The Shattering of Elon Musk

Born from a desire for creative freedom, web series often circumvent screen industry gatekeepers and attract smaller, niche audiences; but fewer views do not necessarily make the format, or its audience engagement, less valuable. This book looks behind the scenes to uncover how and why audiences engaged with nine Australian web series released between 2020 and 2023. Interviews with web series producers reveal their motivations, audience acquisition and maintenance strategies, funding methods, and platform specific approaches. These first-hand accounts are then compared with viewership metrics and the content of audience commentary, resulting in the illumination of social, cultural, and industrial values of audience engagement with these innovative productions. This book identifies key factors that influence audience behaviours such as perceived authenticity, platform choice, and the types, forms, and costs of engaging with web series. These factors are considered with respect to online community building, relationships between creators and audiences, and commercial uses of the format, resulting in the creation of a typology of web series audiences. Readers benefit from understanding the value and characteristics of each type of viewer across a diverse range of examples featuring differing audience demographics, zero to over $1 million budgets, and platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok. Vibrant narratives are used to convey each series' backstory, providing an informative and engaging reading experience for screen industry practitioners, marketing and broadcast professionals, and aspiring filmmakers. Academics and students in the fields of media studies, audience engagement, screen production, creative labour and entrepreneurship, social media, and algorithmic culture will also benefit from this research.

The Promise and Peril of Navigating Our Agentic AI Future

When Machines Act

What goals are still feasible for the politics of emancipation on a ruined planet? This is where we are. Today's techno-oligarchs are not concerned with saving the planet; rather, they have accepted the end of progress and are focused on safeguarding their wealth in the face of an impending political and ecological collapse. Artificial intelligence and algorithms make decisions for us. Climate breakdown has long steamed past the wreckage of the Paris Agreement.Perhaps the accelerationists have the right idea. Accelerationism - which aims to resolve the current crisis through the intensification of technological development - is the only philosophy not clinging to the now-extinct idea of progress. The idea has gained ground on both the left and right: but the right-wing is shot through with misanthropy, while the left remains entangled in a faith in technological progress and the domination of nature.Transcending capitalism at the end of progress requires a synthesis of the two. The result of this synthesis: Dark Socialism. From 'rock star philosopher' Kohei Saito comes an anticapitalist clarion call for our breakneck times, channeling despair into a socialist project equal to the end of progress.

Hope in a Ruined World

Dark Socialism

A lesson-packed success story for the twenty-first century, from a ninth-generation Kentuckian who imported the Silicon Valley playbook to the heartland, revealing how the entrepreneurial mindset can be applied anywhere, and even to our most stubborn industries. In his case: trash. When Nate Morris decided to build a business, he wasn’t looking to disrupt—he was looking for a problem to solve. Morris believed that the bigger the problem, the more the market would reward him for solving it. And one of the biggest problems, he came to believe, was one that every person, business, and community dealt with on a daily basis, but which was often overlooked: waste. American Trash is the moving story of how a ninth-generation Kentuckian—a boy who grew up being called “white trash”—applied the innovative thinking we associate with Silicon Valley startups to the ancient problem of waste. Raised on the scrappy resourcefulness of his grandfather, president of their local autoworkers’ union, Morris built Rubicon, a waste management company powered by digital technology. Unlike the bloated industry titans of yesterday, Rubicon was asset light: It wouldn’t own landfills, so it would be free of the perverse incentive to fill the land with chemical-laden trash, and it wouldn’t own trucks, so it would support “mom and pop” hauler businesses. Most important, it would be based in Georgia and Kentucky, thousands of miles from the near-sighted culture of Silicon Valley. In telling his story, Morris shows how he combined the great tradition of American entrepreneurship with the lessons of the digital economy—and did it far from the coastal bastions of the technology elite. The result is a blueprint for those seeking to tackle our biggest challenges with creative, free-market solutions.

