It was a natural progression that helped him form a distinct vision of the future, which guided him to what would be the next best way to develop projects and produce electricity. The United States is heading in the same direction, for a simple reason: not because we have all become environmental activists, but because renewable-energy technology just makes sense. It has the potential to create unlimited amounts of energy, and a low-cost, highly efficient, and reliable power system.Polsky's company, Invenergy, is now the biggest privately owned clean-energy business in the US. He was forward-thinking enough to have built a business with a focus on renewable energy. But the challenge Polsky sees for America is that we don't have enough installed renewable-power generation, hooked up to the grid and ready to supply. Because demand for electricity is so unprecedented, the source of the energy is becoming somewhat secondary to the need itself. We're burning more fossil fuels than ever before, reopening mothballed nuclear power stations, and betting on experimental technology.We are entering an era of an "all of the above" approach to generating electricity, driven by the surge in demand and the realization that neither fossil fuels nor renewables alone can meet all our needs. As Polsky sees it, the danger is that our immediate appetites could blind us to the consequences of using all forms of energy: making climate change worse, slowing the energy transition, and the potentially disastrous results of a nuclear accident.Polsky is far from a green warrior or an ecological activist. As a student in his native Kyiv, Ukraine, he was trained in the 1970s to design power plants that burned heavy oil or coal. When he emigrated to the United States in 1976, he worked on nuclear power plants, then on gas-powered plants, and then on power plants that burned coal, oil, and natural gas. The first company he started worked on coal- and natural-gas-fired power plants; his second company developed facilities that burned natural gas, tires, and wood.Today, Polsky and Invenergy are in the renewable-energy business because it is an unprecedented industrial and financial opportunity, offering the chance to create unlimited amounts of energy efficiently, reliably, and at a low cost. It is highly scalable. It is the future toward which technology is taking us. Our choice is not whether or not to switch to renewable energy, but if we will grasp this opportunity or have it forced upon us by crises. The first history of US federal law enforcement from the nation's founding to the creation of the Justice Department in 1870, showing how federal prosecutions have always been shaped by local institutions and interests. The public imagines the Department of Justice and its agencies as mighty juggernauts. The reality is strikingly different. The FBI is barely larger than the Chicago Police Department, federal courts handle far fewer cases than state courts do, and federal prosecutors rely heavily on state and municipal authorities. The feds cannot function without local support, which means that the projects on which DOJ intervention is most needed-the ones that local communities oppose or don't care about-are also those least likely to succeed. This is no accident. Fragile Authority shows that this weakness is built into the structure of federal enforcement. To understand why, Daniel Richman traces the present-day workings of the DOJ all the way back to the nation's founding. The system was so circumscribed at the start that districts went years without a single conviction; enforcement efforts were often just performances of sovereignty for foreign audiences. And while a stronger enforcement apparatus emerged from the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act, its protection of Black civil rights during Reconstruction lasted only a few years before the federal retreat. After its creation in 1870, the Justice Department concealed its limitations by turning the agendas of local police-such as prosecuting gangsters, car thefts, and prostitution-into ostensibly national priorities. For better and for worse, federal law enforcement missions without local buy-in remain rare and difficult to sustain. The resistance to President Trump's immigration enforcement surge in sanctuary jurisdictions showed yet again that this norm is not easily broken.

Facing the Child investigates the technocratic expertise in the policing of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Mitali Thakor argues that CSAM has come to be framed as primarily a digital problem, to be resolved digitally, thereby unleashing a new form of corporatized policing helmed by global technology companies. Ambitious in scope, this multi-sited global ethnography draws on four years of original fieldwork and interviews with technology companies in the US, the United Nations in Bangkok, Thai and Dutch NGOs, and law enforcement in the US and the Netherlands. The book argues that in the 2010s, a network of technology companies, NGOs, and law enforcement created the notion of a “virtual child” in need of techno-solutionist saving to justify a vast expansion of surveillance technologies. The book examines how pervasive myths of child abuse online were exploited to serve the aims of seemingly disparate groups, from Christian neo-abolitionists to NGOs conducting virtual sting operations. It is this complex relationship between the care and securitization needed to fix the child victim as an object of data, concern, and rescue that the book explores.
