This edition makes available an entirely new version of Hegel's lectures on the development and scope of world history. Volume II presents Hegel's surviving manuscripts of his introduction to the lectures and the full transcription of the second series of lectures (1830-31).

The Lectures of 1830–1831

Hegel gave various lecture series on aesthetics or the philosophy of art, but never published a book of his own on this topic. His famous works on aesthetics were compiled from transcripts of lectures. This volume now presents one transcript complete in English for the first time, with extensive introductory material.

Hegel gave lecture series on aesthetics or the philosophy of art in various university terms, but never published a book of his own on this topic. His student, H. G. Hotho, compiled auditors' transcripts from these separate lecture series and produced from them the three volumes on aesthetics in the standard edition of Hegel's collected works. Annemarie Gethmann-Siefert has now published one of these transcripts, the Hotho transcript of the 1823 lecture series, and accompanied it with a very extensive introductory essay treating many issues pertinent to a proper understanding of Hegel's views on art. She persuasively argues that the evidence shows Hegel never finalized his views on the philosophy of art, but modified them in significant ways from one lecture series to the next. In addition, she makes the case that Hotho's compilation not only concealed this circumstance, by the harmony he created out of diverse source materials, but also imposed some of his own views on aesthetics, views that differ from Hegel's and that the ongoing interpretation of the aesthetics part of Hegel's philosophy has unfortunately taken to be Hegel's own.
This translation of the German volume, which contains the first publication of the Hotho transcript and Gethmann-Siefert's essay, makes these important materials accessible to the English reader, materials that should put the English-speaking world's future understanding and interpretation of Hegel's philosophy of art on a sounder footing.

The purpose of this study is to illustrate the rich history of active cultural contact between Islam and Christianity in Europe and the Middle East, despite periods of conflict since the Arab Conquest of Byzantium. How are the norms of subcultures adopted by radicalised individuals and reflected in their lifestyle, identity and choices? Violent radicalisation is often portrayed as a deviant behaviour resulting from social and political dissociation. At the same time Islamist, right-wing and left-wing terrorist groups have all found sections of the population to sympathise with their aims and provide them with moral and logistical support. Through comprehensive systematic research, rigorous analysis of the empirical data and a range of interviews with active and former radicals Daniela Pisoiu construct a theoretical framework to explain the transition to radicalisation and political violence in Germany. Her conclusions provide us with a wider understanding of the role of subcultures in violent radicalisation and demonstrates that, far from a marginal and abnormal phenomenon, this radicalisation is a matter of traceable long term and holistic socialisation.

In this ground-breaking study, Darren Schmidt considers the emergence and development of evangelical Protestantism in the North Atlantic context during the long eighteenth century, through the lens of history-writing by evangelicals themselves. Considering the writings of prominent early evangelicals such as Jonathan Edwards, John Newton and John Wesley, along with lesser known historians with evangelical connections, the volume asks why these individuals, amidst busy lives of pastoral ministry, study, and guidance to a fledgling religious movement, would devote their attention to the pages of the past. In so doing, Schmidt draws out new and intriguing connections between evangelicalism and the wider enlightenment world.