Equips legal professionals and stakeholders with a clear, authoritative, and practical guide to the UK legal treatment of digital payments and tokenised assets. The Law of Digital Payments explores the evolving landscape of UK financial law as it adapts to innovations in digital finance. With fintech disrupting traditional models of value exchange, legal professionals must navigate complex regulatory challenges concerning digital wallets, open banking APIs, smart contracts, decentralised finance (DeFi), and the treatment of tokenised assets under common law. This work delves into how UK courts and regulators are addressing these innovations. It provides clarity on the current legal treatment of payment tokens, security tokens, cryptoassets and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). It also investigates the impact of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2023, the Bank of England's stance on central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), and how the Payment Services Regulations and E-Money Regulations are applied to innovative business models. Drawing upon regulatory guidance, case law, and international developments, the book is designed to help practitioners, regulators, academics, and financial institutions understand and navigate the complex intersection of law and digital finance. This title is included in Bloomsbury Professional's Banking and Finance Law online service.

Writing Human in the Age of AI

A manifesto in lectures about the material conditions and absurdities of being a writer and adjunct professor under capitalism-by turns funny, angry, despairing, and hopeful-from a writer who "has invented a new form" (Annie Ernaux).

In the spring of 2025, Heroines and Drifts author Kate Zambreno taught a weeklong nonfiction "craft" lecture at Columbia University, thinking through the crises of the adjunct loop in the United States and the question of labor and writing in publishing and the university. This project became more absurd, and more urgent, as the Trump administration quickly turned to authoritarianism and the university became complicit with the administration, creating a dystopian and paranoid atmosphere in which students were kidnapped from university housing and student protestors were expelled. How can we study together and create under such conditions?

The resulting essays are funny, angry, often in despair, and somehow also full of optimism as to the future of writing, even amidst the collapse of the institutions meant to support writers and students. Zambreno engages with texts including Sofia Samatar's Opacities, Fred Moten and Stefano Harney's The Undercommons, Noémi Lefebvre's The Poetics of Work, Heike Geissler's Seasonal Associate, and Samuel Delaney's Times Square Red, Times Square Blue.

A craft book against a "craft" divorced from political and material realities, Against Nonfiction is for anyone trying to write and make art in impossible times.

The Strategy, Governance, and Economics of Agentic AI

Building an Agentic Organization

This is the updated and expanded edition of the only radical, multidisciplinary, international introduction to intellectual property in its socio-economic contexts. Bringing together voices from law, sociology, economics, political science, and cultural studies from across the Global North and Global South, experts and activists Mat Callahan and Jim Rogers offer a detailed history and analysis of IP before asking critical questions designed to underscore its importance in the broader struggle between capital and the commons. What are the broader implications of IP, whether for agribusiness, pharmaceuticals, education, or entertainment? Is IP law a fundamental pillar of our culture, or has it been used to protect and assert the ownership of, and thus limit, the spread of ideas and creativity? With a chapter structure moving from historical and theoretical foundations to industry-specific conflicts and policy analysis, this book covers the breadth and depth of IP areas, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets, as well as emerging issues such as digital rights and biotechnology. Key features include: - voluminous, up-to-date case studies, both Western and non-Western; - an extensive, jargon-busting list of abbreviations of specialized or technical terms; - a new chapter on copyright and socialism; - revisions and updates accounting for the seismic impacts of artificial intelligence. This is a foundational must-read for all researchers, students, and activists interested in critical analyses of IP laws and policies--not just their legal frameworks, but also their broader social, economic, and political implications.

A Radical Guide to the Past, Present, and Future of the Ownership of Ideas

Rethinking Intellectual Property

Why the consequences of a prolonged period of weaker economic growth will be more profound than anyone dares to predictIn the heady progress of the post-war era, our lifestyles changed, our political systems adapted, and rapid economic growth became the model of every developed economy. But this prevailing consensus is falling apart around us. Growth is now, at best, no more than anaemic. Policymakers dream about an AI revolution and tweak their fiscal rules to accommodate a newly-austere economic reality but, all the while, government debt soars, financial markets become increasingly jittery, and voters lose trust in their politicians.Celebrated economist Stephen D. King asks how our politics will adapt to such persistently low growth. While leaders make fiscal promises based on a future that is unlikely to materialise, nationalism thrives, battlelines are drawn between perceived winners and losers, and the rules-based international order crumbles. The absence of growth triggers invidious political wrangling over tax, welfare, defence and infrastructure, intensifies competition for resources, and leads to social instability.King shows how our new world is governed by them-and-us divisions over limited economic spoils. This is the political economy of plunder.
