions between, for example, politics and law, local justice and cosmopolitan reckoning, collective guilt and individual responsibility, and between the instinct that war, at worst, is an error and the conviction that war is a crime.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Written in the wake of an extraordinary period in the life of the law, the book asks a number of critical questions. What does it mean to talk about war in the language of the criminal law? What are the consequences of seeking to criminalise the conduct of one's enemies? How did this relatively new phenomenon of putting on trial perpetrators of mass atrocity and defeated enemies come into existence? This book seeks to answer these important questions whilst shedding new light on the complex relationship between law, war and crime.&lt;/p&gt;

        &lt;p&gt;Art. 2 (4) der Satzung der Vereinten Nationen verbietet es Mitgliedstaaten, Gewalt „in ihren internationalen Beziehungen“ anzuwenden. Während die Ansicht weit verbreitet ist, dass hiermit lediglich die „Zwischenstaatlichkeit“ der Gewalt gemeint ist, zeigt eine ausführliche textuelle Auslegung der Norm, dass durch das Merkmal tatsächlich alle staatlichen Gewaltanwendungen, die nicht genuin „intern“ sind, vom Anwendungsbereich umfasst sein könnten. Während die Praxis in dieser Hinsicht nicht ebenso eindeutig ist, zeichnet eine eingehende Analyse verschiedener Gewaltanwendungsszenarien ein überraschend nuanciertes Bild, das das volle Potenzial dieses oft übersehenen Merkmals aufzeigt.&lt;/p&gt;

Something dramatic happened in the late summer and autumn of 2008. The post-Cold War world came to an abrupt end. This was the result of two conjoined crises. First, in its brief war with Georgia in August 2008, Russia asserted its military power to halt the expansion of NATO to its very borders. Secondly, on 15 September 2008 the Wall Street investment bank Lehman Brothers collapsed. This precipitated a severe financial crash and helped to push the world economy into the worst slump since the 1930s.  &lt;p&gt; Both crises marked a severe setback for the global power of the United States, which had driven NATO expansion and forced through the liberalization of financial markets. More broadly they challenged the consensus that had reigned since the collapse of the Soviet bloc in 1989 that a US-orchestrated liberal capitalist order could offer the world peace and prosperity. Already badly damaged by the Iraq debacle, this consensus has now suffered potentially fatal blows.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt; In &lt;i&gt;Bonfire of Illusions&lt;/i&gt; Alex Callinicos explores these twin crises. He traces the credit crunch that developed in 2007-8 to a much more protracted crisis of overaccumulation and profitability that has gripped global capitalism since the late 1960s. He also confronts the interaction between economic and geopolitical events, highlighting the new assertiveness of nation-states and analysing the tense, complex relationship of interdependence and conflict that binds together the US and China.
