Holiday Rentals That Hustle
What if the property that was about to break you ended up being the thing that set you free?
That's roughly how our story starts. One two-bedroom apartment in South Africa, a rental assessment that didn't add up, and a decision to list on Airbnb that we made more out of desperation than strategy. A few mistakes, a lot of learning, and one Superhost badge later; we were travelling the world, staying in short-term rentals across 34-plus countries, and wondering why nobody had written the book we'd needed back at the beginning.
So we wrote it.
Holiday Rentals that Hustle is the short-term rental guide we wish had existed when we started; honest about the hard parts, practical about the solutions, and written by people who've experienced this industry from every angle: as hosts, as guests in more than 100 towns and cities across four continents, and from inside a professional STR property management operation working with purpose-built property management software.
This isn't a book full of "passive income" promises and suspiciously round numbers. It's a genuinely comprehensive, occasionally self-deprecating, always practical guide to building an STR business that actually works. Whether you're starting from scratch, trying to get more from a property you already have, or running a growing portfolio and wondering why it feels harder than it should.
Inside, you'll find:
A plain-English breakdown of the industry: OTAs, PMS, ADR, RevPAR, and all the alphabet soup decoded without the jargon headache.
An honest look at the legal landscape: the UK's 90-day rule, planning permissions, registration schemes, insurance, and safety certification; with a global perspective on how rules differ from city to city and country to country.
A practical guide to choosing your tech stack: including how Hostaway, Guesty, Lodgify, Beds24, OwnerRez, and Hospiria actually compare, and how to match a platform to your stage rather than the marketing hype.
Listing optimisation, dynamic pricing, and OTA channel strategy: grounded in real data, including the three-layer framework (Completeness, Clarity, Conversion) that helps any listing work harder.
The full guest journey, mapped: from booking confirmation to five-star review, including practical scripts for complaints, emergencies, and the moments that matter most.
Brand-building, local experiences, influencer marketing, and the "little touches" that turn a good stay into a memorable one - and a one-time guest into a returning advocate.
A clear-eyed guide to scaling, automation, and knowing when (and how) to bring in support; including the honest conversation about burnout that most books in this space quietly avoid.
Routes into the industry for those who don't yet own a property; from co-hosting and rental arbitrage to becoming a professional property manager.
And a forward-looking chapter on where STR is heading; regulation, sustainability, AI, and what the industry looks like in 2026 and beyond.
This book is written for independent hosts who want to do this properly, small-to-medium property management companies looking to sharpen their approach, and homeowners considering whether STR might be right for them, as well as anyone in the travel and hospitality ecosystem curious about what genuinely makes a short-term rental business work.
It's not written from a theoretical perch. It's written from the seat of two people who started with one nervous listing and ended up with a blog, a consultancy, a lot of stamps in their passports, and a genuine conviction that this industry - done well, done honestly, done with care for guests and the communities properties sit in - is one of the most interesting businesses there is.
Two bags. One bicycle. Everything we've learned along the way.
Welcome aboard.
