Indem Aristoteles die Tragödie in ihrer Wirkung als Katharsis (?Reinigung') der tragischen Emotionen (?Furcht und Mitleid') fasst, sorgt er für eine bis heute anhaltende Diskussion. Die Studie wendet sich den Transformationen der Katharsis zu und fragt nach dem Traditionsbruch, den Jacob Bernays hervorruft, wenn er in einer philologischen Abhandlung (1857) das traditionelle moralische Verständnis der Katharsis verwirft und dagegen die ?Sollicitation', d. h. die gezielte Erregung und ?Entladung' der Emotionen, in die Diskussion einführt. Damit wird der Vorgang der Katharsis medizinisch gedeutet und pathologisiert. Breuer und Freud folgen diesem Impuls, wenn sie ihre Hysterietherapie als ?kathartische Methode' bezeichnen; auch Nietzsche rekurriert auf Bernays und stellt die kathartische ?Entladung' in den Dienst des gesteigerten Lebens. Die Studie konzentriert sich auf die Neubestimmung und Entgrenzung des Begriffs, der nicht mehr nur in den klassischen Feldern der Poetik und Ethik, Religion und Politik diskutiert wird, sondern auch in der Medizin und Psychologie sowie in der Ästhetik und Kulturtheorie. Mit Bernays wird die Katharsis zu einem Schlüsselbegriff für die Konzeption immer neuer ?Languages of Emotion?.
