Dispelling a common misconception that the law of ex-USSR countries is largely the same, the book provides an authoritative account of private international law in Uzbekistan, as well as the role the country plays in the harmonisation of private international law in the region and beyond. The chapters provide authoritative guidance on conflict-of-law rules, issues of jurisdiction in contractual and non-contractual matters, as well as the practice and procedure of enforcement of foreign judgements and arbitral awards in Uzbekistan. The book is the first that systematically explores private international law in Uzbekistan and is an essential tool in understanding the peculiarities of the country and their impact on legal practice.

It explores how the Court has developed a flexible, context-dependent approach to international law, which seeks to balance the autonomy of the EU legal order with the necessity of recognising and integrating international legal principles. Rather than focusing on landmark cases, the book analyses the CJEU's jurisprudence thematically, exploring the various ways the Court encounters and engages with international law. Outer space has long been considered the last untouched wilderness. However, non-State actors are increasingly active in space, heightening the risk of space pollution. Space law, designed during the Cold War, is State-centric and makes inadequate provision for non-State actors. In the face of this emerging threat, this book examines potential avenues of redress in space law, including the Outer Space Treaty, along with international environmental law, international criminal law, international humanitarian law, and international human rights law. It also reviews the national legislation adopted by space-faring States at the domestic level. This monograph provides an in-depth analysis of Article 7 of the Rome II Regulation, and its interplay with other EU PIL provisions, from a litigation perspective. This open access book offers a unique perspective on the return of cultural objects by considering the aftermath of the handover processes. While calls for the repatriation of heritage have been made since the start of the decolonisation process, it is only in recent years that the debate on returning cultural objects has gained widespread prominence. This has been followed by ongoing efforts from several countries to change the legislation, adopt principles, and invest in provenance research to turn repatriation into a more proactive mechanism. The book tells the story of cultural objects that were housed in European institutions and returned to countries in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. In addition to in-depth analysis of relevant laws and policies, each of the case studies integrates interviews with those who were directly involved in those return processes, as well as those who were impacted by them, including museum staff, government representatives and community members. The book presents previously unheard insights into past return processes, the manifold modalities that such processes have followed, and, at times, unexpected outcomes.
